I work in a foundry have done for nearly 42 years and moulded with greensand for 41 of them I was always taught to cut the ingates into the mould on the top part which I think you call the cope I've always called it the topper but I love watching you work and your videos.

That's interesting. I do that sometimes if I want the gate to come in a part of the casting that will be machined. Some tosser Troll was very rude critising my methods in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqSll3xui92gZ6s I was going to remove the comments but left them so people could see what an arsehole he was.

@gblpst81 Yes it a crankcase. This one is not my design I have purchashed drawings. I do use CAD to redraw the parts to make the patterns.

@jarodeells Correct, but its easier to align the flasks if there is more clearance between the core and the mould. Core is a sodium silicate and CO2 one.

@AllenTrucks It takes about 15min to melt. My home made burner uses propane fuel.
@myfordboy14 жыл бұрын
@nemocheerio The metal can be too hot, it should not be glowing red. I pour as soon as its liquid after the flux and degass are added.You can tell if all the metal has melted when you cannot feel any lumps when you give it a stir. I dont measure the temp with anything.

@payoflaco Its an blind hole but the shape of the rest of the casting meant the pattern could not be withdrawn without using a core.
@myfordboy13 жыл бұрын
@PuGZoR The pattern is made up in two pieces. They can be stuck together with newspaper between for final shaping, then split apart.

I have not tried to cast around a tube.It could act as a heat sink and give problems with shrinkage but worth a try. You could heat up the tube before casting, that would help.

I did a video ( part 25 in this series) showing the metal to avoid. The alloy used in extrusions for example will have different properties to that used for cast items. Best stick to scrap that has been cast then you know it's suitable. I have been getting great results with alloy car wheels.

Your videos are absolutely enthralling. Very interesting. Can I ask though, when you make patterns with two complex halves such as this one, do you make one pattern and cut it in half (might be difficult given you'd need to make up the cut width somehow, possibly by recessing the pattern slightly?), or do you make the two halves separately?
@nemocheerio14 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these videos. You have inspired me to build my own furnace. How do you know when the metal is hot enough to pour? Is it possible to get it too hot? Do you use a thermometer?

Thanks for the Awesome Videos. What scrap do you look for, or avoid? I heard one guy say not to use extruded aluminum, but he did not say why. I have been collecting cast aluminum but have other as well.

Thanks-I was wondering about just that and at some ungodly hour this morning after having watched the last of your great video classroom, I decided to use a core. I would like to try the sodium silicate, but for the first of these I am going to use a kiln dried refractory mix of silica flour and hydrocal and see what happens. Again-thanks for your videos. How did you learn? On your own, or did someone with experience like you teach you?

I am up to # 18 and feel like I am in the best classroom ever. I have a project I am just about ready to try and cast and I am wondering if you have ever had any experience with casting aluminum around a copper pipe or brass tubing?

Nice casting. I suspect that if your core stuck out farther you wouldn't have the flashing to drill out. But you probably aren't planning to make 10000 of these. What materials are in your core? Was it baked to harden?

@wjackstl7 жыл бұрын
you removed dross, then added salt wrapped in foil to act as a flux. I'm curious why you did not add salt wrapped in foil before skimming off the dross? is that not the point of flux, to reduce the amount of dross?
@myfordboy7 жыл бұрын
Before anything is added there is already dross on the top from paint or dirt that was on the metal. This is removed first. The flux will then bring up more.

I see your thinking, to allow air to escape but the place for a riser is to feed the cast with metal as it cools.
