Metal finger pick VS Finger, Kalimba sound different? [칼림바]

I usually trim my nails very short, also trim it very often.
But without nails it's very hard to play kalimba. So I try to find alternative way of play, and this is one of it. Enjoy the test :D

You can use nail hardener. I have short and weak nails too, but I bought nail hardener (extra strong) yesterday. Following the manual (on the little box) in the next two weeks, I let my thumpnails grow a little and make them stronger. It's an option.

You can use your flesh of thumb but it would hurt depends on tines. Also the sound of kalimba would be different. Some people love to play with flesh of thumb because they don't enjoy the sound of nails (like tick! tick! Sound when they hit tines). So it's up to individual preferences! :)

What’s the brand of your Kalimba? I just bought mine with a brand Cega and it looks exactly the same as yours. However I find it really hard to do glissando or swipe finger in the tines because it’s really stiff.
@MrKalimba
@MrKalimba 4 жыл бұрын
It is Sega in the video too. Not bad brand for start. I don't use anymore tho... Does your kalimba tines height are not well arranged? For the cause of difficult glissando technique mostly tines height problems. Which is unevenly arranged, nail is stuck while dragging along.

@MrKalimba
@MrKalimba 2 жыл бұрын
Long nails are okay, short nails are pain. But if nails are too long it would be very difficult to play accurately. I don't know how long your nails are, I found someone who also had long nails, her nails are slightly folded upward. (She had about 1 inch long) Maybe it would have different results depending on how strong the nails are, which is individual matters. If your nails are strong it would be fine I guess. :)

@@MrKalimba thank you for the reply! Currently my nails are about 1.5cm from where it like detaches from the skin (so if I cut my nails really short it would be at 0cm but my nails are at 1.5cm) so I guess it’s not very long but I have not seen any kalimba players with nails as long as mine. Mine are so long that sometimes people are surprised to realise these are my real nails and I don’t have fake nails on. My nails usually get a bit longer than this too before I cut it. Do you think this would be ok to play the kalimba? I already ordered a kalimba a couple days ago and am excited for it to arrive but I’m not sure if I will have to cut my nails first before I can play when it arrives so I want to work that out now.

@@rachelcookie321 I don't know it would work, because I have some kind of obsessed about nail lengths (I always keep my nails short) so I never had that long in my life😅. But I rarely find long nails among the players so it may work okay. Perhaps you can try dodge kalimba tines in your room before you receive Kalimba. Get biggest Bobby hair pins, and hold tightly. Then try pluck the end of pins. Most of Kalimba tines are 4mm wide and 0.90mm thick so that big bobby pins would be nice to find out the result whether you can play the instrument or not. 😁

@MrKalimba
@MrKalimba 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to recommend either wooden or acrylic / solid or hollow. It's depending on little circumstances and preferences. So I'll explain, you choose:D Firstly, Solid body type has very quiet than hollow (I prefer to call sound box type). Kalimba players who practice in late night after work, they mostly goes to Solid type. If you really need quiet sound, choose Acrylic body. Those solid body type has quiet sound but it has much more sustains so some players stick to those types for recording (like me.). Sound box type or Hollow.., whatever it called, has loud sound but it has less sustain than Solid type because whole body is empty inside there are not much mass to hold vibrations than solid. But it has loud volume so it's quite good when you playing daytime or live performance. I also has short nails but I personally uses both flesh and nail. If I need to play little softer, play with flesh. When I need definite sharp sound, play with nails. Any questions are welcome!

@MrKalimba 2 жыл бұрын
You mean the silicone fingertip protectors that includes when you purchase Kalimba?? That's for the string instrument such as guitars, ukuleles, etc etc. That's not a pick. I choose metal picks because it must work as "finger nails". Which is hard material.

I just received mine 2 days ago. This video really helped me a lot as I am planning to purchase picks, since I want to cut my nails for playing piano. Does the glue gun easy to come off/peel off from the metal pick when playing your Kalimba? Will it scratch the tines? Also, is it natural that the last 4 tines on Kalimba doesn’t produce much sound/sustained?
@MrKalimba
@MrKalimba 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, glue gun peel off quite easily. Even the glue will peel off simultaneously after few plays anyway, so you don't have to worry. I also tried with flat rubber band, it works great too. However, the rubber band tear off and make surface unevenly. Maybe I should try silicone caulking gun. Or flex seal liquid rubber.(Still figuring out which way is best for the play and maintain picks easy) For the last 4 tines, which is B5, C6, D6, and E6 on C maj scale is normally not ringing long. Because the tines are physically too short to have enough vibration and produce sound. So that's why many Kalimbas using another scales like G maj, A maj, and B maj. Which is start below C4. Some people want to have even lower. (My customers asked me to make that one) C4 maj scale is so crapshoot, it's too random. I make many kalimbas for my self and customers. I always make same ways, but some of them make good sound even last 4 tines, some of them not. I have no idea why. I found G maj scale is most safest range for the kalimbas. I hope you got little helped from my comment :)

Mr. Kalimba thank you for this suggestions! It definitely helps. I might try G major some other time, most of the Kalimba players I saw, who wrote tabs were mostly in C major key. As I am just starting my Kalimba journey, I still am not sure how to transpose the C major to G major in Kalimba, that’s why it might be harder for me to switch (though I will love the sound of it for sure). Any tips on how to know/identify the keys from C major to G major? (I know G major only have 1 sharp in it -which is F)

@@itsMizaa Here is the scales for tune down to G in kalimba. ( It's from left to right →→→→→ ) A5 → F#5 → D5 →B4 →G4 → E4 → C4 → A3 → G3 →B3 → D4 → F#4 → A4 → C5 → E5 → G5 → B5 Before try this scale, hit the C4 tines as lowest as possible and see how low can that tine be. Some kalimbas are not able to reach G3 due to tine length, also distance between Z bracket and bridges. If your tines can't reach G3 you have to go for A scale which is start from A3. :)

How do you do the "windsheild" wiper method where you can play multiple tines at once with a pick?
@MrKalimba
@MrKalimba 2 жыл бұрын
You mean "Glisando"? It took quite a while to understand the "Windshield Wiper Method" 😄 For the Glisando technique I recommend don't use glue gun or rubber band patch at front tip. They makes huge friction to do that. Metal pick is quite easy to do the Glisando like cutting butters. Just move your thumb naturally to side, and metal pick will do rest of work.

@@stephla3851 I recently moved back to my country and my stuffs are still on the ship.
