Metal Detecting An Abandoned Ghost Town (With 50 People!)

Hey guys! Metal detecting is something I've always wanted to do at Cerro Gordo. I've tried many times during my stay here, but never fully got the hang of it. But given that Cerro Gordo had so many people living here over so long, there has to be things in the ground!! So to try to unearth any of those artifacts a bit quicker than I could on my own, I invited out 50 viewers of the channel!
It was an absolutely amazing weekend and one that I'll remember for a very long time to come. I hope to have many more group events in the coming years!
A special thanks to Chris Kam and Andre who came out and filmed this, so I could just focus on interacting with everyone!

Great video!! The "ring" at 9:42 is a Signet Ring and used for sealing an envelope with hot wax, the bust on the face is in negative form. After the author had inserted a letter into an envelope, it was held closed by pouring liquid wax from a candle onto the flap. The face would be pressed into the wax as it cooled making a positive bust on the envelope leaving a nice "personal touch" for the recipient of the letter to enjoy upon receiving it...

The seal was more than a nice "personal touch" or a pretty decoration though. An intact seal meant that the letter had not been read by prying eyes along its route to the recipeient. A broken seal meant the opposite. Seals were also often unique so that no one could open the envelope and then reseal it with a similar signet.

@@melantorja True! But I think the idea was a lot like the idea is with today and the lick-and-seal envelopes. Most people aren't going to go through all the trouble of heating an envelope over a steaming pot to open it and read it just like most people back in olden times weren't going to go through the difficult process of breakign a seal and painstakingly re-sealing it. The wax seal wasn't a perfect method of ensuring secrecy, but it was a good attempt.

Brent, as a coin collector that 1850 “nickel” is actually a half dime. Still a 5c coin, but they were made of silver back then. People didn’t start calling them nickels until they started making them out of nickel in 1866! Great video. Watched all of them this is the first time I’ve commented

As an archaeologist, I have a deep inner hate for metal detectors which I can't even turn off fully when watching this actually wholesome video. Too many people are destroying archaeological sites and stealing the treasures of the past which are so important to understand where we come from because they just want to hunt for their own treasures to take home or sell. PLEASE! If you want to go metal detecting, do respect your local laws! Do not just dig up random artifacts which you know nothing about. If you find something of interest that's not just a tin can or the likes, contact archaeologists. Do not take any found items home with you. And never destroy or vandalize the objects in the ground - seeing their entire context is incredibly important. It's just a thing of respect for the past times and the science. And also... If you get caught stealing or trafficking artifacts, most countries will have some long lists of heavy sentences for you.

Hi Brent, The silver ring that was found is a seal ring. They use them to seal letters with hot wax then press the ring into it leaving their own personal stamp!

BTW, below by the American Hotel while we were chatting, I mentioned finding lotsa of large peices melted Lead. In hindsight, those large chunks could have been melted bars of lead/silver! I left them on the surface and the rain might bring out the shine for an easy find... Hope its silver that was stashed in the Hotel!!!

What an absolute haul. I love how enthusiastic you are about finding all of this stuff. A lot of people might look at it as scrap or junk, but I love how you can look at even the smallest piece of something and understand that it has a story of it's own. Every single object that you find there was handled by someone at some point, and each one of those people started life as a baby, grew older and had stories and memories they gathered throughout their lives. I bet if you told a miner in 1870 that, in the year 2021, someone would be showing their kettle or clock to thousands of people around the world, they'd laugh at you. Even if we don't know their names or their faces, we know they exist through what they left there, and that's what makes what you're doing so special.

Metal detecting has always been my Zen. I could spend days out there honestly. I've always been up to find the next hidden thing that we walk over everyday. I'm not in it to keep anything. I give everything I find to either the property owners or on lookers. I love to teach everyone who is curious about the hobby and the science behind it. I'll usually bring a backup detector and hand it to maybe an owner or their kids and teach them about it. I also teach about digging and repecting the land, that is literally more than half of being a responsible detectorist. Love the videos, thanks for sharing!

You should think about this as a long-term plan. Do it a few times a year around the same times so people can plan around it. Set up grids on a map and keep everyone together and extensively sweep each grid before moving to the next section. Maybe even having 2 sweeps, 1 for non-ferrous and the second for ferrous metals. This way it will only take a few years (depending on how often you do this) to sweep every inch of the town and surroundings. You could simply give them utility wire markers those orange blue yellow white cheap flags and number them with each participants given number. Then the participant writes down a more specific number for discussing in the future that person 43 found item 27 and it was a nickel and that could be a way you could go back and grid I don’t know

Metal detecting is a great hobby, first time I ever went out into just a random field that someone gave me permission to use, I found a coin token from 1849 which was used by employers to pay their staff which allowed the employees to spend the tokens in the mills. In the same field I found a royal artillery button from WW1, managed to trace back that they had used the area as training. It’s about the finding out the history behind the items after finding them, and your in a great place for some brilliant history finds! Enjoy your new hobby!

Just up the road from where I've lived most of my life is a nature trail that I still walk down every once in a while, with the few small exceptions of some conspicuously placed stones there was no visible evidence that the area had ever been anything but forest. I'm 50 and only maybe 10 years ago I found out that there used to be an old saw mill, a gunsmith and a stone cutter whom used to have their businesses out there, so for the heck of it I bought a metal detector and took a look.I ended up finding what may have been either a well or a privy and found several objects near it including a flat button in the loose stone lining that had clearly been lost by the person whom built it, it's well over 150 years old if not much older. I have a suspicion that area is where the stone cutter used to work as I THINK I may have found part of a stone splitting wedge, which is pretty cool because he was the man whom carved many of the town's gravestones as well as other historic stone structures that are well over 200 years old. I also found part of an unusually small horseshoe that must have been on something like a pony or donkey, it was near the well/privy that given how deep it was was also extremely old and probably belonged to the stone cutter or whomever used that spot. Long story short there's something particularly satisfying about rediscovering links to a previously unknown past, especially when all visible evidence on the surface is gone like it is on that nature trail, it's like statements from people from the distant past announcing "we were here, we were real"

I found a log stamping hammer in my michigan woods and was able to trace the stamp back to a German immigrant, ended up there was a whole town lost in the woods over time. Lots of awesome artifacts

That's awesome. I know the feeling of amazement and wonder, thinking what people used to do there. On the way into the town rubbish tip is a sad, neglected looking building which it turns out is an Elizabethan manor house. Not far away the beauty spot car park turns out to be where there was a factory in the 1700s, at the start of the industrial revolution. It was attacked in a riot and didn't last long!

I really liked your analogy of how one more sweep with the metal detector must've been what the miners went through looking for gold or silver. Sometimes that last pass just when you want to quit turns out to be fruitful. Continue to love the channel and your efforts at Cerro Gordo. Someday hope to visit and do some photography. I love watching the town getting rebuilt with the new people. They feel the same as you do. Also I thought it was great of other you tuber (Heavy D ) coming up and helping with the American hotel and the truck donation (army truck). All of those things keep me watching. Metal detecting has given purpose to a lot of people. It absolutely is a treasure hunt every time you go in even your own yard. The fact that treasure is subjective to interests means anyone can find happiness with the hobby.
