Lunch just isn't the same anymore without watching the Hoover Boys while I eat (eat your lunch). While Brad's seated was great, Kurt, your cut 8 Reale was outstanding!!! Yet another historic connection with coins in the English language. For those who don't know, the person cutting the coin for change (using a hammer and chisel) if he did so unfairly, became known as a "chiseler." Your find just brought that story back to mind...thanks!
@thehooverboys8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the history lesson Bill! I've tried so hard to find more info on how they cut the coins. You just answered that in your comment. I've seen some bad cuts out there from Chiselers! Love how sharp mine is. I got lucky. All the best!

Hey, you don't need to make a comment on my posts in the future--I know you get a chuckle out of some of them, but I'd rather you take that precious time and spend with your family. Personally, I would make a post on the main Hoover Boy page that you read all the comments (you could hit like to let people know you've read it) but given your popularity that is a lot of time to respond to comments and I would frame your post in the manner I just did. Your wife graciously allows you more time out in the field than most, i would do this if it was me. Just throwing that out there for a suggestion dear sir...........
@thehooverboys8 жыл бұрын
I appreciate it Aggie. Before i had a channel i would comment and ask questions to other channels. 99% of the time i would never get a response. Some people do this for money. I do it for fun. Its hard keeping up but i don't let it cut into my family time.

