I recently built a case using harbor freights case. And aftermarket foam. And its just as good as the pelican. Its the nelpak that really makes the difference. Wish it was cheeper!

You can get a complete 40 knife case with foam pre-installed for about $160. Not too bad IMO.

I have one of these and love it! Since I have reduced the size of my collection, I have been able to consolidate into just this one case. The only thing that I have "modified" is adding chunks of open cell foam in the bottom of the slots that contain shorter knives, so they stick up out of the slot like a larger knife would. I got tired of struggling to retrieve smaller knives; simple fix, but very effective!

Nalpak is top notch stuff. I have the 1450 pelican and mistakenly ordered it with the 32 holes when I wanted 40. But most of us knife guys are gun guys and have 50 cal ammo cans. Nalpak makes an insert for the ammo can and it holds 16 knives. I have three…. Thanks for showing us more options and I’m sure that Nalpak appreciates the recognition.

Great case and a nice mini run-down too. I keep my knives in wooden cigar boxes, which I think my next video is about. But when my collection grows I'm going to have to explore a storage solution like this. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Your system certainly keeps your knives secure but does have some limitations. I have had a knife collection since I was a kid and have always kept my knives in chests with shallow drawers so the knives can be easily displayed and organized. I built my first chest in my early teens ( small with 8 drawers). I recently built a 12 drawer cabinet with a sliding tray in each drawer for additional storage space. I also catalog all my knives. I started with keeping the information for each knife in a small notebook (there were no personal computers back when I started collecting) and now have my collection cataloged on a computer with pictures of each knife and links to other technical information regarding the knife. It occurred to me that it would be fun if you had an episode where us collectors could share information on how we store and manage our collections. I am not certain how this would work but it would definitely be interesting.

yeah, I definitely prefer drawer storage. You can't see the knives when they're stored vertically in a foam case.

I have an old Gerber display case that I modified. I also have one of those wood cases with the glass top and wood drawers. My EDC stay in one of those nightstand things meant to hold your wallet and such. The dress knives stay in my box with my cufflinks and tie tacks. I'm looking for another case.

im on nalpak but i cant tell if the apache case foam has that blue on the inside. do you know ?

Nalpak is happy to customize their sizes for a fee. I had them cut the pockets in the opposite direction so you see the broad side of the knife and fit it for a Kitchen drawer. Works great for me in a household with no children.

I really need to get the Nalpak 40 lol. The pick and pull foam that comes with the Pelican cases sucks. Mine looks like absolute crap 😆

Do it! Get a 40 slot case. I got a Pelican Vault a couple months ago with 40 vertical slots and it was worth the $170 USD I paid. Such a big upgrade from the nylon pouch case I was using. Those work, but the Nalpak cases seem more practical.

Will the lid close with that knife sticking up? I'm looking at the 21 knife version of this Pelican from them. I feel like the 21 would last me awhile, then I'd maybe grab the small 8 knife one that the knives lay in horizontally, for bigger knives like my Manix 2 XL, and my Velona.

It will close easily. The knives can stick out quite a bit without stopping the case from closing.

I've always wanted one of those cases but the total price is a little more than I want to spend so I just went to Lowes and I got a five drawer metal tool chest for $100.00. It works pretty good but not nearly as space efficient or portable as those cases. Someday....

Harbor Freight Apache 3800 is $40. It's 95% the same thing as a $300 Pelican case

Ya I have both the Apache and Pelican versions of the 1450... As an owner of both, I will always buy Pelican. Substantially higher quality. The Apache will absolutely work, but I'm more than happy to pay extra for the Pelican.

I like the looks of this system, but they space them out a bit too much. The foam for the Apache 2800 only holds 24 knives. They definitely need to redesign it to hold more.

Nice. I have 3 cases, one each for budget, mid range and higher end knives. I sort them by size. I only have slots in the budget case, whereas I keep the higher range knives with their boxes in their own case. Such is the life of a knife collector. Storage is its own obsession.

Awesome cases but no way im paying hundreds of dollar's for just the foam... i can get a whole case and pluck foam for like $40 and it does the same thing. Had mine for a very long time and still works fine. Everyone has their own thing tho. Awesome review.
