I love metal detecting. I just found an 1891 Indian Head Penny in my backyard. I've also found a 1812 Classic Head large cent and a Braided Hair large cent on my yard along with artifacts from the 17, 17 and early 1900's. I hope you find lots of awesome history Robert!

another wonderful, exciting adventure. just a suggestion (I saw this on Rehab Addict (Nicole Curtis) ) - get an old crock pot and let those artifacts "cook" (on low) overnight to remove a great deal of dirt and grime and whatever - she did it with old hardware to remove paint & such ... just a suggestion !!! thanks for sharing it all with us - never a dull moment on the Old Byrd Farm 🙂

Love your collection. If that is a zince with glass inside the lid for Ball, then it could date from about the 1930s. It was then that Ball introduced the 2 piece zinc & glass lid that used a rubber sealing ring for canning. This was replaced by 1964 with the lids we use today. I remember my mom and grandmas canning using the zinc & glass tops with the red rubber seal as a child. I'm only 56 go that was a few years ago. My Grandmas and mom were afraid of the "new" lids. In fact I still have a couple of the zinc lids and the blue/green jars they were used on in my pantry. I use them to store my herbs in.

I think you could use it on the spoon too. I have lots of old Mason jars but never that lucky to the kind with the Zinc tops. You did alright kiddo. Get that pin pointer back soon. Love to have another day like today. There’s still hope for the Indian head penny. ♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟🌟🌟

Not to rain on the coin parade, but farmers would also store their garden seeds in jars and take drinking water to the fields in jars. Both are very possible in this scenario. I remember from my childhood, my grandmother always showed up with a couple of jars of seeds with her when we headed out to plant the garden.

When the banks folded up during the depression a lot of people would hide their money in old mason jars bury them out in the yard or in the crawl space or place them under a fence post. My friends dad found a jar of mercury dimes under an old fence post .

Cool stuff. I've never metal detected. But the coolest thing I ever found was a surface find in my parents dirt driveway, right where it meets the paved road. It was a 1911 dime. When I cleaned it up and looked at it under a magnifying glass I could see that it was new when dropped. All the sharp details were there under all the scratches.
