Between Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson, there was Lizzy Borden. Often mislabeled as glam metal, Lizzy Borden actually spent the 80s putting out consistently badass power metal albums with catchy melodic riffs. The band was fronted by the vocalist of the same name who, along with his brother and drummer, Joey Scott, would be the only mainstays across all 7 (so far) albums. Still, there's no denying the guitarists involved also deserve a ton of credit, especially Mike Davis on bass, and guitarists, Tony Matuzak, Gene Allen, and Alex Nelson. Settle in and check out the history of Lizzy Borden and find out why this LA-based heavy metal band deserves another listen.

These guys came around at a time when there was no sub genres of metal. It was just that - Metal. I remember listening to this band as well as Slayer and Venom. Back in the early - mid 80s, it was all metal and it was all good.

@malmstring
@malmstring 3 жыл бұрын
I had it too and listened to Visual Lies a lot in 1988. It has its moments. It's well produced and playing is really good on it. But I grew tired of Bordens singing style. He's a one trick pony that is not that pleasant to listen to for longer periods. A big part of it is his "goat vibrato". He was more than a little hokey both in singing and appearance. Very recognizeable and hard to forget, but it was fairly obvious why he didn't go really big. Compared to similar style era bands like ex. Dokken, Helloween or what have you - Borden was quite far off in terms of quality.

@@malmstring I'm a fan but I agree about his voice, it occupies frequencies that makes it almost the equivalent of the CD mastering "loudness wars" Menace to Society is my favorite. Lizzy Borden was a breath of fresh air in an overly hyped metal scene. A lot of these more "popular" bands were one hit wonders where Lizzy Borden just went out balls to the wall and did what they did best...just cool heavy metal. Dead Serious was ahead of its time. Thank you so much for this wonderful video about this far underappreciated, brilliant band!! Visual Lies is one of my all-time favorite records!! And, I also live My Midnight Things, especially "Long May They Haunt Us"! I hope they make another album!😃🤘🪓

I came to Lizzy through the Soundtrack to Black Roses - a ever so slightly different version of Me Against the World! It’s still my favourite track and visual Lies is my favourite album! Took me years and years to track down a really good quality copy in the UK! But happily I have one along with the Black Roses Soundtrack on vinyl! I also have their last album also happily on vinyl and it’s not that bad!

this was also how I found out about Lizzy Borden, through the Black Roses soundtrack, which in itself is also an incredible album!

excellent video man. i'm a long time Lizzy fan and this is awesome. Favorite album for me has to be visual lies but i swear, he took things to another level and was way ahead of the times with master of disguise

9:48 - You neglected to mention that "Visual Lies" was produced by Max Norman ( the Rick Rubin of his day). In the 80s Max Norman was considered the "lord of the metal" and bands wanted him for a producer! (Although Lizzy did say "Norman's a tyrant but he gets what he wants"!) This is why "Visual Lies" is their best-sounding LP of the 80s. Norman also produced Ozzy's "Dairy of a Madman" (81) and Grim Reaper's "Rock You To Hell" (87) among things...

I became a Lizzy fan shortly after Love you Pieces came out. I remember when the Live album and Menace came out. I dropped off at Visual Lies. Little too soft for me. Terror Rising was really good too. Catch your Death is a very strong track.

Master Of Disguise is the most EPIC album that (to me) Lizzy Borden has ever done! it is the only record of his that after I listen to the album, I'll listen to it over, and over, and over and over again! "One False Move"

Discovered Lizzy Borden with Menace to Society. Thought it was pretty good and then sadly forgot about the band. Wish I had stayed with them. I would have loved Master of Disguise. Going to check this album out.

yeah back in the day it was easy to forget about bands that were signed to independent labels that did not get a big promotional budget and Lizzy was stuck on Metal Blade Records through his whole career.

Great to see another Loudness fan here, I absolutely love Niihara-Sama’s vocals and Takasaki-Sama’s guitar-work, their releases from the 2010’s are also great (Rise to glory, Metal mad, and the sun will rise again (both the Japanese & English versions), but yeah, they’re still doin’ great...

I read somewhere that he's actually painfully shy in real life, and one can kinda tell that watching his interviews. What a great band, seen 'em live when they toured in support of "Appointment with death", he changed costumes for every song. Painted the faces of people in the front row with "blood" from a skull, awesome show and top quality heavy metal.
