I had it too and listened to Visual Lies a lot in 1988. It has its moments. It's well produced and playing is really good on it. But I grew tired of Bordens singing style. He's a one trick pony that is not that pleasant to listen to for longer periods. A big part of it is his "goat vibrato". He was more than a little hokey both in singing and appearance. Very recognizeable and hard to forget, but it was fairly obvious why he didn't go really big. Compared to similar style era bands like ex. Dokken, Helloween or what have you - Borden was quite far off in terms of quality.

9:48 - You neglected to mention that "Visual Lies" was produced by Max Norman ( the Rick Rubin of his day). In the 80s Max Norman was considered the "lord of the metal" and bands wanted him for a producer! (Although Lizzy did say "Norman's a tyrant but he gets what he wants"!) This is why "Visual Lies" is their best-sounding LP of the 80s. Norman also produced Ozzy's "Dairy of a Madman" (81) and Grim Reaper's "Rock You To Hell" (87) among things...

Lizzy Borden had that Alice Cooper / WASP imagery with a sound that was a little too similiar to Iron Maiden and too much "heavy metal" to appeal to the thrash metal kids or the glam metal kids +,the fact that they did not have a big name manager to hook them up onto any significant tours and they were strapped to an indie label Metal Blade throughout the 80's, it's easy to understand why they never made it out of the club scene. Having revisited a bunch of their music in recent years I find that much of it holds up well. I really like the album MASTER OF DISGUISE (I agree with the narrarator that "Sins of the Flesh" is the album's most outstanding song), MENACE TO SOCIETY and the new one, MY MIDNIGHT THINGS (The narrator and I disagree on this. Far from being as good as the 80's but there are enough good songs to recommend it.) As a kid the 1st album I bought by these guys was MURDERESS METAL ROAD SHOW. The silver look on VISUAL LIES may have hurt the band advance. They looked pretty silly at the time, at least that's what I thought at age 16 and lookng back on it now, no that look was not cool. Thanks for highlighting Zak Snyder as the director of one of those late 80's Lizzy videos. That is a really cool obscure fact to dig out.

Great to see another Loudness fan here, I absolutely love Niihara-Sama’s vocals and Takasaki-Sama’s guitar-work, their releases from the 2010’s are also great (Rise to glory, Metal mad, and the sun will rise again (both the Japanese & English versions), but yeah, they’re still doin’ great...

This is one of my favorite 80´s metal bands and their debut album is definitely in my top 10

Menace to society was my introduction to Lizzy Borden and I think that it's a flawless album! He should do an anniversary tour of that album and play it entirely! The rest just a good song here and there. They maybe could have been bigger if they've stick to the original concept and music, but we will never know now. I've seen them 3 times; in 2001, 2011 and 2022 and they always put a great show!

Zanzibar, Phantoms. Notorious and We Only Come Out at Night are some of the best tracks ever!

Not just Dickinson, but there are some traces of “Warning” era Geoff Tate in there, too. The ironic part is he seems like such a mellow guy LOL!

They all are. Had a blast with them in Colorado in 2002. Very nice guys! Lizzy and I shared a half gallon of Jaeger with his brother. I got to sing on Rod Of Iron!

I was just thinking the same thing. He sounds like a mix between Dickinson and Tate. What a killer combo

Def. hear the Geoff Tate comparison.

Without reading the comments first, Tate and Operation Mind Crime Live came to mind. I can hear similarities. Need to do one of these on Queensrÿche.

I read somewhere that he's actually painfully shy in real life, and one can kinda tell that watching his interviews. What a great band, seen 'em live when they toured in support of "Appointment with death", he changed costumes for every song. Painted the faces of people in the front row with "blood" from a skull, awesome show and top quality heavy metal.

Great band. Saw them live many years ago, they were incredible live. Sadly this band has never recieved the credit they deserve for being an incredible band. They are still cranking. Hopeful to see them live again.

Also everything Lizzy does is gold. Every album is a masterpiece. Thanks again Lizzy

Interesting point was made in regard of this band going into goth/industrual rock. I feel like it was a safe haven for a lot of hard rock oriented bands at the time. Nowadays if I grab early records of "69 Eyes", or 2000s era "Lacrimas Profundere", and listen to them without prejudice, than I can imagine that it is pretty much Glam Metal.. Just oriented for different audience. Same sleazy behaviour and outfits, same riffs...

Master Of Disguise is the most EPIC album that (to me) Lizzy Borden has ever done! it is the only record of his that after I listen to the album, I'll listen to it over, and over, and over and over again! "One False Move"

I’ve been reading through the comments, trying to find the words that I wanted to say about that album. And then I read yours. And I feel no need any longer. Well stated.

I still have my "Give em the axe", and 12" Me Against The World promo. Loved this band. :)
