Hey, It's been almost a year and a half since Metagame first debuted, and the whole shitshow went down hasn't it huh :p. Since the dust has cleared since for the most part (I think it's funny people are still viewing these clips honestly haha), I thought it'd be cool to do an in-depth review sorta thing someday. It's interesting because this clip and the whole drama it caused in particular kept making me think: what would have happened if this documentary had released in Winter 2016 like it was originally supposed to? What would have the whole documentary have been like if this stayed focused on Armada and PPMD, ONLY, like it originally was? I think taking in the broader context behind the film's making and eventual release, as well as sharing my own personal likes and dislikes, could be an interesting project, considering I barely upload. Smash and gaming in general changed A LOT since 2015-16, and I think after learning much of the game's competitive history, and applying it here, it could be an interesting, albeit very laborious, project to tackle. Also, as I've said in some replies, I haven't actually seen the recut of Metagame on vimeo. Apparently in this specific clip here, the only thing cut within this part was the exclusion of Rocky's allegation starting at 1:23 ? I still think it wasn't a good decision to edit out an accusation like that in the final cut, it's a documentary of that period in smash afterall, but I do appreciate people letting me know though, and if I do this big review thing, I might have to buy the re-edit AND Godslayer for FULL comparison. Melee might have the most options for playing and the highest level of skill of all time currently, but the community for its continual and forceful injection of outside politics, playing to narratives, and the continual issues internally where leaders and figures don't want to jeopardize their place in the community whether it be financial or comfort to get rid of said problems speaks volumes of the state of melee. Melee as a community was fine with standard common sense which is/are, Don't be a phobe, don't be racist, don't be hateful and/or harm others. Rocky was a huge part in the initial allegations way back in 2013, I looked at the initial smashboards post by Armada and the Internet Archive for a short bit and while the whole thing is hard to find you can still see and find some swedish Smashboards forums that showcase Leffen’s harassment and treatment towards Rocky, amongst others, regarding point 3 - making fun of people’s disabilities. Leffen during this time was known for this kind of behavior, and having Rocky interviewed gives credibility towards those claims first brought from 2013. I think with the passage of time to today, Leffen has diled back on this behavior, albeit spare some recent examples (he’s a fellow Korean ya see). And the lack of a Leffen interview really is def. a drag from what’s otherwise a fascinating documentary. But to disregard claims from a person directly involved all those years ago, and to have it cut in the edit is very dubious. The amount of time between these events, when this was originally supposed to be released, and present day doesn’t help either.

Personally, I despise Leffen but it’s for good reasons like the fact that he tries to discredit good players by saying that they’re using easy characters or that they have the advantage in certain matchups where they actually don’t. These people are upset because they got trashed talked in a fighting game and it fucked with their mentality. These are adults competing at the pro level and trying to prevent competition from playing just because they can’t handle trash talk, something that is intertwined in literally every single esport and sports in general. And yeah I’d be pretty pissed too if people were trying to entertain the idea that I was an evil sociopath because I told them that they’re shit at a game and should give up.

The reason the mango and leffen shit was wrong to document the way it was in the eyes of so many people is that it felt like they didn't get their redemption arcs everyone knows they have. Mango becoming a father, Leffen becoming a genuinely nicer person throughout the years. Even when all the filming was done in 2015, all of his shit was way better than before. I think however, media is portrayed to tell certain stories, but this doesn't paint Leffen as a villain, it paints him as an asshole ableist which at 2015 he was not. A lot of people go their stories of ups and downs, unfortunately leffen and mango didn't get there's in terms of their personal character growth in the doc, only their downs. I have so many opinions but I'll stop here. Thank you for posting this though, I wish it was edited or stayed in the new cut IMO.
