I felt this reaction. And I am someone who survived a very similar situation so Violets tale kills me every time. Ren actually looks very much like my abuser and his expressions in Violets tale actually terrify me on an entirely different level. At the same time, for reasons I don’t understand, it’s healing in a way to see him in this way and know he is doing it to bring light to the horrible shit that goes on in this world. I feel like I can actually release the raw emotions from my past. I love everything he does and I’m definitely a fan for life. Thank you for this and for being vulnerable.

Here's the origin story of this trilogy 🤩😁🤯 This wasn't originally a trilogy story. Ren read a small article about a 14 yr old boy killing a young prostitute with a knife in an attempted robbery. Knife crime had been skyrocketing in London at this time. Later that same evening the boy had been shot and killed by the police responding to a possible suspect for a girl found murdered in Sussex Gardens in Paddington - one of the capital's most notorious red light districts. It disturbed him, so he set out to write a commentary not just on senseless violence, but on how desensitized we've become to it. The words he ends both Jenny and Screech's Tales with is "It's such a Shame" we say these words all to often and just move on without a second thought. The the lead inspector was quoted saying " So Young, It's such a shame". Violets Tale was written over 2 years later adding another layer of commentary by Ren. He wanted us to consider not only generational violence but to make us look at all angles of society that we turn a blind eye to. Both characters are born out of violence on that cruel night of Violets beating and then both killed with brutal violence in the same night 14yrs later. Also, his lyrics have even more meaning when you read in between the lines. For example he doesn't say what Jenny was doing or why she wanted to escape from this place & life, or why Screech thought she was older saying at Patrick's door "I left this lady lying on the floor". Could that be because the way she's dressed & her heavy makeup? Also why was a 14yr old girl out so late in the dead of night walking alone in a sketchy area, wearing high heeled shoes, down a streeet that "she's walked it a thousand times before"? Everything points to Jenny being an underage prostitute, showing us what Ren writes has reason & is made to make us think. There's no fat on the bone, every word is weighed & has meaning. Also, how can both these siblings be so cursed? Both are born out of violence on that cruel night of Violets beating and then both killed with brutal violence in the same night 14yrs later. Interesting how Jenny has the same traits as her mother Violet, quiet, voiceless, and timid. Whereas Screech mirrors his father Stevie in every way, Loud, obnoxious, and easily prone & provoked into violence. They didn't know one another and had never met their biological parents. What made these kids so much like their parents? Was it simply Nature, inherited traits due to their genetic make-up OR Nurture, being brought up in the broken governmental system filled with, mistreated & in many cases, abused children, shuffled from one foster home to another ? He organically takes us on this journey, leaving us to think shouldn't we be doing better in this so called "advanced, wealthy, 1st world society. I'm loving your reactions. Cheers 🥂.

Considering Ren’s very considered use of language, innuendo and suggestion, we know Violet’s father abused her and she was in a welfare scheme for special support after leaving home young. We know she’s pregnant. Stevie calls her a slut and a liar. I think Violet’s father is the baby daddy.

They inherited the traits from their parents true, Jenny mirroring her mother and Screech his father, but there's more too. Violet's mother was likely also abused and using alcohol as a tool of disassociation. A symptom of CSA is that "freeze/fawn" response that both Violet and Jenny seem to use, and obviously if Jenny is 14 then she has experienced CSA as a minor and SW. Screech mirrors his father's behavior, as well as his grandfathers. And considering he was raised in the system, he's likely also learned a lot of violence and rebellion being raised in the foster/group homes. It's incredibly in depth and magical when you think of all the complexities.

@@allymorrison9936I also theorize that Violet knew she was pregnant when she got with Stevie, which why he calls her a liar and slut - he found out she was pregnant before they met. Which means Jenny and Screechs dad would be their grandfather, who was SAing Violet. I also think the line where Violet ducks to misdirect Stevies blow is because he was trying to punch her stomach but she caught it in the throat instead to protect her baby.

I think we are ready for new generation of musical story tellers. David Bowie, Tina Turner,David Crosby, Glenn Fry on and on have passed. And, Ren is so tremendously gifted can do this on his terms. If you want to amp up the intensity another notch: Money Game Part 1 If you want to cry: How To Be Me (live) If you need a break from all the heavy stuff: His band, The Big Push, has some great stuff. Their cover of the Manu Chao song "Bongo Bong" is chill. Want to feel like you're at the greatest party ever: The Big Push "I Shot The Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop". The one with Ren in the red suspenders. If you want to see some insane rapping skills: The Hunger That's probably enough to get you started.

