Great Job -- I have been searching my brain for awhile to see how I could install metal roofing on our shed. While we had help to do a garage in past it coordination of help is so dependant on weather and everyone's work schedules. My wife and I are both over 60 but still able to work on the roof. Thanks alot.

One other thing, not about the vid, but about the roofing. If you are considering a metal roof, go with lightest color you can find. The amount of heat reflection can NOT be ignored. I do NOT have central AC. My Summer cooling is windows and fans for cross ventilation. On 100° days, I have went from fans at 6:00pm 'til dawn to fans from midnight to dawn with nothing other than going from dark tan 3-tab to a light yellow/beige metal. I was amazed at the difference.

I'm going to have to do this as my 20yr old roof is starting to leak. There are very high winds in my area and they have literally ripped up some of the shingles on several occasions. I'm hoping the metal will be more durable. Think I'll get a little more help though, climbing up and down a ladder for every piece is a bit much for me and my cane! LOL

To you DIYers.Use a quality underlayment like RINO or TITANIUM.Use ICE n WATER SHIELD along the eaves and around pipes,chimney etc.
@georgedennison33385 жыл бұрын
I discovered a new 'hybrid' underlayment call Safeguard-30. It is more like fabric than tar paper/felt. Think of everything that's a PITA about felt, and imagine not having to deal with any of it; THAT is what it,s like to use Safeguard-30. PLUS, they guarantee you can walk on a WET 12:12 slope covered with Safeguard-30 and not slip. I have used it on a 6:12, and it has amazing traction.

Ice and water is junk over shingles. Doesn't seal to anything. Product warranty is void anyways. If roofed correctly no need for it under metal on a straight roof. In valleys yes, but other then that you dont need it.

so what happens with all that bio mass from the old broken down asphalt shingles starts to grow moss and green goop under the water tight super hot metal roof surface? Gunk, mold, condensation, rot, ugh eventually that would work its way into the house, even if the metal roof stays perfectly water tight. Don't be lazy. Take the old roof off first. Have a look at the plywood underneath. Repair if necessary Then install a bitumen water and vapor barrier. THEN install this lovely green metal roof.

@michaelmayo14285 жыл бұрын
Its standing seam no screws required on the surface. One side interlocks (snaps together) and a bracket is put on the leading edge and it screws to roof. Video shows him doing them. Then next panel covers the brackets so you don't see them. Wow you do metal and didn't know proper install
@freethrottle63927 жыл бұрын
what did you use as a membrane between the metal and the old shingles?
@barryginter72607 жыл бұрын
Ice and shield first 3 feet and up the sides. Rest I used 60 lb. felt.
@ryanrysmm24777 жыл бұрын
should always put a slip sheet like rossin paper over any felt under a metal roof. My opinion use grace ultra under the entire roof and not felt because the felt does not self seal penetrations...exposed fastener metal roofs are junk anyhow because the expansion and contraction moves the fasteners enough to cause leaks...you're lucky to get 15yrs out of an exposed fastener system without leaks. JUNK! Buy a good concealed system through petersen aluminum or ATAS.
@barryginter72607 жыл бұрын
There are no exposed fasteners. Panel snaps over fasteners.
@barryginter72607 жыл бұрын
I purchase the material from Manard's. They were about 25% cheaper than anyone else. Mainly because they make their own product, eliminates the middle man and their commission. They make exposed and "HIDDEN FASTENER" metal roofs. They also sell all the trim you need to finish roof. They have video and a very good "how to" install book. I used 60# felt over the existing roof. Felt is just a surface to protect any scratches, which prevent any possibility of rust from the underside. Some people suggest using a synthetic under lament. This underlayment is very slippery and twice the cost. I used ice and shield on both ends and overhangs. Good Luck.
@barryginter72607 жыл бұрын
I used 60 Lb. felt. Metal expands and contracts with heat. Putting the felt down helps prevent any scratches to the panels. Used ice and shield on ends and lower 3 feet.
@cattigereyes16 жыл бұрын
Wait by installing over existing roof without tearing it off your adding weight to the roof and stress to everything holding it up! Right? The old shingles should be removed and roof inspected before the newer more expensive roof goes one! A liner needs to be used under the metal as well and screws with self sealing gaskets. Wheres your sewer vent?
@fringestream9906 жыл бұрын
cattigereyes1 fairly normal for people to put up to 3 layers of shingles.
@cattigereyes16 жыл бұрын
Josh Washington just google the code it ONLY allows two sets max unless the roof pitch is...... also it adds stress due to extra weight and just NOT a good idea!
@georgedennison33386 жыл бұрын
It doesn't look like there are any furring strips beneath the metal roof. I am in the midst of a metal locking panel, hidden fastener roof. The distributors were adament that there HAD to be furring strips on top of the abrasive 3-tab. Without it, the expansion and contraction of the thin metal will wear through the underlayment, then the metal. Also, the movement from heating and cooling of the panels requires screws, not nails. Nails will work loose, and at the first windy storm, the lightweight roof panels WILL fly away. I don't see the advantage of the ramp to get the roof panels on the roof. They are NOT heavy, and these are short enough one person can handle them without bending. They appear to be long enough to learn against the eave. Overall, if you are wanting to learn how to do metal roof, do NOT watch this video.

First thing I see is that huge ramp they built and I immediately knew this was going to be a shit-show What the actual F are they doing? Just push the damn piece of roofing up on the roof. These people shouldn't be doing this if they can't even manhandle a single piece of standing seam roof panel up onto the roof... It also explains why they put a metal roof on top of shingles too. SMH

I don't get pulling it up with a rope. You could of just pushed it up as far as you could from the ground and have one hold it while the other went up and pulled it up. Just an idea.
@johnnybarbar74356 жыл бұрын
Several reasons, wind safety, rope across bottom of panel buffers it from scraping, extra margin of safety from him falling off roof edge, reduces stooping/bending over, etc.
