So i have been collecting my Metal Dust for a couple years now and decided to melt it all down with very different results to what i thought would happen. I did the mixed Metal Dust into coins as its an unknown Alloy and if i made it into a bar it may fracture while stamping it. I also made all my brass dust into a perfect little mirrored bar and its a very welcome addition to my growing shelves.

That black powder is likely just the oxidized form of the metals, for the most part. Metal dust has a huge amount of surface area, compared to a solid object, so it oxidizes way faster. There are ways to remove oxygen from metals, but I doubt it would be worth it. It might be a better investment to try and prevent the dust from being in contact with air. Maybe keep it in an oil bath? Using dry ice to expel oxygen and keep the dust in CO2? I don't know what could be economically viable.

These videos keep getting better. I love the fact that you leave NOTHING to waste, if possible; recycling, shipping the steel parts to a buddy, and especially collecting the dust off your cleaning and shining efforts. This is a great example to others who may be thinking about starting their own melts.

i remember from metalurgy classes something like mixing charcoal powder in to the crucible reduces amount of oxide leftower and is highly recommend when smelting dust especialy if you keeping dust just under normal atmosphere, it was most likely about silver dust but it makes sens to try on others also

Sorry. But definitely not. Unless it's just a iron pan. Because the Teflon coteing on normal pans when super heated creates a chemical fire that can only be put out by a specialized foam.

@@dakotaadams5376 you mean not unless not teflon coated. While non stick pans have become more common there's still plenty of normal pans with the teflon coating. That being said, I don't think bigstackd hss done a steel melt.

I think it would be cool if he started the meltdown of a car. Doesn’t have to be expensive. Just a car. Like start with body panels. Then the engine or something. Then do anything suspension wise. A suggestion that would be pretty cool.
@Ausogiea

That would be cool, but he'd need a much more sophisticated setup to melt down steel panels! 100% would watch though
