Excellent video! Highly informative. I have a few boat trailer projects coming up that are both painted and galvanized. Your tips are definitely going to come in handy. Thank you!

So I have a Galvanized Boat trailer that I have already cleaned and strip the rust off of. Is my best bet To get some Zinc Gal coating to fill in the scratches and some other minor holes. Then spray the Etch primer over that. And then get a acrylic based topcoat?
@acgolem Жыл бұрын
If you're going with an acrylic top coat you could probably skip the etch primer. If you were using an enamel or epoxy enamel top coat then you'd want to etch primer first as the enamel will react with the zinc. I've done my boat trailer with zinc and then acrylic. I'll admit it doesn't look as nice as an enamel but it has far superior weather resistance and if I need to touch it up in the future I can just wash it and slap some more paint over it.

@@acgolemso I can just use the Zinc coating essentially for any of the rust spots and scratches and then just paint using acrylic spray?
@acgolem Жыл бұрын
Acrylic water based, yes. You can spray it if you have a sprayer. Acrylic spray cans, no. At least every one that I've seen has said they're not suitable over galvanized or zinc coatings.

@@acgolem so what’s the proper way I should go about this then, using spray paint cans. Or I could get some liquid if needed.

There are multiple methods that will work just as well as each other. All with some benefits and some negatives. On my boat trailer I used cold galv primer on any bare metal where I had ground away rust. I then top coated the whole thing with a water based top coat. I brushed it. Its held up well 2 years running so far. The benefits of this are UV resistance and water based can be recoated without major prep. No sanding or undercoating required. Just wash and slap another coat on in a few years. www.bunnings.co.nz/white-knight-rust-guard-500ml-white-satin-quick-dry-advanced-enamel-paint_p1560446 If you look too closely it's not the best finish as water based is thick and dries quickly. Has brush marks etc. The benefit of brushing is there was no overspray in my garage. Spray cans do give a nicer finish. They should last fine. If you go the spray can method I'd use cold galv on the bare metal. Etch primer over the cold galv then topcoat the whole trailer. You could even use a silver galv. It's a galv paint and a top coat all in one. Instead of using 3 different cans you just do a couple coats with the one. I've heard mixed reviews on these. Some people swear by it and some don't. The rust protection ratings aren't as high as cold galv but it's still 60 where cold galv is 72. I will try some of these products in the near future. www.bunnings.co.nz/crc-400ml-bright-zinc-rust-protection_p0049610

Question: Can Zinc Gal Be Used On a Shipping Container Home Interior & Exterior ??? Thanks For The Awesome Review. ✌️🖖
@acgolem Жыл бұрын
Yes. It should be over coated tho. It is usually a Flat finish and doesn't have great weather resistance. It either has to be over coated with an acrylic (water based) paint or you need to use an etch primer before using other top coats such as epoxies or enamels.

I am in Florida, USA and building a square drop camp trailer on a galvanized boat trailer, I want to protect the steel before building the camper, I have never painted galvanized steel before, I watched the video and it seems like the etching compound before an acrylic or water based primer and paint is the way to go. Thanks for the tip.

2 primers is probably Overkill. You could use etch or acrylic primer directly on galv. If you've never worked with etch primer, well it has it's challenges. It stinks, it dries extremely quickly and is hard to spread, wrecks brushes etc which is why I prefer spraying it. If I were in your situation I would either do acrylic primer with an acrylic top coat or an etch primer and an epoxy or alkyd (thinner clean up) top coat. The thinner clean up paints have more gloss, level off better, are harder wearing. Their downfall is they fade in the sun (5-7 years). Acrylic top coats are easier to work with, have better weather resistance etc, they just aren't as glossy, aren't as hard and don't finish as nice with a brush. I did my apprenticeship and painted for 5 years in NZ. We predominantly used acrylic systems. I then did 5 years in australia and we predominantly did thinner based systems (but acrylics were slowly creeping in). I'm back in NZ now and do my own work. I probably lean more towards acrylics but if aesthetics are key I'd go etch primer with a single pot epoxy top coat. Something like this. www.whiteknightpaints.co.nz/products/metal/white-knight-rust-guard/topcoat/white-knight-rust-guard-epoxy-enamel/

Can i spray rustolium professional cold galvanizing spray over a previously hot galvanized anchor?

Technically yes. I've not had great success with cold galv sprays adhering but it is going to do it any harm

how would you recommend to prep car body surface for painting? the body panels are galvanized. do i remove the zinc and start with bare metal or do i just prime the galvanized metal?
@acgolem2 жыл бұрын
Definitely keep the galvanizing. Truth be told I'm a qualified commercial and residential painter with years of industrial experience. I'm unfortunately not an automotive painter. I'm sure I could paint a car well and it'd look acceptable, but I'm not entirely sure about the common or correct ways to go about it. I would think etch primer is still a must on the galvanized panels but I'm not sure if it's compatible with automotive topcoats. I would think it'll be fine but no guarantees. Maybe there is a 2k primer suitable for galvanized that's compatible with automotive topcoats. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Great video thanks. What primer would you use for small spot repairs on a painted aluminium boat (like the paint chips in the background on your boat at 8:18)?! I need to spot paint some chips/filiform corrosion spots (that I'm sanding back to bare metal) on my aluminium boat (Stacer Outlaw). Most are small, around 1-2cm sq. Tossing up between epoxy (as gives better seal against moisture for marine use, but pain to use as comes in 2-part/have to mix, can only find in large volume cans) or etch primer (easier as comes in spray can, but less/no moisture resistance and have read that etch may eat into/lift the surrounding paint if it gets on it). Any tips would be welcome as I can't find a clear answer elsewhere!
@acgolem3 жыл бұрын
Epoxy is a hard and durable paint that is waterproof. Unfortunately it doesn't adhere well directly on aluminium. You will need to use an etch primer. It does come in a tin so you can brush it on spots. If you want to spray it on certain spots, just cut a small hole in a rag and place it over the patch (essentially masking) so the spray only hits your patch and not the pain around it. You should overcoat the primer. You often can buy 2 part jelcoat tins. Around 100ml. Here in New Zealand a hardware store (Bunnings) has them, most marine shops should too. On saying that I often use single part epoxy enamel spray cans on trailer boat hulls. Although they're not designed to be permanently submerged in water, I'm yet to have it fail on me.

Hey man great tips - Do you know of a etch primer with epoxy enamel solutions.. like a 2 in 1 purely to safe on time. Ideally in a spray can.. Also its for indoor furniture so it doesnt need to be fully protective i.e weather UV guard etc.

doesnt look like youve got the default cap on the etch primer.. what cap are you using?

I think that was the original cap. It may have been a cap off a Rust-Oleum can. I do like the standard Rust-Oleum spray.

Hi can I paint acrylic straight on top of this edge primer??
@acgolem3 жыл бұрын
I'm goin to say yes. I've always done it and never had an issue. Every brand I've used has said to top coat with your favourite (their) top coat. I read online that some (namely Rust-Oleum) suggest a regular primer on top of their etch primer. I've always overcoated etch primer directly with whatever topcoat I'm using and I've never had them fail prematurely. I've never used Rust-Oleum tho. I've used basically every paint from acrylic latex house paints, acrylic lacquer car paints and a lot of 2 pot paints. This is why etch primer is now my go to. It sticks to anything and seemingly anything sticks to it.

@@acgolem what I might do is put a acrylic primer on top of the edge and then colour
