I was having similar fear when i started studying 3d modeling 10 years ago about mo caps and 3d scans. I wouldn't worry to much about it. I don't see technology 100% replacing artists anytime soon.

But then also... things like Nvidia and any of the big cloud web service providers who offer cloud based workstations... I guess there's always more going on. I thought the mocap on display here is obviously great, and the proof is right there, it looks capable so maybe a company this big doesn't need to 'sell the idea on KZbin' --they have other channels... For some reason the male models with facial hair look considerably more believable when speaking than the female models. That make me wonder if the key to crossing uncanny valley is just obstruction of certain facial features. If you can't see the animation imperfections they don't bother you.

@@YourMJK You don't understand him right. Use this as source and then use a deepfake Software. The better the source material comes close to the one you want to deepfake, the better the endresult is. Look for example on that Netflix The Irishman deepfake here on KZbin, really good and the Source is still not so good it could be, because the actors looks because of their age too different. With this creator, realtime rigging and a deepfake that works in realtime (are we so far right now? If not I'm sure soon) you could create a live deepfake of any person from who you have some good images. And sure, if that technology get better and better we did not even need deepfake techniques anymore.

By using real footage you could _theoretically_ train the model to perfection, to the point where it produces results that are indistinguishable from real life.

That's like saying using Megascans assets will result in a generic looking game. You still have to have creativity, story, environment, presence, ect to make a game and all this does is free up countless hours to work on those things. But I guess we could go back to hand animating things with pen and paper if you want to be a hipster about this, otherwise why not use the tools available to create the worlds we want to build?

Everything will be automated and procedural at some point. I love sculpting characters but outside of stylized ones (which could be generated as well to some degree) there won't be a point soon, apart from giving oneself a challenge kind of like painting Mona Lisa in MS paint. Tools take time to adopt so there will still be some demand but branching out is probably a good idea. If it brings down the cost of making high quality games and movies and frees us up to do other things though, I think it's a good thing. Until AAA games start making themselves and the gamers are robots because humanity died out long ago I suppose, but we'll probably go through another stone age before that.

Something I'd love to see is some kind of parameters to create a whole population at once and then modify them to create multiple variants. Imagine the ability to change traits the attributes for an entire population or certain percentage. This would allow games where the population could change over time, imagine the possibilities for an apocalypse theme for example! I'm sure there's many more things people will come up with.

@@micahbellonline9462 Not necessarily. this is just a tool. Like any tool whoever uses it determines it's effectiveness. I can pick up an art program, or a paint brush but my artistic talent is near zero. I don't know the nuances of making realistic faces, lighting, shading, etc but an artist who's trained for years does. A properly trained artist with this program will be able to do an order of magnitude better humans than someone who picks it up for fun.

I was one that got a bit peeved that Id-tech didnt do a few of the things that Unreal did when it came out with Unreal tournament. The first iteration. The intro was as good as it got, a lil better that HalfLif's and a continuous flow of pre action. We got music and a building tempo that started the game even before you pressed enter. It then got better with all of the sounds and voices - "I need more backup" - is always prominent in my memory when I think back. I thought that along with Bleszinski they are starting the next evolution of the FPS genre. Its said that Bleszinski was a difficult programmer but got the job done. "Facing worlds" was so good that you could just stare at the environment and forget playing. These years later I am shocked that the unreal engine has matured so much. What!!! A engine that started out as a way to place gaming characters in a map to shoot at one another has evolved into a way to design realistic faces on characters that rival or better professional software packages. I remember when MAYA was a $10,000 package. UnrealEngine is for most purposes free. One of the hardest things to do is the things that we take for granted. Our ability to recognize faces is so difficult that I wont be surprised if they started R&D back when Unreal Tournament was turning 1. Good job Unreal. I still Doom (versions) and Unreal tournaments(versions). I have read the Idtech documentary. Epic first major hit - as I remember it - was a computerized pinball game. I had the demo. Cant wait for the Epic and Unreal docu-movie. Its overdue.

All this technological process leads us to the point at which the only limiting factor is our own imagination, the way we present our creation and of course time. In the future there won't be any technological obstacles preventing someone from creating beautiful and unique digital worlds, stories etc. It will be like writing a book today. Unlikely, unless UE has an sdk for this feature where other developers can implement this as a plugin to their engine. Otherwise UE are not too optimisé to the point where they can create large scale games as big as Battlefield etc
