The 52-Hertz Whale has a special frequency pitch that doesn’t reach other whales. Therefore, it cannot communicate with other whales, and the other whales fail to understand it. The whale is alone. The term “Alien” comes with the feelings of being unsual and something no one understands. The expression that you mentioned “feeling alienated” can mean feeling lonely and left out, like the whale. So the 52-Hertz Whale + Alien = Whalien 52 BTS uses the whale to describe the feeling of lonelines. The whale is described as “the most lonely creature in the world” in the first lyric of the song by RM. What Taylor was saying is that we are the whale. Saying out loud that you love BTS comes with criticism and judgement from others. We feel alone and cheer for them silently in our everyday lives. But when you’re in a BTS concert and surrounded by other whales who love and appreciate the same people and music that you do, you have the feeling of acceptance. Like you’re not alone and you’re at home. All the lonely creatures of the world came together and formed a voice that could be heard all over the world. BTS gave us that voice. This song live is so beautiful. The song itself sounds upbeat but carries sorrow and loneliness with it. Their voices blend so well together and it’s one of my favorite songs that I could talk about all day 💜

This is genuinely in my all-time top 5 BTS songs. I adore adore adore it. “Whalien 52” sees the group address their inability to connect with others, stardom, and the anxiety it brings. Whalien 52 is a metaphor for their own artistry, their own loneliness, and the feeling that comes with talking but never being heard, questioned but never understood. It is simultaneously being the loneliest whale in the world, a whale that actually exists but sings too high (52Hz) to be heard by any of its kind.... being an alien (alienated). Suga, in the beginning, goes, “In the middle of this wide ocean, a whale talks in a low, calm, and lonely voice, that it can never reach someone else no matter how hard it shouts, feels so lonely that it closes the mouth.” He continues. “It’s fine, whatever it is. Now I don’t care. When this guy called loneliness stays by my side by himself, I become completely alone and lock a padlock in solitude.” J-Hope then follows: The world never knows 내가 얼마나 슬픈지를 how sad I am 내 아픔은 섞일 수 없는 My pain is unmixable 물과 기름 water and oil 그저 난 수면 위에서만 숨을 쉴 때 관심 끝 The attention on me is only there when I breathe above the water surface 외로운 바닷속 꼬마 A lonely kid under the ocean 나도 알리고 싶네 I, too, want to let the world know

J-Hope speaks of his pain and hurt, as oil and water. Never to be mixed with each other, a layer on top of one another and separate. He chooses to swim to the surface to breathe and says, “But I always think, even if I sleep curled up like a shrimp now, that I must dream like a whale - the praise that will come one day will make me dance every day.” RM then speaks, “My mom said that the ocean is blue - she told me to raise my voice with all my strength to reach farther but what should I do? The place is too dark and full of whales that speak other languages.” Here, RM speaks of the unknown, using the deep ocean as a metaphor for the things he does not understand or speak. “I want to say I love you, a round that I sing alone. I run over the same music sheet - the ocean is too deep but I’m still unfortunate. No one will know even if I cry.” Whalien 52 is a perfect metaphor for the loneliness one feels growing up, never to be understood or heard. It is knowing that what you say is futile when your words are spoken but never understood by someone in the same frequency. It is a metaphor for the anxiety that comes with venturing into the unknown for the first time and wondering if your book will be ever read, your poems recited and your music memorised, wondering if you would ever be understood but living with the hope, you will.

For many, Whalien 52 is a perfect metaphor for BTS’ own story - their story of how they rose, even when many thought differently. It is the story of how they waded between seas when the only thing they wanted to do was to perform. It is BTS speaking of their loneliness, as artists and as humans themselves. In a letter for ARMY, RM wrote, “Just like in Whalien 52, I was a lonely whale, but I didn’t realise you guys are the wide sea that hugged me while I’m breathing and swimming. Catch my hertz and willingly listen.” The story of the 52-Hertz whale also has had much criticism surrounding it. There has been talk of whether or not such a whale exists and if so, if it truly is alone. Perhaps, the 52-Hertz whale is an anomaly, perhaps it is a hybrid, perhaps there are many more of them. There is a possibility that the 52- Hertz is all alone but it is also entirely possible, it is heard and understood. In Whalien 52, a lyric goes, “An endless signal will reach someday everywhere, even to the other side of the earth.” Our songs will be heard, even if they are not understood. Our words will be understood, repeated, in this lonely void. Perhaps, we are not alone as we think we are. Perhaps, there are more of us. Perhaps, our words need to be spoken, our music needs to be performed, even if there is no one to witness them at all.