If you aren't shattered after Violets tale your not much of a human being . Ren starts conversations, this conversation about generational trauma has reverberated around the internet . Its a subject worth talking about. Rens amazing portrayal brings the true horror of the reality of domestic violence on one person and subsequent generations. As a woman who has experienced this it has been wonderfully reaffirming to see men such as yourself react to this with horror and sadness . Ren has started many conversations on the internet D.V., S.A. , su*cide ,generational trauma . The world needs people who hold a mirror up to it even if sometimes the picture we see is not flattering. Thank you for your reaction Its nice to know there are men who are not insensitive to violence .

The Tales are tough to listen to, especially Violet's Tale. All the more so when you have seen or experienced it first hand. As you said, Ren pulls you into it with just his voice and guitar, and you can picture each scene and character. My heart goes out to you. Ren wrote the first two in 2019 after reading a news story about a young prostitute killed in the streets, with the 14-year-old killer found and shot by the police that night. One of the police officers was quited as saying it was "such a shame." Ren wrote them as a commentary on street violence and how numb we are to it. Violet's Tale was written later as a way to show how young kids like Jenny and Screech may have ended up in the streets so young, and the effect of generational domestic violence. You may have missed the final twist in the last two lines because the story was hitting you so hard. Violet was the mother of Jenny and Screech. They were twins born "aligned side by side" on a night of violence and died side by side "one street apart" in a chance encounter, with Screech killing the sister he never knew. It's a tragic and beautifully told story rooted in a real life event.
@wwdudley
@wwdudley Жыл бұрын
As a follow-up, there are brilliant hints and details woven in that aren't immediately obvious. Why wasn't his friend Patrick home to let him in at the same time his girlfriend was "busy" so he couldn't come over? Jenny and Screech had traits mirroring their parents - Jenny is silent like Violet, and Screech violent like Stevie. Is it nature or nurture?

First came to this channel for the "hi Ren" reaction and subbed for the honest and thoughtful mind behind the reactions. No fake tears or gaudy gasps for dramatic whatever. You FELT this. Ren does that. There are a few (very few, but there are one or two) reactors that, I've discovered, only jumped into Ren's music to ride the coattails of the "gravy train"... I've even seen him open the eyes of a few of these people and turned them to his side. The pain in YOUR eyes can't be faked. Not truly. This set of songs, especially Violet, is INCREDIBLY hard to watch for those of us in this world who have seen it or its results firsthand. So many artists paint around the ugliness and the pain and try to "clean it up" before presenting it like a Disney fairy tale to "raise awareness and hope." Ren doesn't pretty it up. Ren rubs our faces in the pain and brutality. To spread awareness, yes. But i think it's also a warning. He's screaming out "see this?! Stop walking past and fLlcking do something!" That's what this feels like to me. He's crying out for a better world and for people to just be better. "Raising awareness and hope" with pretty songs and fundraisers are all well and good and have their place.... but we need to raise the sense of injustice at the cruelty, the ire at the bullies and abusers and raise our fists up high and actually make a difference. Jesus... I'm afraid I just wrote a novel lol. Sorry...I get all wordy when I'm in my feels lol. Take care of you. This was a heavy, emotionally-draining bardic masterpiece that takes some time to digest and recover from. Please take your time. I was a sobbing mess for quite some time and even remembered a few things I'd preferred to have stayed buried. But, sometimes, that's what healing can do. Sorry this was so long. Have a blessed day! And for a lighter "Ren" take, try children of the moon, power, or Fisher rap (retake)... For more really good heart hurting stuff, how to be me, (live), Chalk Outlines (live,) both with Chinchilla. And for a REAL hard one, Crutch ft Bibi (this one was at the height of his discovering and fighting his illness, mental health issues from the meds for his misdiagnosis, his own depression/ anxiety, his own body AND the health system. And I'm still writing a novella here lol I'm going, promise. And if anyone actually read all of this, I truly hope you have a blessed, beautiful week!!❤

