Arise is one of those "desert island" albums for me. I like every single second. Just flawless.

Brazilian here: Actually, I've born 2 years after prior the release of this amazing record. For me, this album is one of the reasons I'm pround of being brazilian. I just remember listening to it in my teens, it just blew my mind at the time. It was actually, my frist contact ever with extreme metal per see. There are actually a lot of interesting facts about the time it was released. Here in São Paulo, where I live, they had played live in a free concert for something like 40K people in open air, but it became a disaster since some neo-nazi fuck had stabbed and killed a guy from audience and band had to finish set'-list in hald that night. They had their first biggest crowd in their carrer when they played in the second edition of Rock In Rio festival (a very famous music festival here in Brazil) for only 30 minutes. It was just January of 1991 of that year, they didn't even had actually released the record and they were playing for more than 100K people. They had released a Rough Mixes version of the record for the Rock In Rio festival, it was a limited press only for the festival, if I'm not wrong.

My wife is brazilian, when we met I mentioned I liked brasilian music and played her this🤣. She is into pop/samba music so she hated it. I met one of her uncles later though he loved arise too which was cool. Cant wait to play this to my kids when they get more into music later.

Well that was a quick 30 years. Such a monumental album to me. I was into Metallica and Pantera at the time, and just discovered Fear Factory around 1995. We had a community access TV channel at the time that started showing metal videos. I got poor reception of the channel but when I saw Arise kick into gear with the martyr and gas masks, amonst the snowy reception, my jaw hit the floor. That was the angriest metal at that point in my metal journey for me, and I play it frequently still today.

Arise was my gateway to extreme metal. That album lead the way to a so far 30 year expensive addiction to purchasing albums from heavy bands. The early 90s were a great time to be alive and be a metalhead.

The story behind beneath the remains is fascinating. The band put their early releases in a very harsh time for brazil (The end of a really violent dictatorship) and the hardcore punk and metal scene there was a mirror from that time. Really great record

Holy cow, 30 years!?! I love all of Sepultura's albums and I can definitely see why Arise stood out for you. For me, Roots was their stand out album because it was such a different sound, something I'd not heard before and that made it stand out from the pack. They are all fantastic musicians.

Probably my favorite Sepultura album with Beneath The Remains in really close second. I think Subtraction is kinda underrated and it’s one of my favorites on the album. Murder is another favorite of mine too along with Dead Embryonic Cells and others. Thanks for doing this video man.

Easily one of the best albums metal has to offer. I feel like this album was a really good gateway into extreme metal for a lot of people (myself including) because it’s not quite as punishing as death metal but still much heavier than most thrash at the time. Add on top of that some of the catchiest songwriting in metal and it’s a fucking masterpiece. Also just a side note but probably one of the greatest metal album covers of all time as well.

Back when I was getting into metal in High School Sepultura was one of my favorite bands. The rhythm guitar and the drumming just really did it for me in a way very few other bands did. My favorite album of theirs has always been Chaos A.D., which I've always thought of as their "definitive" album but Arise is also very high up there.

Love this album, I do prefer Chaos AD but that Arise riff might be their best. I think you're wrong about Roots, but I sort of get why people don't dig it. It's much weaker than the previous two but some of the riffs are undeniable and I love all the tribal elements. Nailbomb is great too.

Yep, you are right- I'm in Sepultura 'Roots'. This was my first album of them and I still think it's the best. Do you know this effect (or however it could be called)? The first album of a band you heard (not the first of the artists) is the your favourite one. So 'Roots' was my first. Another 30th years anniversary this year: COIL 'Love's Secret Domain' Totally something else but that album still blows my mind today.

@@dariofernando5572 I dunno. Chaos AD was a BIG stylistic change from Arise, much like the Black Album was compared to And Justice For All. Roots is more like Load/Reload if I had to extend the Metallica comparison, or Megadeth's Youthanasia.

I remember listening to Schizophrenia once but can't really remember any of it. Shout out from Belo Horizonte!! Yeah our PM (Policia Militar - Military Police) is racist af and corrupt, also Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte’s State) is pretty conservative in general, but there’s also great music and resistance culture, specially with hip hop and street art (brazilian’s annual National Rap Battle finals is hosted at Santa Tereza’s viaduct - Belo Horizonte). Anyways it’s in many senses a kind of fucked up place to live but at least it’s not Rio de Janeiro hahhah jk. There are a lot of anarchists here in BH too - if you or anyone is interested, check the collective Kasa Invisivel (don’t know if there’s info in english though, you’ll have to check that). Bye!!

Great choice, but is it REALLY that old?! Yikes! 'Arise' was an early introduction into the more extreme side of metal for me; it bridged thrash and death really well, which worked for me as a thrash kid at the time. The artwork really captivated me; spent a lot of time in Study Hall trying to emulate that style in the back of my math notebooks :) The video for 'Dead Embryonic Cells' was a highlight on Headbangers Ball for months when it came out. I agree about 'Roots'; it may have done more to get the band exposed to a wider audience but it didn't interest me.
