Beautiful result on the shaper, apparently removing material gives a better finish than moving material as is done in traditional knurling. Using the same method you can make gears on the shaper if you can grind a tool to the correct profile.

Neat deal. Sometimes we either make our own tooling for either time or money reasons but when can put the time in to make the items better looking than made by the original because we can put the time in to do it. That is why we are in the hobby

Nice Steve, today at the engine shop I told the owner the same thing, that one is only limited to his imagination. I'm not afraid to try something new, it's taking awhile but he is coming around to new ideas to use in his shop, good luck on the trip hope to see a new toy for the shop soon.

Wow Steve, this video really allows the imagination to go wild. (as Brian said). I guess these machines have virtually unlimited potential and so, so rigid. I can see Adam Booth and Mike Wiggwns' are going to have lots of fun and good experiences with their shapers. Thanks for sharing. Kindest regards. Joe.

Very nice. I suppose you are technically broaching the knurl .Shaper can broach, and I do something very like it on my tiny Taig lathe, having built a 60-hole index plate. But I can't do 45 deg knurls. Good luck with your new tool.

Love watching your interesting uses of a shaper! Is there anything you can't do with it? If you're getting a metal planer I will die of envy. It'll be on you. Maybe a Monoset T&C grinder? Either way, have a safe trip, don't haul anything bcbloc02 wouldn't haul...

@ChirpysTinkerings6 жыл бұрын
pretty neat, I hope your trip goes well and that you can get your piece of machinery. Im guessing a metal planer or surface grinder :P Also, if you have some round tool steel, you can make your own knurling wheels using this method.
@kejay746 жыл бұрын
Perhaps 'crudely' on the wheels. Keep in mind that the cutter is cutting deeper in the middle than at the edges of the round part. True knurls of a pattern such as this would require coordinated motion of the cutter AND rotary table to keep the depth of cut uniform. Good thought! Keep thinkin' & tinkerin'! ;
@ChirpysTinkerings6 жыл бұрын
yea, I was talking about straight knurls like he had on his thumbwheels that were on the original tool holder nuts. Another thing that would be cool is something like his triple start knurls that he did on the tap holder he did a while back.

If you want to be really shure it´s running true, you can push the part with your ball bearing over the point, where it´s running true, and pull the bearing slowly back. That gives you a guarantee, that it is running true.Now, you need to build a mechanism, which turns the 10 degree on the rotary table automatically between the strokes.. :-)
