The current obsession with fibre's role in microbiome health, is mostly based on weak correlative work. The devotees are studiously avoiding looking at microbiome 'diversity' in animal based diets and the huge number of people with gut disease who've got better by removing fibre from their diet.

I like the way he emphasizes species adequate diet. Personalized diets are sometimes required . Species Adequate it is the key. So simple so true. Great guest, very wise, and very knowledgeable. Thanks to you for your channel.

Even after a few weeks I felt better but it took a year for even better results.

I agree! The vast majority of the time humans were probably in at least .5mmol of ketones at all times. The only exceptions were probably when nature wanted us to get fat (ripe fruit). Yes this changed with agriculture but that is a relatively recent phenomenon and the health during most of human agriculture has been awful. Best of luck with the study, I think the microbiome is one of the biggest potential factors in why this treatment is so effective. The mouse studies with microbiome changes and schizophrenia models have been incredibly promising. The current microbiome discussion is interesting, because as far as I understand the current recommendation for fiber and prebiotic fibers to feed the microbiome is so that the gut produces butyrate! When on a ketogenic diet you're producing vastly larger quantities of butryate and perhaps don't need that butryate production in the gut

Four foods gave me severe depression and other symptoms: eggs, milk, turkey and sunflower seeds. As long as I avoided them I was fine. One slip and it was three days of torture. I went to a Chinese doctor for a cure. She learned about my diet, gave me three courses of antibiotics, and got me complately cured. I can now eat those foods and not have any depression. Strangely, she did not diagnose me as having depression, since there were also asthma attacks and painful back spasms. She diagnosed my case as "Autoimmune Disorder--Unspecified."

In terms of microbiome tests, my question is: we test the poop, right? Does what's in poop match what's in the gut? Or, is the bacteria in poop actually being eliminated from the gut and different from what we would find left back in the gut?

Most research is in the most easily accessible micro biome. Shocking, I know. Which leaves out e.g. the small intestine. Interestingly enough, the mouth micro biome seems to be mostly ignored and is still being suggested to wipe it out with mouthwash. I'd say, analyse mouth micro biome of vegans and hyper carnivores and which of them is better for teeth health. I know there will be a clear winner. If a dietbis bad for the mouth, no further research on that diet is needed, it is a bad one for humans.

You can test both. But usually poop bacteria are tested because it's easier to obtain. Stool microbiome composition differs from actual gut lining microbiome composition. But it gives you a better-than-nothing approximation of what the actual gut microbiome looks like.

@@afanasymarinov2236: yes…my dentist tests my mouth…and you actually want most of the rest of activity to happen in the lower digestive tract, as SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is problematic. I no longer use mouthwash or commercial toothpaste. I consume near zero carbohydrates…my dentist is astonished by my healthy teeth, gums and zero plaque.

This was really interesting, thanks so much. Are there any ongoing studies into keto for depression where the study duration is much longer? I’ve been in ketosis for almost 8 weeks and seen remarkable, very quick, improvements with my blood sugar, but no significant (noticeable ) impact yet on my depression or physical health issues (multiple autoimmunity). So I’d be interested to see if any studies are following people for longer to see if some people do take longer to notice benefits,

There are several clinical trials of ketogenic therapy for depression currently underway with varying study durations, including longer than an 8-week duration. You can learn more on this page of our website: www.metabolicmind.org/research#trials

Hi Bret, Nice videos!! Changing the subject, a question: Can ketosis/ketogenic diet helps positively or 'cure' people with dissociative identity disorder (DID)??

Thanks for your comment and questions. Unfortunately, we aren't aware of any research in the field of DID.
