There's a fun story that the band shared about him that he recorded their first album in one sitting because "he had things to do later and didn't want to re-record anything" and honestly while their first album isn't the best album ever, the drums are still pretty precise even if filmed all in one sitting.

I think Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is one of their best albums personally, but the songwriting isn't the best in spots. Especially the lyrics, but songa like To End the Rapture, We Come Out at Night, and The Art of Subconscious Illusion go pretty hard.

Jimmy was so accurate that his drums sounded fake most of the time - and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. He was good enough to be a high-caliber studio musician (which is really high praise, most drummers couldn't cut it as a professional studio drummer. Like not even close). His precision and talent was unreal; one of the all-time greats - he is and will be missed

The Rev's dynamics are nuts. For this style of music, you could pretty easily catch yourself just banging the hell out of every drum. But every time I see him go for his ride cymbal, he's always using very light taps, because that's all he needs to do to get the sound he wants. Same with that swell on the crash at the end of the last video you watched, he's very gently bringing the sound out of the cymbal after bringing the whole goddamn house down. All of the Almost Easy recording at the start shows this, too. He just hits the drums as hard as he needs to, which isn't very hard. The man had utter control.

IIRC, Jimmy preferred to get his tracks down in a 'live' recording, ie: playing the track start to finish to make sure it didn't need cutting and resampling. There are a lot of people that prefer to do guitar and drums that way, but it DOES speak to his professionalism behind the kit. The fact he wanted it 'live' so that he wouldn't have to change it when performing says a lot about how much he cared about having it right. Too many bands lean on recording piecemeal and can't play the track start-to-finish live. With Jimmy, it meant he could play the full album the way it was meant to be played when they performed live. Gates is the same way. He'll record one track of his guitar 'live', then double on subsequent tracks to ensure it sounds that way in a concert.

Jimmy was the main reason i picked up drumsticks, alongside Joey. As a massive A7X fan it genuinely hurts to think this man never got to reach his creative peak, his legacy from such a short career still stands up to some of the best metal drummers i've ever seen. He was the heartbeat of Avenged and i can only be thankful that he was replaced by a drummer who is not only capable of playing at Jimmy's level, but also has the ability to replicate his style whilst adding his own individual twist for following albums. RIP Jimmy, and thank you for what you gave us ❤️

So back in 2004 I met the Avenged Sevenfold guys at warped tour, they were playing the Hurley stage which was not one of the main stages but they would soon be massive. I got pictures with them, I got to hang out with them after the sets for a little bit and Jimmy really liked a watch I used to wear that was all black everything, but the hands would light up if you hit the button on the side. I offered it to him and he gave me A ring that he had on his thumb. I still have the ring and I hope someone special has that watch.

His band was such an influence to me, that I had my son named after him taken from Rev's second name.

It’s been over a decade and he’s still being talked about. That’s how you know you’ve made it

As far as I know he did a majority if not all his tracks in one take. Which is a big part of what made it’ amazing. He kept whatever mistakes he made in the track but somehow those mistakes are what made it so chaotic and amazing.

Does the fact that I watched every video of the Rev you reacted to, multiple times, show that I have a bit of an unhealthy obsession with him? Naaah

Jimmy was such an absolute fucking beast, man, he was such an insane drummer and had a great sense of humour… Still sucks that he left us so early but his legacy still lives on, and happy birthday to Jimmy

The Rev is one of my biggest influences! I was in middle school when Bat Country released and I immediately fell in love with the drumming. His death was the first time a genuinely felt sad about a famous person dying. RIPREV
