Brent Smith, the singer and main song writer has said that this song is misunderstood a lot, here’s what he said about it Brent Smith (the lead singer and songwriter) has stated in an interview: The inspiration from the song really came from - I think a lot of people kinda take a literal sense because of the lyrics - but the song is basically about the day that you wake up and you look at yourself in the mirror and you finally decide that you want to try to become comfortable in your own skin, and realize that you’re gonna have to make yourself happy before you’re going to make anyone else happy. And basically, the 45 isn’t an actual literal term for a gun, I used it as a metaphor for the world, the .45 is actually the world and what it hands you every day of your life. When you get up, it’s a gift to be alive to begin with. A lot of different people, when I’ve talked about it, they said, “Do you really honestly mean that?” And I’m like, “Well, yeah.” Because I’ve been in that situation where I didn’t know if I wanted to continue going on and I didn’t know how to necessarily make myself comfortable with who I was, trying to find a way of learning more about myself. And you come from a dark place sometimes, and that’s really the reality of the song. It’s about overcoming and about moving forward. And it’s basically about understanding that it’s not always going to be good, but you really have no one to blame for yourself if you don’t move forward. That’s where the whole, “Nobody knows what I believe,” [comes from] because we’re all individuals. So that’s really where it comes from, it’s about moving on, really.

i mean yea, of course you can make a special "meaning" behind a song about suicide, or shooting yourself. Its just too simple to be something as deep as they say it was. He definitely wrote it as a song about literally shooting yourself. Surely it got some backlash, and thats why hes saying "no no no, its figurative, i assure you!". shinedown is my favorite band, but you cant really hide from the meaning of this song. the story he told was LITERALLY about someone attempting to shoot themselves

"Send a message to the unborn child keep your eyes open for a while There's a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else There's a piece of a puzzle known as life Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight" An unborn child doesn't mean that they DIED. It simply means that they haven't been born yet.

Halfway through the video you were talking about the lyrics take a look at their acoustic set live in Kansas City here on KZbin he explains the story behind it it's a really deep story he says it's about a friends cousin or something like that but alot of people speculate it's actually about himself

Also I think that acoustic set sounds way better than any of their studio stuff just in my own opinion and was super cool how he explained as many of the stories of the songs like he did

Good reaction. You have barely scratched the surface of Shinedown's greatness....I encourage you to dive further into the rabbit hole, its worth it. Brent (singer) is an amazing singer/songwriter. Another band with great lyrics is Falling in Reverse. Check out Popular Monster. Have not seen a bad reaction to this song yet. Video is sic too.

Watch the video of this live from Kansas and he explains the whole song and it is beautiful. Every lyric Brent Smith writes has a meaning and they are all great. This song is about a guy that seems so happy go lucky but is actually very depressed and attempts to shoot himself and is angry he even failed at that. But once his family and friends understand he hides his pain and lack of self esteem with jokes they help him and he turns out to have a great life. Listen to Brent explain it and you will want to listen to it forever.
