This Is Serious Mum - TISM - Greg! The Stop Sign
• This Is Serious Mum - ...
"Greg! The Stop Sign" is TISM's parody of the infamous TAC public service advertisement in which in the original advert, moments before the car accident, the female passenger yells out "Darren!". No idea why it was changed to Greg, but then again Greg rears it's fugly head again when almost 15 years later Humphrey B. Flaubert (Damian Cowell) in his new band, ROOT! writes his ode to lead singer of The Beasts of Bourbon/Cruel Sea fame, called "I Wish I Was Tex Perkins". This song as the memorable lyrics of "A thousand girls call him in the night....nobody ever calls him Greg".
Did you ever wondered where that mid break instrumental piece came from?
Well it the band cover of The Shadows instrumental hit single "FBI" from 1961.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=86geb...
"Greg! The Stop Sign" peaked at #10 in Triple J's Hottest 100 of 1995 and it was the second single from the album 'Machiavelli and the Four Seasons', which was TISM's highest charting album. There was a hidden agenda in the music video, as it was supporting the "Save the St Kilda Club" movement. The music video was directed by Mark Hartley.
LYRICS
_______
The guy who slagged the football team
Those yobs were not for him
He turns into a real estate agent
Who believes in discipline
The guy who's the first to use cocaine
The wild boy breaking free
He'll end up in a court of law
As a prosecuting Q.C.
Remember the school captain?
Success was a matter of time
I can hear her now as she screams
"Greg, you missed the stop sign"
Forget Snoop Doggy Dog
Forget ol' Ice T
The true word out on the streets
Is produced by the T.A.C.
What good's the use of striving?
As life's road in front unravels
We get to do the driving
But don't choose the direction we travel
Do your homework or wag for weeks,
graffiti the Dandedong line
It don't matter much when you hear that scream
"Greg, you missed the stop sign"
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Some time in the next ten thousand years
A comet's gonna wipe out all trace of Man
I'm banking on it coming before
My end of year exam
The rich kid, becomes a junkie
The poor kid, an advertiser
What a tragic waste of potential
Being a junkie's not so good, either
Your folks worked hard for what you've got
You're the fruit of their vine
But who cares what you sow when what you reap is
Greg, you missed the stop sign?
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Bought a car just the other day
Man, could that baby run?
But you know what they always say
There's always a better one
Got a tumor in my brain
It's creeping to my lungs
And I've searched around in vain
Can't find me a better one
Hardwired into everyone's head
Is the person they're gonna be
Growing up is not a matter of choice
It's a matter of wait and see
So kids, yeah, you can do it
You can be the best
Girls can do anything
You can pass the test
I'm okay, you're okay, we're okay, we're fine
I thought I heard a semi-trailer
Greg, you missed the stop sign
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!
Greg! the stop sign!

Well that just flew right over their heads...... Saw TISM tonight, cracking gig, was like being teleporting back to 1999 when I last saw them. Such a fun, unhinged live music experience. Their greatest attribute and weakness was that uniquely Australian satirical humour.

reminds me of hearing this song on JJJ driving to work in the morning : ) PS the moral of the story according to this song is that your life and everything is pre-determined, and you don't have any actual control over your fate. Just like Greg's fate was sealed when he missed the stop sign, poor Greg.

A little info on TISM or This Is Serious Mum is a seven-piece anonymous alternative rock band from Melbourne, Australia. The group was formed on 30 December 1982 by vocalist/drummer Humphrey B. Flaubert, bassist/vocalist Jock Cheese and keyboardist/vocalist Eugene de la Hot Croix Bun, and enjoyed a large underground/independent following.

The bit in the chorus about "Greg, the stop sign!" is about him not seeing the traffic sign and stopping, so he's t-boned by a car or truck coming through the intersection and dies. All that effort making plans, and you can be gone in an instant.

This song has a special place for me as I also missed a stop sign once with 5 of my mates in the car with me - One of them call out at the last second, "shane! the stop (bang)...sign". Then he said, "never mind" as I slid over it sideways in the rain...was so funny and I copped shiit about it for years after. "Shane, watch out for the....never mind".

In answer to the question about the cost of hiring a stadium - the clip was filmed at the old suburban home ground of St Kilda Football Club. Someone connected with the band knew a couple of the footy players and the agreement was made to film the players at training and use the oval.