Thank you. It's so hard to find anything that feels remotely like justice. It's terrifying for the victim(s) and witnesses to stand up to them and face them, and so many victims are silenced by their very real fear. I've been there firsthand (the beating scene is like being there again 😥) and I've seen it happen to others as an adult, both before and after my own abuse. Their abusers also threatened my life many times because of my relationship to their victims. The only one I'm currently concerned about was just granted a hearing for federal resentencing. 😬 😩 If his recently issued sentence is overturned, his state charges and sentences will also go away. He'll be out, and he still knows where I live. I don't want to go back to being on guard and hyper alert every day. 😩 After 10 yrs of hiding and watching our backs, we had finally found a sense of normalcy and relative safety. But I know our situation is not unique. It's an enormous problem, especially here in the US. Again, thank you for helping victims and survivors. I'm glad you made it out and try to turn your experience into a drive to make things better, safer, and more just. ❤

However, the last video tied the story all together because Violet was Jenny and Screech's mum.... probably separated at birth and put into the system. Grew up not knowing each other and only met on that fateful night. This trilogy shows how abuse can go full circle through the generations. Only the first two songs are based loosely on a true story. If you want something more fun and upbeat then check out Losing It. Much love from the UK!

I admire you for putting it out like that and am very sorry that you had to go through that. It must have been horrible to see. So big respect. Other than that only Jenny's Tale is somewhat based on a true story as far as I know. Ren saw an article about a child prostitute stabbed to death in London and was..."inspired" by it for lack of a better word. Oh yeah, the 14 year old orphan girl "walking the streets" in high heels late at night, having done so thousands of times before and wanting to escape from that life is about that by the way. The art piece shows many tragedies and failings in society and family.

But so was the story of the boy who robbed her at knifepoint, probably killed her, and was shot by police later that night. Ren apparently read that and was so revolted and couldn't get it out of his mind, the waste of life. Obviously, they were not secret fraternal twins, as Violet's Tale came months later and was the closure Ren needed to tell his story of generational violence, but both of the two kids getting killed needlessly was genuinely true, to my knowledge.

These are very hard stories but the topics are so prevalent in the world today and because it's sad and uncomfortable to talk about and some people feel ashamed and like there's a stigma about the cycle, so many people won't talk about it, won't acknowledge it, turn a blind eye, etc. It's definitely stuff that needs to be talked about in order for it to be something that can one day be eradicated or at least there is enough conversations and education and treatment and people to stand up for those that can't or won't stand up for themselves. I come from a cycle of abuse and always said I wouldn't end up in an abusive relationship and didn't admit to myself or anyone else that I spent 6 years in one. I am educated, I have a degree in Addiction Counseling and had to take a class about abuse and the cycle of abuse and I still couldn't bring myself to face it. And there's no way my neighbors didn't hear what was going on and not once did they check if I was ok or call the police or anything. They just ignored it. So many times people ignore it or think the next person will help, but if everyone is waiting for the next person to help then no one ever helps. I feel Ren put it in such a tragically beautiful song that made the impact of the words that much greater too

My neighbors knew but were afraid to get involved, bc of proximity and their friendship with us both. Someone did call once. I didn't find out for many months that it was a young woman down the street whom I'd never met. Her little girl told me one day. Those few people who call for help or pass you a slip of paper with the DV hotline on it are heroes to me.

My heart is with you. Violet's Tale is written so astoundingly that you know it is a "true" story even though those exact events didn't happen. I don't think there is any way he could have written that song without knowing people on both sides of the story (abuser and abused). The pinching of the eyelids and the pounding of the chest ("Do you think I want to do this Violet?") hit me especially hard. The first time I watched it, I didn't see why someone would write something so astoundingly sad, but I think I figured it out. In making the characters so incredibly real, the audience becomes emotionally invested. This investment makes it much harder for us to see any kind of abuse in our real worlds and not be moved to do something about it. It is a lot harder to just say, "It's such a shame," and move on with our lives. We are motivated to try to find a way to end this cycle of generational violence - to make the system better than it is. I'm sorry this one hit so, so close to home. I hope you are able to find peace as you process this. Along with everyone else, I recommend listening to some of Ren's lighter fare to give yourself a break from the heavy.

I love this trilogy because it is pure art, nothing more, nothing less. The way you can envision every single detail Ren plays, sings, raps and speaks is immeasurable compared to anything I have ever heard. As you said at the beginning, this needs to exist. It is a masterpiece of work and Ren should go down in history as one of the best to ever write a song.

I love how thoughtful you are as a reactor. It's refreshing watching someone tune in and appreciate Ren's talent while still being able to digest the content. Not all reactors have that ability. I'm sorry this brought up trauma for you - I think it does for many given the prominence of domestic violence. Violet's Tale had my stomach churning too. As many have already, I encourage you to move on to something lighter in his catalogue. For some rap maybe Power, What You Want, Losing It, or The Hunger. For some singing and guitar riffs definitely check out The Big Push. My favorite is the I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop mash up but you really can't go wrong with any of their music.

