Nothing in my experience, more epitomizes metal detecting than this episode. From the build up of learning the history of the site to actually detecting it told two separate stories. The one of hope and the one of reality. Excellent job to you for not only showing what it can be like but for doing it under adverse conditions. I also commend you for your refusal for being monatised. I understand completely, good for you!! Thanks for another video, good luck and good health.

Wow.. thank you very much for your kind words. I try to portray the hunt for what the hobby really is. I want to expose the fun in the history as well as the hunt because there are so many folks that just focus on the bucket loads of silver and large coppers they find. I’ve never found bucket loads for the 22-23 years of detecting I’ve done and won’t those who feel bad because they aren’t finding it switched to see that... it’s just not like that unless you have one real special place to detect. I also want people to see that all the other stuff you find is cool to and rewarding to identify, find and share with others. Hopefully this makes sense what I’m typing. Lol. I’m just a regular detectorist out here doing whatever I can to help better my odds on finding stuff and I hope others can utilize what I’m doing for their own hunts. This hobby is a lot of fun as well as rewarding in more ways than just silver coins. Thank you for checking out the video as well as commenting. Take care. 🙂

Seriously... thank you very much for your kind words. Means so much to have folks enjoying what I’m doing. I honestly try my best and keep it real by making a video of every hunt.. good or bad, problems or not and the reality of not always coming home with buckets of gold and silver coins as most portray in videos. Makes me sad people get discouraged because of expectations that are ultimately hard to achieve unless you found a lost treasure or buried half of it. Hopefully this makes sense. Hoping getting closer to the soil with the coil will help pull out smaller targets like the coins and such. Yes... the ground here in places is hard as concrete and in others it’s ok.. The one thing that’s kind of getting me on this one is the stalks from the beans on the hill, they are blocking me by 4-5” off the ground. The beans in the flat area aren’t the same kind and have a different structure allowing me to get my coil closer to the ground. Hello 🙂 it’s cool to see that people around the world are doing the same thing with thier free time. Yes, our weather is similar to areas of Russia although Russia has many zones more similar to Canada. Our winter is ending here and spring is about to begin. With all of my sites I gain permission to enter the lands using tax offices and talking to people in the area. If we enter lands in the US there are laws that forbid the tresspass onto lands in which you don’t have permission to enter. You can get into legal problems and cost money defending yourself so it’s not worth it. There still are people who just walk onto others lands and detect if they can’t find the land owner. It’s not a good practice here but it does happen. Thanks for checking out the video as well as commenting. There are a few others on here from Russia that watch too. You are the first fluent in English. I also do videos for Geomatics on Instagram where many subscribers are from Russia, it’s nice to discover how life is like over there. Text books here tell you that it’s very different but after have many discussions with people from over there... we are very similar.

Awesome video Kenny! Some nice finds, some not-so nice finds. I'm awaiting the warmer weather as well, but keep swinging and I wouldn't give up on that field just yet. The thing that sticks in the back of my mind, when I will go to some old sites here is, did people already get the good stuff back in the 70's or 80's when detectors were somewhat popular. I am fascinated with history, and my dream, just as all other detectorists, is to find old relics, old coins, gold, and silver. Nevertheless, keep swinging!
@squarenailsquirrel96385 жыл бұрын
Thank you. LOL, yes I always bring home the good and the bad finds. I believe the warmer weather is coming, this weekend it should break into the 40's and maybe even the 50's. I also have that feeling about the sites being previously hunted especially the ones with standing homes. The farm fields haven't really been a trend until the past 10 years of so with minimal heavy hunting. Hopefully the sites are fresh and not hunted out.. with this site it seems it's not been hunted although there is so much trash and debris that it will take time until I get to some better finds. With each year the land gets tilled and worked, it will always be different and new stuff will come close enough to be heard through the detector. This isn't my only hunts that I will do out there, most all of my field hunts will continue for next year and the following.. they always change and reveal more finds. I also will go back to many past sites if I end up getting another brand of detector. Thank you for commenting and checking out the video. Take care.