Awesome day and great finds!... Kurt, hope you don't mind.Thought I share my thoughts on hunting old homes and farm houses. Tip.. what I've learned in 14 years about hunting old farm houses is a lot. I belonged to the local Historical Society for several years also (suggest joining yours in your county) and belonged to 3 hunting clubs for 7 years. But just the short of it is ....The first place you always search the most throughly is the front yard and all areas considered and associated with the front. If there are farmed field next to the house..the family would dump house trash at times into the field know that the next plowing would bury the trash.. thats why so many relics are found in corn fields! lol Men working in the back and in the fields didn't carry much money or none at all wearing work cloths. Money was lost in a number of odd ways in the fields of young wheat, hay, alfalfa, flak, barley, oats, milo and other various soft long stemmed grains. Coins lost by the teen girls and boys taking blankets and such and laying it down of the green soft plants...well out of site of the elders. lol Women wore dresses for the most part and did not carry money while in the back yard doing the wash and other chores unless taking their money out to bury in between the cloth line poles stashed a few inches below ground level in a mason jar or metal box. That way while she was in the kitchen most of the day she could keep an eye on her money out the back kitchen window. Kids always played ball and stuff in the front yard and on the sides of the house losing whatever small change they felt cool carrying about. So most money and lost artifacts are found in the front and side yards near the front. People of course spent most of the summer evenings in the front yard... because of boredom they sat on the porch waiting for neighbors to pass by and ones would stop and chat standing around by the porch front drive, under a big tree or out by the street edge or areas to stay out of the sun on hot days. That's why big oaks were always planted in front yards and along streets so people walking far or in their buggies could stay as cool as possible along their journeys They would stop half way to town and sit and cool horses down under these tree in the middle of nowhere but planted there on purpose. ..So check under these wayward trees out in no mans land..... Sundays people would always invite family and folks over after church and maybe for dinner...usually dressed in their finest and carrying coins. There are many small gold coin denominations that are never found because they are almost impossible to detect at 5" or more deep and if you do hear them they are weak and sound like most of the shit.. It pays to have a Gold Bug to go over hunted out farm house sites and parks for rings and coins.. it detects silver also!. Dining rooms were small for large groups. Most eating on hot summer days were done outside on the east side of the houses to be the coolest and out of the sun. People on Sundays and Saturdays carried money because those again were shopping days, church and socializing with neighbors. People coming to socialize on weekends were carrying money, pocket watches...basically wearing their best of everything and jewelry. They had sickles to cut the grass or weeds and lawns were usually 3-5 " long and when something was dropped ...it was out of site! Again they would socialize in the front yards not the back as people do today and from the 40's on. Before the 40's the front yard was the place to be. The front yard grass and flowers were kept up somewhat for entertaining while the back was usually way overgrown and heaps of garbage and had the stinking out house, stinky chicken coops, stinking cows and stinking pigs. Can you imagine the smell on a hot humid day in the back! lol Quick tip 2 and 3! With no air conditioning and no breeze on a hot day it was fashionable to open a window and sit on the window pane.. money dropped out of pockets as did jewelry off of wrists and necks along with other items like spoons, forks, pocket watches etc. Check the ground 3 feet all around the homes very well in this case. Number 3.. the cloth-line... The sun comes up from east to west...So cloths had the longest amount of time to dry if mom hung the on a line from a pole east and the other directly to the west in an open area that she could watch from the kitchen window making sure that the goats and dogs did not get into her clean cloths. while the sheets were hung she would go out in the middle of the hanging sheets where no one could see her and add coins to her buried jar of money. Find where the back window of the kitchen would be and try to imagine where mom would have had the clothing within a short distance form the back door. If you find coins say 30 feet or so from the back of the house draw an imaginary line east and west and detect in a strait line in either direction swinging 3 feet to the north to 3 feet to the south and hope fully you find a long line of coins that have fallen out of clean cloths when she hung the pants over the lines. If you cant come up with more coins after the first one...search in a spiral until you find another coin and repeat this process. Trees a hundred feet or so in either direction of the cloths line would have been cut down for the most amount of sun to be gotten..especially in winter. This was crucial to the family warmth and health to have dry cloths the next day to wear. The cloth line would have been mostly in the spot for many decades.... means many coins! Quit tip #4.. people did not really use banks until the late 30's to save their money.. they did not trust banks, If they got robbed they lost their money..if bank bellied up which many did they lost their money so grampa, gramma, dad, mom, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles ALL buried their money in secret stashes out somewhere on the property without telling a soul where they buried it ..maybe 3-7 inches only under the ground..just out of site since there were no metal detectors and they did not have to dig dig every week or so to add or take money out of their jar or box of metal lids or full metal construction. Dad worked hard and was not in the house until nightfall.. had dinner, washed up, smoked a few pipefuls and went to bed looking out his bedroom window in sight of the spot he buries the majority of the houses income! If you have an erected old farm house and know where the bedroom is for the father, detect all over while keeping his bedroom window in clear site!!! when he got up in the middle of the night from say any noise he ran to his window to see if someone was digging around for his money. Thieves know this back then because most every man buried his money in site of his window. Grampas liked to bury their money where it was easy not to forget when your old. Main places would be next to a fence line like next to the 4th fence pole down from the barn or way in the back five feet out from the trunk under a large branch on the oak tree, ...Or under the big rock in the back 40... just under the side of the rock on a 45 degree angle...so detect big rock bases with your coil on a 45 degree angle. Think where you would bury your money being and old man and old lady. Grampas had a lot of old coins save thru their lives. And when the old got sick.. from lack of modern medicine they died often in 3 days and were delirious up to death and could never give the right directions where their money was or died to quickly to tell anyone. I have no idea where gramma buried hers .lol Probably together with grampas!

+The Hoover Boys, That's the way it goes. Granted people will always lose things even in modern times. Metal detecting for the really old stuff is a slowly vanishing commodity. With greater interest in the hobby and advanced equipment it's definitely getting harder to find those virgin sites. But you guys have proven again and again that a site is never hunted out, it's now going to be a test to see who's patient enough to find what's left. Sadly I'm not the best in that department, I'm bad about giving up on a site to quickly. Thanks

I watched this one during lunch at work, Kurt. You'll probably be amused to know that about halfway through your audible reaction to finding the cut 8, I had to mute it for fear my co-workers were going to wonder what the hell was going on. :-) Massive congrats, BTW!