Casey thank you for a genuinely heartfelt reaction video. The world needs more good men like you ❤ Men openly showing horror at the brutality inflicted by violent misogynists, isn't common. More often its ignored. Ren putting this in the public sphere gives all if us the opportunity to say 'no more', we can do better. The more good men we have calling out the bad ones, the better life will be for everyone 🙏

Art and music so powerful it can change the trajectory of the lives that hear it. Ren had to go to a very dark place for a long time in order to bring all of this back with him. He is a wounded-warrior/shaman archetype certainly, but he is also so accessible and down to earth. We all love him. Thank you for sharing the journey with all of us.

Loved your respect and recognition for Ren " Master of One Takes, I guess " , unquestionably true. I would suggest "Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla LIVE" ( must be Live ) and "How to be Me" also LIVE they are both masterclasses in emotions. However if you wish to have a fun track " Bongo Bong " by The Big Push the band Ren was in until the end of last year, and then one of any of the other 200 videos He/They have....and by the way " Fingers Live for Hunger TV with Chinchilla is OFF THE SCALE vocal wise.

I've watched so many reactions to Ren & his songs. This one took my breath & sent me into myself. It's interesting to watch the various reactions to this trilogy as it actually shows that most men DO NOT feel "great" going through & feeling the violence. This trilogy was very close to home for me. I am "jenny" but I've been able to change cycle. As a single parent my children are my life & are thriving. I absolutely understand its because I was fortunate to be fostered by amazing parents who have stuck with me, guided me & instilled straight values in me. I feel very lucky that they didn't give up on me. Reactions like yours help us to know that not all men think its OK to be like the dad who did me wrong or the next men who did think it was OK. I love that Ren has been able to bring DV & the "history repeating itself" into the whelms of thought and conversation. Just like mental illness and misdiagnosis, DV should be something that can be openly talked about.

You need a break after that one. It hits everyone this song, but it hits harder when you can put a face on Violet, I am so very sorry. Might I suggest the NEXT song you listen to by REN is “Humble”? You mentioned he has a good singing voice this is a song that show cases that, and the lyrics are profoundly positive. It's not a song. It's performance art at its finest. He is the best I've ever experienced. He weaves a tale using poetry, song, story narration, sound effects, acting to name a few of the tools in his toolbox. Every single moment was perfectly planned so each time he wants an emotion from the viewer, he gives them (us) no choice. He is a true artist and genius.

I’m not sure Ren ever stops blowing your mind no matter how far down the rabbit hole you get. He is always full of surprises and is only getting better. This trilogy of tales is definitely something else. Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery that it pulls you in and forces you to keep listening - even when it gets physically uncomfortable. Ren just demands attention. And he uses his gift to shed light on the dark matters that are far too real for some. Hope to see you deep down the Ren rabbit hole with the rest of us. I recommend checking out one of my a personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It is very different from everything else he has done. He wrote it after several emergency trips to the hospital and a breakdown before he finally got the correct diagnosis. It is heart wrenching and absolutely stunning.

This is such an immersive, intense experience. Astonishing performance, in so many different a surprising ways. It does ren...der one speechless at times. Harsh reality juxtaposed with that beautiful guitar and his choirboy voice. Wow. You were clearly moved by it. Not an easy listen, but based on a true story. I did know of a woman, a friend of my mothers, who's kids she gave birth to as an abused teen, were actually her brother and sister. I won't say anymore. It happens. Brutal, but it does. Rens music is myriad of moods, some more upbeat ones too.

The new songs are great, but quite different from his older stuff. I found this man about 4 months ago and can't quit listening and watching Ren reactions. There seem's to be something about the story telling being done this way and our own imagination filling in the gaps that causes it to be felt far deeper than watching it a fully acted out with individual characters playing their own part's. The only thing I can think is were building up new neural connection in our minds because were using out imagination far more which makes the emotions felt from it far more real and more deeply felt. As far as I know the story about a 14 year old boy robbing a girl and stabbing her is true. The news story ended with "such a shame" and that stuck in Ren's head. from that he wrote The Tale of Jenny and Screech and a few years later he wrote Violets Tale as a way to bring the story together and give it that bit extra to make it hit home. Reactors all react differently. You've got a new sub from me for your honest heart felt reaction. Maybe try something lighter from him next. What You Want is one he's just having a laugh with, lot's of other's suggested in other replies.