Yes, I believe your are correct on that. After cleaning and thinking about the find a little for I realized shotgun slugs have polymer sabots surrounding the actual projectile that fall off once fired. The diameter of the projectile coincides with a shotgun slug of that type... it's on e big piece of lead. That's also true about the cellars and that may be the position of where all the debris were placed and buried. I plan to get back to this site before farming really gets going for the season although time is limited. Thanks for commenting as well as checking out the video.
@f.k.burnham84915 жыл бұрын
Polymer sabots are fairly "recent" . I have a couple of old shotgun slug cartridges that my father had. No sabots, just a paper cartridge, brass base and the slug- imbedded in a wax substance (Paraffin?). It's likely they date back into the 1920-'s or 1930's.

Hey Squirrel. Came over from The Weekly Dirt to take a look. Great video and channel. I’ve subbed and look forward to more of your great content. Love the way you work through your hunt research!! 😀👍🏻 What type of finds pouch is that? Take care, GL&HH. Deano.
@squarenailsquirrel96385 жыл бұрын
Hello 🙂 thanks for tuning in to check out my stuff and greatly appreciate the subscription. The finds pouch is a pouch I make, Ive been through three versions and soon to be using my 4th. Someday I will make a limited number of these each year to see if folks out there have any issues with them before I would make larger quantities. There are 3 people using them now with Aquachigger being one of them. I’ve done a lot of testing through usage to make sure the things hold 15 pounds easily, stay open, carry standard dig gear effectively, everything is reachable and out of the way for a natural cadence of swinging the machine, waterproof (spray off with a hose) as well as wear nicely locking into your belt loop or by an auxiliary strap so the bag doesn’t slide around your waist. When I get to the point of releasing some I will make a video. Problem is they take me from start to finish at least 7 hours to make on an industrial leather sewing machine. Thank you for tuning in as well as commenting. Take care.

No worries Squirrel. That pouch sounds like quite an endeavour so the very best of luck with your design. I would definitely be interested in one when they’re available as they look great and seem very ergonomic. Deano. 😀👍🏻

Ha! What a user name. Laughing for real right now. 🙂 thanks for checking the video out as well as subscribing, means a lot to have folks on here watching what I’m doing. Takes a lot of work making these videos and if people enjoy them than it’s fully worth it. The MX Sport is a great machine and really does the job... I’m going to send in the next message a standard answer I have in my notes for when people ask about if I like the V3i or the MX Sport better... just some food for thought. It’s cool that being able to check out the usage and performance on here is helping you out. One thing to note... the MX Sport with the 7” detech is the best setup I’ve ever ran with a small coil and pulling targets out of an iron infested site... it’s really amazing performance. Thanks for checking the video out as well as commenting, glad you joined in.
@squarenailsquirrel96385 жыл бұрын
The V3i is an awesome machine and is capable of finding deep targets as well as truly utilizing three frequencies at the same time. The MX Sport is a great machine and capable of finding the same depth targets as the V3i though my testing and as my opinion, it runs on onky ine frequency. Focusing on the downfalls as well as some highlights now. V3i, from starting usage to being an expert you will always have that little doubt in the back of your mind asking you “did I set it up wrong, why am I missing targets, what settings did I forget to change”. With the Sport... that doesn’t exist. With the V3i you have at least a year it to two, like it took me, to speak the detectors language and get proficient at using it. With the Sport, that doesn’t exist. With my V3i I worry about walking back in the woods during the summer with threats of rain, I want to water detect as well as lay my machine in snow, mud, morning dew but I can’t and if rain is a threat I have to remember a trash bag to protect. With the Sport.. that problem doesn’t exist. With the V3i, I have to wet towel off the machine after getting it dirty, and the Sport I just spray it off with a hose. The V3i uses 3 frequencies at one time, that diminishes the depth capability of the machineand if you want to go deep, you have to run in single frequency.... the Sport.. it’s single frequency and is a mid range KHz signal for about everything in the field. The Sport has a handcuff that breaks easily and it’s plastic body feels like a toy to me. With the V3i, it’s a tank and my grandkids could probably use it some day because it will last forever. The V3i is an ultimately sensitive machine and you can talks it to exactly what you want to hunt and the site itself utilizing recover delay, best data vs correlate and many other items... With the Sport, you can’t. The V3i experiences tons of issues dealing with EMI, to the point I have had many sites not able to be hunted... So, I break out the Sport, ground balance and start hunting, it is way less effected by it, why? I’m not sure other than maybe the sensitivity levels of the machines. They are both great tools and provide many finds. Both of my machines I bought used off Craigslist. I sent the V3i to Whites to have it gone through and a factory reset done (you can do this yourself too) to have it just like it came new. Just make sure if you get a V3i to register it white whites and change owners info on file as well as make super sure the person you are buying from has the password for the machine, like enter it and make sure it works before purchasing.

