When I started playing 30 years ago, I used to just play semi tones in 4ths. I didn't know what it was but I knew it was something exotic. :) Would love to see a video on the whole tone scale if you've got one to un-pack, Shred. Metal guys might also want to see use cases for half/whole and whole/half diminished (dominant scale and tonic diminished scale as I think the jazz guys call them). Jazz guy Robby Barnby covers those as well but you have to be really on top of theory to get it. Generally we metal guys don't do well with understanding diminished and such beyond shapes and un-successfully trying to use Locrian mode to sound outside. Minor 7 b5 also tends to get used less versus a full diminished (I tend to use min7b5-dim7 as a descending chromatic movement on top). I was surprised to find there is a formal classification for major 7b5 chord. It's not complicated but I didn't know it was recognized and classified as a thing (sort of like the rarely used maj11 or calling a dom7 chord a "major minor 7"). I thought the closest one could come to these would be some kind of alt chord as notated in frustratingly vague jazz charts. "It's an alt chord. Just put whatever extensions you want on it!" Suddenly the gig has turned into an Obscura or Cynic audition...

Hey come on Hammett knows the major scale 2.

He knows lots of scales actually. Of course the blues scale sells better though!

I have same question I looked up the hirajoshi scale and got E F# G B C did you make a mistake or is there another version of the scale I’m not aware of? I entered the notes you gave in Guitar Gravitas app and it said it’s the Chinese scale

There's 3 common versions of the Hirajoshi scale. I'm using the BURROWS version in this video. The spelling you listed is the KOSTKA variation. I'll also see the KOSTKA called the KUMOI scale as well. They're just modes of the same notes. In other words, they share the same notes but start on a different degree. Hope that makes sense

isn't E-Hirajoshi : E F# G B C (R, 2, b3, 5, b6) ?
@musictheoryforguitar135 күн бұрын
Yes! That's one of 3 common variations. I'm using the first type listed on wikipedia, known as the BURROW'S variation.

@@pinx5976 Haha, hopefully it's not too confusing. Marty Friedman plays the Hirajoshi in a different way than the two ways we discussed. He plays E-F-A-B-C!

Huh, I could have sworn you had a video where the scale was (using E Hirajoshi, for example), F# G B C E F#! Or is that just a weird arpeggio form of it? Either way, that pattern sounds dope in the song I used it in, lol. Edit: I said arpeggio, but I guess it's more of a modal form, second mode of E Hirajoshi? Is that still Dorian?
@musictheoryforguitar135 күн бұрын
@@jaredbryce7964 That sounds about right. The IWATO and KUMOI scales are just modes of HIRAJOSHI. They each have a unique personality
