Aerosol is more expensive per square foot than a spray gun, but it sure is convenient. As always, thanks for viewing.

Smile! When I made my copper jewellery at 13, some 60 years ago, I used clear nail varnish, and nail polish cleaner. It worked, but probably not as well as modern industrial finishes, no doubt. Your video will at least give me an idea of what to look for in Europe, which may be different from the USA.

Actually, you probably couldn't get a better finish than clear nail polish. Consider washing dishes in strong detergent. If the finish can hold up to that, it will probably last for years as a piece of jewelry.

@@897473 Well, 'me mum liked them!'😊 It was a bit brittle though, and was inclined to chip, when dropped into a jewellery box with other stuff. If it chipped the exposed copper would oxidise, and then the piece looked like it had 'the pox' and was difficult to repair. It would need the whole surface cleaning of varnish, like finger nails, and re-polishing and re-varnishing.

Very nice pieces! Do you use any type of adhesion promoter prior to clear coating?? I've stripped an old tanker desk & concerned clear coat won't hold up on the bare steel

George, I have two things to talk about. If you drop something sharp on your clear enamel protected art, is it going to chip? Will it scratch? You should consider using technique borrowed from oil paintings. They are protected with a damar varnish, which is some form of tree sap. It can last for hundreds of years on paintings. Not sure how well it would stick to oxidized copper or steel. You can try it, maybe it would work fine. And you would like people to look at your pieces well into the future, right?

Thanks for that information. I'll get a can and do some tests on a variety of metal surfaces.

I want to seal a large rusted cast iron container that will hold water for a fountain. Any recommendations? I don’t want gloss finish, prefer a Matt or dead finish. Thanks

Hi, So I am sanding 304 stainless steel to a mirror finish and than etching an emblem on it. I will than paint the etching black and rest will be mirrored finished. Can I spray clear coat over it to prevent rusting and keep mirror finish?
@8974734 жыл бұрын
I have not had success with clear coating a mirror finish. It's rare that I have a mirror finish, so I have not searched out a solution. Hope you find an answer.

Thanks George,, it's true that automotive paint is extremely more durable that store enamel. Like u said,,good thing about aerosols is,,you never open them,so they never get exposed to air. It's opening cans of paint that they get messed up. But mostly latex. Oil seems to hang in better. Thanks for the tips. Take care George,,

Will the vhs clear stick to Raw metel after being hit with the soft wheel. I have some metal spacers I had to build on my truck after hitting with the soft wheel they look kind of cool ,I'd like to clear them like this. Also I have some of those Fox 2.0 off-road shocks on my truck, they may be aluminum. I was going to polish them with mothers if aluminum .. or just clear them with vhs if steel... wondering about adhesion promoters to.

Hi George- I’m currently looking for a durable high gloss finish to apply to an older metal school desk I’ve repurposed. I’ve tried every single product mentioned on here except for the VLR & Mohawks. However, no matter what products I use, I always get the same results....splotchiness. Meaning no matter how many light coats I do, I’m always able to see the tiny spray mark pattern where I’ve applied the topcoat. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong. I’d be willing to try the other two products. But I believe my issues are due to user error. So I have a feeling those will come out the same. Thanks so much in advance; I look forward to your response.

Kristen, it could be the desk. Some finishes are not compatible with other finishes. Try the spray on something else and see if you get the same effect (splotchiness). High humidity will sometimes cause problems. You might also try a heat gun or a hair dryer (blower) which will sometimes smooth the finish out. I’m sure you are shaking the can for a minute or so before spraying. VHT is a durable finish but not sure that it would solve your problem. The Mohawk might help but I’m not sure. If you do try the Mohawk, be sure to wear a respirator. The fumes are POTENT.

Donna, for a pendant I'd use Rusteoleum. clear spray, with crystal clear (gloss) or matte finish. For a bracelet, that is going to get more wear, I'd use VHT spray. Available at AutoZone or online. Why VHT clear: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onnEcmCreKmJqM0