Whale is now older so he/she is "talking" at 47Hz (if is still alive since he/she was heard last time about 5 years ago (off North west coast as always). Institute of Oceanography in San Diego last year heard some noise but couldn't say if that is alone or few (if he/she is alone or with someone or is that the noise mixed with something else). @@JohnReavesLive Me too John, all kinds of them. I think most people who are drawn to, then adore BTS & their music/ performances/personalities to the point they want to know what every lyric means are people that have an OPEN & teachable mind. Perhaps that's one of the biggest character traits that unites ARMYS worldwide from the get go is; that we thirst for knowledge & understanding & will take the time to gain those things when we find a worthwhile reason. We like to dig deeper to find & make new connections. So it makes perfect sense that a lot of varied subjects DO fascinate us. But also, I get it that you shortened that one video, bc those subjects haven't been discussed here & you sensed that he was going maybe a bit off into other subjects that were less relevant to reacting to a song. You have good judgement, a great ability to appreciate anything worth appreciating, so much of the things you say show that you're smart and thoughtful about what you say, show and post so we know you'll make good calls.on those matters. Go with your gut, it's served you well so far, so follow your heart, your inner instiincts. ... to quote you : 💥💥(BOOM !!emoji lol)

Bravo BTS! Love the biologist video. In another lifetime, Biology was my course so Whalien52 is especially special to me. I truly hope this beautiful whale has found their own ocean community and their sound has been heard. For BTS - hope they experience fewer lonely moments and when they do, they feel the love and comforting embrace deeply and know that they are heard. For all of us who also go through periods of loneliness, there will always be someone who understands and who will hear us. Just reach out and let's listen carefully to that undetectable 52 hertz. For those of us living in a world of silence, non verbal language is even more precious. Let us all learn to communicate as best as we can. Thanks John!

I have always felt that BTS was so maligned and held back in South Korea early on that their very real musical expressivity was either not being heard but by a few or dismissed in their native land. BTS would make amazing music yet hearing it was largely being impeded by outside elements. BTS was much like this whale unable to be heard due to circumstances beyond their control. BTS wound up going global in an effort to be heard. The result was they were perceived in SK as not creating for the Korean audience, unlike the other three letter top tier group of the time whose fans were determined to keep BTS from being heard. We are talking 2015 at the height of BTS being shat upon that Whalien 52 came out. BTS would keep expressing even if they felt alienated from the praised domestic music scene they had desired to communicate in. At the end of the song, the lonely whale (BTS) wishfully sends its signal across the world hoping to be heard. So for me this song harkens to some very hard times in 2015 and the simple desire of the boys for people to understand their music.

Yes, well said. Still today Korean politicians try to use BTS global fames to their political advantages and yet the Korean medias and the music industries both in Korea and the US try to dismiss them as much as possible.

The performance of Whalien was a one-time performance during Festa 2018. (BTS's birthday/debut date, 6/12/13) Festa performances are often unusual pieces that aren't otherwise performed. E.g.: also during Festa 2018 "Prom Party," Tae and Jin performed their OST song "It's Definitely You," for the only time; Jimin and Jungkook danced to MJ's "Black and White"; and the rappers performed "Ddaeng."

When you talk about 'would you appreciate something if you had to enjoy it alone?' I've been doing that my whole life. When I was around 15 I decided to go by myself to the theater to watch a movie that I really wanted to see. Someone I knew was shocked and asked how could I go to a movie alone. My response to that was if I had to wait for someone to go with me I might never see it so I would rather go alone and enjoy the things I like rather than wait for someone to join me (which might never happen) and never get to experience anything. It's great when you have people around you who can share your interests but you should never let having no one around stop you from enjoying things completely.

Songs like this really put BTS in a class of their own. It's a wonderful song which must be very uplifting for those struggling to find their place in life. Jungkook does most of their adlibs with Jimin coming in close behind but occasionally you'll hear an amazing high note in the background and it's Jin singing. Jungkook also sings most of the song guides which they listen to before apportioning parts and turning it into the song we know. That young man is amazing. That live performance was from the FESTA Prom Party 2018 which had lots of fun performances including JK and Jimin dressed in onesies then changing into their dance gear for Black and White and V and Jin singing, Definitely You. How I wish I'd been there. Thanks, John for including the biologist. He was very interesting and, as an ARMY, able to see things from both perspectives.