Thank you, I try to keep things real and make my videos like we all are going hunting together. Yes, I get a lot of chatter on mine too at time and it’s frustrating. There are techniques to lessen the chatter but sometimes you just can’t get around it. I have found that if I break out the MX Sport in those situations everything is fine, guessing the V3i is just so much more sensitive that the EMI and minerals cause it to false, etc. Thanks for checking out the video as well as commenting.

have you been able to run the mixed mode audio on your v3i? you may find deeper targets running and getting used to this setting. I run this setting on my vx3. very cool,
@squarenailsquirrel96385 жыл бұрын
I have been able to run both audios at the same time, I actually do it with Disc in one ear and all metal in the other. I just don’t like all the noise for some reason and i’ve never been good at finding a “good” target with all metal. Maybe someday i’ll take on the setting full time and get it learned well enough to be effective. Thanks for checking out the video as well as commenting. Take care.

The best old sites are usually the ones that you find without research that are not on any maps and were long gone before all the trash of the 20th century. Mostly 17th and 18th century. Not gonna find that in Ohio like here on the east coast. Ive found a few awesome uncontaminated 19th century sites but it aint easy no matter where you are.
@squarenailsquirrel96385 жыл бұрын
Very true. Back home in Kentucky there aren’t any maps to assist which leaves all field searching and word of mouth to find old sites. Most back home to back to when Kentucky was Kentucky county of Virginia and really takes you back in time. Things are so different being up here in Ohio for the last couple years living and detecting, seems like the detecting pressure has been so heavy for past 40 years but I still hunt hoping to find what’s left over and the occasional never hunted site. I wish I was over on the east coast, it’s truly amazing what folks pull out of the ground over there. Thank you for checking out the video as well as commenting. Take care.

Thank you.. .that's my first try with it and a big learning curve. Trying to add a little to the videos and save me some time while at the site, I typically go detecting for 6 hours or more with 2 of it getting setup for filming and making my intro and ending. If I can keep that coil to the dirt longer by doing these at home once in awhile I'd have a better chance of pulling up more good finds. Good info on the dag tags.. that's my first Ohio one. I thought it was trash when I found it but got home and cleaned it up and the text came through the rust. Thank you for checking out the video.

Great video, very interesting and educational how you figured out why you were getting so much trash. I'm curious to know why you didn't use the Detech 13" coil on your V3i?
@squarenailsquirrel96386 жыл бұрын
On a site like this the 13” coil would be quite large due the amount of targets in the ground. When there are lots of targets in the ground a large coil will sweep over more than one target at a time, what this does is causes a combination VDI. Combination VDI’s don’t reflect either of the targets in the ground causing a silver thimble by a rusty bolt to appear to be a piece of trash. Let’s say the silver thimble is 5 inches away from the rusty bolt, with the 13” I’m not likely to hit the silver thimble. With a 7” coil or even a 10” coil... I’m more likely not be over both the silver thimble and rusty bolt at the same time allowing me to find the silver thimble by only getting the real VDI of the 80’s silver thimble and -15 of the rusty bolt. I would be able to tell something is there to investigate. Let me know if this makes sense, if not i’ll take another try at it

Afterthought of the site makes me think the bean stalks and other grown (i believe rye grass) is keeping me too far away from the ground with my coil to be effective on smaller targets unless they are close to the surface... this won't be my last trip out there.. hopefully I can pull some more stuff up next time. Outstanding video! You sure do some great research. Where do you find this atlas you keep mentioning? Is it specific to one area? That hollowpoint bullet looks like one used in a sabot in a shotgun shell. It would not have rifling marks after firing because it rode in the sabot as it went down the barrel. Getting back to the research, since you know who lived there, have you considered looking up the descendant to give them an artifact from your digs? I'm a genealogist also, and I think that would be kind of cool to do... the family might shed some light on what happened to the site also. anyway, loved the video!