Got to meet a member of TISM the other day in circumstances I can't relate for....reasons.... Despite the fact that I am 55 and had seen them live, he almost seemed embarrassed to say he'd been in the band. He was, as many of the famous musicians I have met, more interested in my band, and what instruments I have. Told him my long boring story about how my ex-wife bought a plastic Christmas tree at a second hand shop in a cardboard box that had "GREG, XMAS TREE" written on it, so we decided that was the tree's actual name. Every Christmas when we set him up I'd sing loudly as I put it together. The TISM member gave me a massive eyeroll and a chuckle.

TISM are one of the great Aussie bands. Unequalled live, with lyrical humour that only an Australian would get. Definitely an Aussie band for Aussies. Levels of satire and taking the piss out of themselves and others only Aussies do. I’ve seen them many times live and owned every album. A truly great band. Checkout Great trucking songs of the Renaissance, and The beasts of suburban albums fir some earlier, possibly harder hitting songs. “T.I.S.M. are shit.” (Any true tism fan understands this quote)

This song was also controversial at the time as it loosely references the death Darren Millane who was a very famous AFL player of the Collingwood Football Club, on the 7th of October 1991 Millane was extremely intoxicated with a blood alcohol reading of 0.332% when the vehicle he was driving clipped the back of a semi trailer and rolled killing him instantly, Millane earlier on in his career was the captain of the Dandenong VFL club.

These guys were one of the great live shows. They always wore outfits that hid their identities. The rumours were a lot of the band were serious professionals who couldn't risk the dichotomy ie super outrageous shows and songs and careers. The band were accidentally outed, real names not their performance personas, by a intern on a TV appearance in the credits at the end of that show. Things did get serious because that was a part of their performances. Some of the stage costumes were really out there including playing in sumo outfits. Classic and great live. Definitely way better live than on vinyl. Brilliant. Fans flocked to see them to see what they would cook up next. Once outed the impact was gone.

Aussie here and I still remember having a drinking sesh at my house circa 2004 and this song came on and everyone just stopped what they were doing and sang along wholeheartedly. Such a fun song and my favourite of the band, hands down. Well he does hear the end of it, because coming through the intersection he missed the stop sign on is a semi trailer (also called a tractor truck or eighteen wheeler over in the USA). The end sort of sounds a bit like screeeeeech crash tinkle tinkle drip drip. With added screaming effects. Dunno that they're alive for the bonus tracks of ambulance and police sirens. And yes it's TISM like tiz-um. TISM are basically an insanely clever Uni band. Their lyrics are awesome. Think of them Like Blink 182 but with far more intellectual scope, more dodgy in jokes, far more existential angst, and deliberately dodgy electronica due to their complete lack of Travis Barker. Hmmm. Imagine TISM with Travis Barker. Intriguing.

See, the only problem with you guys reacting to TISM is that they are very, very Australian. Many of their lyrics are extremely Australia-centric and genuinely will not make sense to someone who didn't grow up here. In the 80s and 90s. This song, for example, is (kind of) a joke about a certain, specific PSA on Aussie TV. Please note, this is not a criticism at all. There is literally no way for you guys to have known that. Still, it's great music. Of course, having said that, this is literally the only channel I could find that actually has reactions to TISM.

Haha, so true, I'd like to see them react to "The Mordialloc Road Duplicator. Growing up in that area I can so relate to that song.

@@ChrisAnderson42 They might get away with (He'll Never Be An) Old Man River. That one's a bit more universal, if you know your music history.

@@uncle_thulhu So Foster's car park Boogie wouldn't get the reaction I had when I first heard it?

@@ChrisAnderson42 I dunno. There's plenty of their stuff that even I don't understand, because I'm from Sydney and they're from Melbourne, and a fair number of their songs are very Melbourne-centric. They were great at Big Day Out 96 though.

We say TISM as in tissum as far as I know here in Australia. We are not too formal here. T. I. S.M. if we underlined every letter of the word the name and spelt it out other Australians would go crazy ha ha. Too formal. Too British sounding. Ad or Advert for advertisement is another example. Abbreviate and shorten words. Oz for Australia. Aussie. So many examples. Or we make up our own words.
