Metal Gear - STORY OF BIG BOSS

The legendary soldier deserves a video. Tribute to my favorite MGS characters. Big Boss, real name John, also known as Jack, Saladin, Naked Snake, Vic Boss, Ishmael, or simply Snake, was a renowned special forces operative and mercenary commander. He founded U.S. Army Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND, along with the mercenary company Militaires Sans Frontières, and was one of the founding members of the Patriots. Big Boss later established the military states of Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land as bases for his companies, in order to realize his ambitions of creating a nation for soldiers.
During the Cold War, Big Boss was an apprentice to The Boss, the so-called "Mother of Special Forces," and later served as a black ops field agent for the CIA's FOX Unit, under Major Zero.
Having his genetic code used as part of the government project Les Enfants Terribles, Big Boss was the genetic father of Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake. He was also the mental and physical template for his body double and former subordinate, Venom Snake, with whom he shared the title of "Big Boss."

Venom was pretty similar to Big Boss actually in that he also wanted men united in war and he was conditioned to do so by Ocelot and Miller. Venom never had a choice to figure out what he wanted so he just went with revenge against Cipher and building up an army, because that's all he's ever been told. I don't even think he cared about the Boss's will at that point.

Super Super Hero Old Snake said "We tore the world apart...made your life a living hell." So painfully accurate not just for Raiden but everyone affected by the big bosses influence. After playing it all and learning the truth, I've sadly come to hate Big Boss what they did to him and The Boss was awful in operation Snake Eater, but that was no excuse for throwing the world away. And having his sons/brothers come to the terrible fates of war...was it really worth it all? Couldn't we honor our comrades in saving the world rather than join in on pouring more oil to the flames? Isn't it better to have one man hurt than the world? He...didn't come to that realization...and look at all that was lost still makes me tear up thinking about it all...luckily our beloved Snake came to that realization but Big Boss's legacy to me will always be tainted and in my opinion he tainted the sacrifice of The Boss as well....the world would be better without snakes. :'[

Big Boss' journey is basically the dark reflection to Solid Snake's one: Both are legendary soldiers who attained greatest prowess in the battlefield, feeling that the battlefield was their home, forged great friendships and their lives were fraught with tragedy. But Solid Snake refused to let the pain of his tragedies consume him, thus moving forward and still fight for what it was right, whilst Big Boss let his pain drive him insane to the point of becoming the very thing he hated. Even Big Boss himself lampshades it, saying that if Snake was in his place, he wouldn't commit the same mistakes he himself did. Big Boss is what Solid Snake could have become if he let the pain and grief he felt consume him.

I know most of you dont care but please let me explain to you how I see this. Solid Snake in Metal Gear 1 was based around clichés in movies. It was cool to have a bandana ect. The evidence for this is that Kojima was a heavy film enthusiast and loved everything about films. Big Boss (Venom Snake) in Metal Gear 1 was a generic throwaway villain even in his name "Big" Boss trying to state he was the ultimate boss to the game. As Kojima became more professional with his writing he realised what a masterpiece of a story he had created with Big Boss but couldn't finish it or even have it to his standards due to the circumstances under Konami. My main point is: Metal Gear Solid is a franchise that was influenced by what was cool back then until it hit a point where Kojima had changed his ways. Also adding to this is say if non of this was true, The title of "hero" for Solid Snake was made for him. Do you seriously think Big Boss would die to the hand of Solid Snake? Have you even played Ground Zeros? Venom and Big Boss died in order to make Solid Snake the hero he HAD to be as he was Big Bosses clone and had to live up to the expectations of that.

Raiden even broke the rules of his own country to prevent orphan children used to be war orphan, and now he fights for what he believe in just like Big Boss and Solid Snake. In other word, Solid Snake has succeeded to pass the soldier generation to Raiden just like Big Boss did to Solid Snake

Kevin Varela well, story-wise, it's been told that Kojima didn't really wrote the story much, or even had a part in it. Ergo, the MGS fanbase considers this game as semi-canon. While there is some canon aspects to the story, there were some noted plotholes as well. not sure about the gameplay though. might want to check it out later.

This is gonna be a long one FYI lmao I know Big Boss seems to be regretful at the end of the game, and a lot of people still see him as a failed hero, but I think he lived up to his name. His life mirrored The Boss' in the end- a legendary soldier who teaches someone all they know, only to become the supposed villain. But this process of defection is always a ruse- they're like enlightened heroes who are always working towards a greater good. Both the Boss and Big Boss were killed by their students, who were chosen as the ones to carry on their will and ultimately be branded a criminal (even Solid Snake- once Shadow Moses is over and especially once him and Otacon start Philanthropy). Both of them didn't know anything but war, and forged deep connections with other soldiers regardless of philosophy of identity, and eventually became a hero to people who lived and died in the battlefield. Both of them accepted their fate to sacrifice themselves without thanks in order to keep the will towards peace alive in the next generation- and ultimately through Big Boss, Ocelot (the Boss' literal child), and Solid they finally dismantle the only enemy they felt they could fight, which was essentially Zero and the world superpowers' domination on consciousness. Metal Gear almost never truly vilifies anyone- most of the time, the people and bosses you end up having to kill are the same as you: a traumatized child soldier-turned pseudo-terrorist being manipulated by a greater force, a charismatic leader. It's never about good guys and bad guys, it's about trying to end the cycle of violence and domination, the nitty gritty. I will force myself to stop here. Oh also, great video.
