You should try Metal Gear Ghost Babel on the Gameboy Color. It's an updated MG1/2, but with better controls, better story, and a better save/respawn location

Yeah this game is insanely unfair in a lot of areas and sections, and you only experienced the mild BS it has to offer, it actually gets way worse, trust me you aren't missing out on anything by not forcing yourself through this game. lol

Yeahh I agree, and I enjoy MG1. The NES port is even more unfair and makes less sense than the MSX version