John......This was the first BTS CD that I purchased and every time I hear this song.....I get tears.....Funny you should talk about your small town....I also grew up in a town so small that it only had a four corners, not even a stoplight. I always felt like I didn't belong and needed to escape. I left at 17 for college, and still felt like I didn't know my purpose in life, the only thing that I ever got complete pleasure in was my love of music and being in a crowd at live venues, amongst people with like outlooks......I was called a "groupie, a "gypsy", amongst other chosen titles.....Somehow, this just challenged me to not let these "labels" effect my life too often. I even tried returning to my home state and location....but could never stay for long.....Due to family responsibilities, I have had to be back for the last 6 years .....before the pandemic, I was still able to intermittently go to live music performances, even seeing some musician friends that I've known for 20 years ( hence, not a groupie, but a true friendship)...Whalien, is one of the songs that when I started to feel the walls closing in, that I would go get in the car, drive around back roads( I'm sure your being from a small town, that there are no lack of them) and blast the stereo as loud as my speakers would allow. This song always really touched me, and I'm now aware of how why. Thanks for this review......I really appreciate it! L

I really couldn't wait for you to listen to Whalien52. I've always felt like this is "my" song, the song made for those who always sang a little bit out of tune and struggle to reach others with all the word that we keep in our hearts. If Life Goes On and Magic Shop saved my life back when I became Army, this song made me understand I had found a home, a special place where I could be myself and be listened, understood, a place where I belong to. I'm so glad you liked it! [Edit: A few months ago the UCLA stated that they are sure that at least another whale that sings at 52Hertz exists. They recorded her voice while they where recording the original 52, at the same time, coming from another direction. So 52 isn't lonely now! Yay!🥰] (But please, I beg you: change lyric video. I know you like that kind of video and that you praise the videomakers a lot, but they are not accurate with the translation. At all. You're losing so much of the poetry behind the lyrics of the songs...)

Like so many ARMY, I love this song, but the scientific detail brought in the second video you shared was new to me and I also loved the presenter. Knowing RM I had assumed that there really was such a whale in the ocean, but it was lovely to have that assumption confirmed - and also deeply sad. I know however that we may simply be projecting our own feelings onto a wild animal, who may not share them at all, but most whales are - at least at times - social animals, and perhaps this whale may feel a certain lack. But he's been around for so long he must have acclimatised, and he is healthy, which is beautiful. I wish he could be found, but also fear what would happen to him if he were found by humans. Thanks for sharing your reaction to this, and the additional videos which touch on the subject as well.

some of the lyrics to this song made me think they were channeling the feelings they had when they were just starting, wondering whether there would be someone out there listening to them...

Is it just me or anyone else is almost crying for the lonely whale, hahah. Beautiful message: keep voicing your message, someone, sometime, somewhere, will hear it. Love all the FESTA performances cause we hear them singing so clear live.

Hi, i am back. Good reaction, ty. This song is dope. I only saw the live once before or twice. The guys look great in this video. Such feels! I always thought the song meant they sang and sang but no one heard them until Army. So they no longer alone. We hear them and share their song with others. =0) Hugs. -NY USA 2019 Army 💜 Karina Holst Hebsgaard said on 9/2021 Scientists have recorded a whale using a 52 MHz frequency. Whales usually use a frequency around 20-30 MHz. This one whale is an anomaly and probably can't communicate with other whales (they can't hear it) so it's an "alienated whale"/Whalien dubbed The Most Lonely Whale by the scientific community. That's the inspiration behind the song. 😉💜 (Edit: Shrimp use light to communicate, so they're silent = 0 MHz)

Aren't BTS and Armys great? How in the world BTS find this sort of things, make a song about it to relate to us and teach us, humans, to be better people. Also there are very professional Armys everywhere analyze and spread abundance of knowledges and sharing with everybody. You need to react to their another song called 134340 about Pluto.

You've mentioned in many videos how you prefer performances where they don't have complex and/or high energy choreography. While mostly title tracks have the full choreography, concerts as you can imagine last more than 2 hours and energy management is very necessary. Thus, maybe 4-8 songs have the full choreography, definitely the first 3 to open the show. A bunch of others have half choreography -- the other half of the song is spent spreading out to the stage and reaching out to fans in the venue. The rest are performed without, or with minimal choreography. In the earlier tours, they had songs performed solo (with dancers), which served as rest periods for the other members as well. Perhaps this is why they had more full choreographed songs in the show, compared to say, the Permission to Dance on Stage where the setlist are all OT7 (and mostly title tracks). This isn't unique to BTS of course, a group like Dreamcatcher would do a 1 hour festival set (see their Primavera concert) with opening and closing songs with the full choreo and the big middle just singing. It's all good.

Oh I'm totes geeking out. Now I knew of it but was curious if the song actually was referring to it or just liked the name. Well knowing anything RM does is with deliberate purpose so should have known but ya never know it could be a phone in right? Raised by Machiavelli, I trust but verify.
