Our little guy was rescued after being a classroom pet prisoner for 14 years. he had a food tube for a while because he was so depressed and not eating. However, the first day we took him home from the rescue he actually began eating again. He's so happy now. He has a little shell deformation from not being taken care of properly for 14 years and his beak does grow fast, but he's happy and healthy. :D Very fulfilling helping the little guy. Poor little Tommy. Makes me so cross at how people take on animals then do not provide the care they rely on us for. Thanks for making this video to raise awareness about this issue. Sheldon is such a little cutie, bless her. Our guy is quite territorial so if you tried to hold him like you held her, he'd likely be trying to nibble your jugular. xD

Our two year old Horsefield has been in a reptile hospital for two nights now being treated for MBD (underside shell), she dropped 8g since Christmas and the found she has worms but the kidney blood test came back ok and she has been eating for them, she comes home tomorrow....your video has helped so much in preparation for her to come home, we are resizing the tort table and and adding extra UV lighting...fingers crossed for us!

It breaks my heart that Tommy and so many other tortoises out there aren't getting the necessary care they require. What an excellent and informational video, I do hope that it helps educate other tortoise owners!

BudgetBunny Thank you, I so hope that it helps some tortoises out there! It is crazy that so many tortoises are getting such poor care, I don't understand why people get animals for the sake of it and have no desire to look into providing the appropriate care. Tommy's owners didn't even try :O Tortoises are such different animals and need specific care... I don't get it! I expect that you see the same with birds? I would have no idea how to care for a little Parrotlet! xxx

I've rescued a horsfield male 4,5 years old. 1st year he grew up with a breeder decently. In 2016 he was bought and lived in a 30 by 40 cm enclosure with only a heat lamp, no uv, so horrible. In 2018 he was bought by the people I got him from 2 days ago. He lived in a closed terrarium 40 by 60,he did have correct lighting (warmth and uv) got decent food, vitamins, cuttlebone and he went out in the summer. But the terrarium was so small and extremely damp. Now he lives in an open top 70 by 150 cm, 6 inches of substrate he can dig in, hidings etc etc. I have to say he doesn't look that bad for what he endured. Minor piramiding, he is 9 cm and 349 grams. He is active and sweet. He will get an oudoor enclosure of 180 by 4 meters with breedinghouse etc.

+Jonathan sargent it won't let me reply to your comment. It seems to depend on the bulb as I've seen people recommend changing the bulb every 6 months and some people say 12. I change it every 6 months or so to be on the safe side and ensure continued UV output :)

Hello x I'd just like to add a little question as my tortoise has a very funny humour...(he's very picky!!) How do you make the tortoise think the cuttlefish is food? ... He thinks it's a little decoration!!!
@BeckysAnimals9 жыл бұрын
Mollie-Mae Shilston Awww bless him :) That's a tricky one, Sheldon instinctively started munching away on hers. I suppose you could always try rubbing some of his favorite food on it (maybe dandelion or something?) so he learns that it is edible? You could also try crushing it up into a powder and sprinkling some over his food occasionally so he gets those trace minerals into his diet?

Thank you :-)

RIP to the little tort who didnt make it, I struggle to keep calm when i see torts who are in such a bad condition which can be 100% avoided with the right research. if you decide to take on any pet, DO YOUR RESEARCH, you owe it to them, and yourself. You will cause an animal to die, slowly and painfully if you dont!
@BeckysAnimals8 жыл бұрын
This was a tortoise that I rescued in this condition and did everything in my power to try to save. Including very expensive vet treatments which I didn't need to pay for but chose to take on out of my love for tortoises and because I felt I owed it to him to give him a decent home for the first time in his short life. Please do your research before leaving a mean comment. This video explains how he came to live with me and how he came to pass away: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqa0hoeCea-Hhac This video was made to try to spread awareness about how it is prevented.

Aaaah that makes more sense now haha I thought that this video had been completely misunderstood so I jumped on the defencive lol in that case I couldn't agree more!! This situation with Tommy upset me so much, I couldn't believe he had been left to get like this! It is the ignorance of his previous owners that caused him so much suffering and ultimately his death

:((,my baby tortoise has this It's sjbling died sadly,might've been from that
@BeckysAnimals5 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that! Baby tortoises naturally have slightly soft shells after hatching which is different to MBD which is usually developed over a long time without the correct heating, lighting and diet. How old is your tort? What sort of set-up do you have? If his sibling has died, I would take him to the vets to see if he is okay and if there's anything you can do to help him.
