Demetrio Stratos really liked to experiment with the voice, and traveled all around the world to learn voice secrets. In fact more of its vocal jokes in songs like this are clearly a reference to foreign peoples or tribal cultures. PFM made an amazing song dedicated to him, titled “Maestro della voce” (that means Voice Master)

Demetrio Stratos was incredible. He studied the voice and created a way to sing two/three notes at the same time. Probably technically he has been the greatest italian voice of every time (he song in Italy and often in italian too, but he was actually greek), he reached also incredibly powerful and high notes. He also recorded for RAI in the seventies a documentary series about the use of the voice. One of my most preferred song from Area is Gerontocrazia: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imO1p56oj9p4b6s you could start from minute 2:43 if you wanna skip the strange first part song in Greek, after that you have the part song in italian. Recorded on RAI TV in the seventies.

He doesn't create "harmonic or throat singing" ; he learned listening to Mongolian throat singing and , i must admit , he did not master that technique . But he surely was a precursor of time and a great vocal singer/experimenter performer .

Great Ang! Area, the most experimental of the italian progressive rock bands. Experimental jazz, electronic jazz, fusion, world music (Mediterranean sounds hence arabesque also). Stratos got diplophony and even quadriphony with the voice. They were a left wing oriented band, supporting the once named "metropolitan indians" actions, the precursors of nowaday "flashing mobs" guys. Thank you to share your impressions about them.

Stratos was a Greek Levantine (born in Alexandria Egypt), I am an Italian Levatine born there too... the music here has Greek folk style progressions (widespread during the Ottoman occupation), he was singing in Greek also. His vocal extension was unique and he was an expert of triplephony (throat singing), during his lessons he used to explain how the first musical instrument was the voice, just like the wind blowing on hollowed bone or wood produces pentatonic notes...

I would suggest to listen to the song "Luglio, Agosto e Settembre (nero)" [July, August and September (black)] for a quick blend of their "Mediterranean" jazz-rock style. Female arabic intro but be prepared for cacophony too. :)

AREA was a prog rock band active in Italy in the 70's and Demetrio Stratos was the extraordinary vocalist. He studied for many years the different techniques for using the voice, searching for an original approach to express himself out of well-established styles. He was inspired by ethnic music as well as contemporary music and poetry. In the USA, he worked with John Cage. Unfortunately he died very young (33 year old) in 1978. He was a special human being. Hoping this is useful.

He was able to emit 3 sound at the same time. Was so incredible that the Italian National Research Institue hired him to study his voice. With the National Institue published 2 Lp only about voice exercises and extreme voice capabilities. They are named Flautofonie and Cantare la voce.

Stratos had a unique vocal instrument and was an athlete and researcher of the voice. He studied along voice scientists, but I'm pretty sure the scientists ended up studying him 😂😂😂. Well, after all the explanatory comments, there’s not much left to add about Stratos and Area (Demetrio’s insanely deep research on the voice as a musical instrument, the odd time signatures, the intricated riffs, the fact that some members of the band are now teachers in Italian colleges of music,…). As for coffee… you’re right, we don’t run on Dunkin: I think the closest you can get to an Italian espresso in the US is Starbucks. I’m sure there are many Family owned cafes which offer good espresso, but I guess not nationwide. We Italians like just a splash of super black coffee in a tiny-small cup (many times a day)!

The entire lp, AREA first album, 'Arbeit macht frei', is complitely mindblowing. They were ready to record it since beg 1972 but until 1973 nobody wanted to publish it... except a small label that did not exist yet. Gianni Sassi, a photographer and a graphic designer involved in business with other italian producers decided to found his 'CRAMPS' label expecially to give the birth to this album. Suggest you to listen the whole work.
