2:48 The u-turn marketing campaign for MGS2 is actually quite similar to what they did with The Terminator 2. At the time of that movies release in '91, all the posters and trailers made it out to be that the atagonist of the previous movie is the atagonist in this one however in the movie, he is revealed to be the good guy of the movie about 20 minutes into the movie which is shocking to the audience. There is a part of me that loves this sort of stuff and there is an art within being suprised because of the marketing purposefully misleading you. Obviously, I think there is a huge risk with something like that. Loved the video!

100% Kojima did it better imo since subverting expectations was part of the overall game

@@DogmasDomain what kind of mic do you use? Did you buy one just for your new channel?

Great video! I feel a little dumb saying this, but the idea of “You’ve never had an original thought” was such a goosebump inducing idea that just has stuck with me ever since, kind of hard to reconcile at times in my own life whenever I’ve tried to be creative. What would you say is your creative motivation?
@DogmasDomain8 ай бұрын
So, when it comes to the "original though" paradox, it's important to remember as time passes and ideas become more complex, the likelihood of coming up a new idea becomes harder and harder. Combine that with the easy access to information and most of us being distracted, and it makes creativity more difficult. What's my answer to this? Accept it. Coming up with a new idea is difficult, but only you can execute your vision. There are tons of others, and probably better, video essays out there that dive into this and other games I cover is much grander detail, but they can't make what you're envisioning. To answer the first question, honestly, seeing things that cognitively stimulate me from a psychology or gameplay perspective really excite me to the point I'll take with people who don't care about it. Well, instead of talking with people who don't care, why not create a package containing my thoughts and discussing with people? And the rest is pretty much history!

@@DogmasDomain the crazy part is that this game always makes you think and feel something, no matter if you played it like 5 or ten years ago, or like a week ago, something in this game always applies in real life. System control, information control, anything this game has, reflects on something jn real life. And also, it’s kinda scary

The sheer level of polish and attention to detail in this game is unmatched. I played it in 2009 and was blown away, even though I didn’t particularly like Raiden or the story overall. It has been my only real attempt to get into MGS so far. I’m sure I’ll try again someday since the quality of game development stuck out to me.
@DogmasDomain7 ай бұрын
The quality and polish this game has is actually absurd. As the years and have passed and I've revisited this game, I've only appreciated it more and more especially since some modern games don't have the same level of quality as this 2001 game. The story and the characters make sense and, other than MGS4, it might be the worst place to get into series. MGS1 or MGS3 are much better starting points. MGS1 is a great chronological starting point, but MGS3 has the most polished gameplay and is self-contained. I may revisit MGS3 on the channel at some point.

This is a wonderful video and has made me subscribe! MGS2 is a very special game and there's so much to dive into and you did incredibly well and crazy to think you only have a few videos! I love that the game not only warns about information being presented to you in certain lights that is manipulated as half truths and to try to think critically for yourself and not be stuck in the same echo chambers that especially these days with social media is prevelant. It also practices what it preaches by manipulating us at the time thinking we'd play as Snake with all the trailers showing exactly what they wanted us to see but wasn't the full picture at all, it takes balls to do and to do it well as well and to think this was 2001 is nuts. The early PS2 was a crazy innovative time aswell with MGS2, Final Fantasy 10, Silent Hill 2, Max Payne and so many more being so ambitious and breaking boundaries 🙂

Welcome to the channel and happy you enjoyed! This is probably the most difficult script I had to write to cover the crescendo of thematic dissonance, so it's great to hear that I expressed my thoughts well! Discussing this game with people is always a treat because it feels like everyone gets something different out of it, and the nature of the subject matter is uncomfortable. And the way Kojima was able to tie this with the marketing and narrative was sublime. The PS2 was such a magical time with consoles. I'm so happy to have grown up with it.

MGS2 was an incredible piece of media I cherish from my younger years. I really think Hideo Kojima's writing can get pretty self-absorbed and come off like he just likes to hear himself wax poetic about 'concepts' instead of getting to the actual meat and potatoes of stuff, but as a younger person I definitely got the impression Kojima was trying to put real effort into covering topics that were important for people to think about.
@DogmasDomain7 ай бұрын
I agree with this. This game and MGS4 were probably his worst offenders of hearing himself talk. I love how much he explores concepts and how he draws parallels to reality, but this execution definitely could've been tighter. Other games suffer with this or just don't explain enough. I still love this game nonetheless haha. Thanks for watching!

@@DogmasDomain start with IIco then Shadow of the Colossus and finally The Last Gaurdian. Ico can only be played on Ps2 and PS3.
