Hey guys. Love your hidden gems videos - thank you :). As for the discussion at the end of the video, I believe some of us might be looking at this the wrong way. You're not the ones driving prices up. The only thing you guys do is let us know about very cool games that we probably wouldn't know about otherwise - you're doing us a service :). If there's someone to blame here is us, when we decide to buy a game even if the price is ludicrous. That's what drives prices up. If re-sellers see they can get away with high prices, they will sell them at those prices. If there's not a market for expensive games, prices will go down. So please keep the hidden games coming. And Reggie, don't worry about this because it's definitely not your fault. :)

ways to know are if you can see a two digit number pressed in the game cartridge sticker, look under the cartridge and see a nintendo logo, check the game cartridge sticker and make sure a code that looks like this AGB-AAWJ-JPN when googled actually belongs to the game title, that one belongs to contra hard spirits. those are some ways to tell

Also copyright and piracy laws are a thing
@JJclash8 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with downloading ROMs that you aren't able to buy New. Not everyone can afford a physical copy + a system. However, yes it's piracy if the game is re-released as a digital copy somewhere. (e.g. Virtual Console).
@GameDjeenie8 жыл бұрын
ROMS are for people that are not into collecting but want to play the game anyway. Any collector prefer the real deal.
@JJclash8 жыл бұрын
I didn't realise that every collector has enough disposable income to be able to buy every single game they desires to play.
@KeijiMaeda868 жыл бұрын
To expand upon my original post.... If you truly really dearly care about collecting the physical game and are a collector. Then price of a game going from $10 to $15 shouldn't matter to you. Because real talk, that's the "price hiking" that is, IF at all, happening. And for the few expensive and rare games, they are usually about $40. For people that just want to play the games because they are fun, using ROMs should not be an issue. Yeah yeah, its "piracy". But honestly devs and publishers only care if you are pirating their new releases. Seeing as they are not even making new copies of these games at all. Buying them used is not profit for the publisher and is seen as just bad to a publisher.

I've walked out of stores with stacks of games that were mentioned in these Hidden Gems videos. No seriously, I bought like half of the PS3 "Hidden Gems" at Gamestop in one shot and said to the cashier "Metal Jesus sent me!" I got her cell number too. Didn't lead to anything, but still...I can confirm that these Hidden Gems videos are an absolute good in this world. Like butterscotch Krimpets or Surge soda. Absolute good. If you ask me, people are just complaining for the sake of complaining about something. "Drive the prices up"? If you already have the game, then you have no more need to be emotionally vested in its market. If you have to pay an extra dollar for it after the video comes out, and that dollar means that much to you, then you should have already gotten the game. Otherwise, suck it up, and more importantly, go get laid.

In case you're still wondering, the Bubble Bobble version shown in this video is the Arcade version; I've played the NES one to hell and back, and the palettes are different. Also, the problem with Round 99 might have something to do with the secret in the original version; you have to grab the crystal ball that shows up in the beginning on the right side of the stage, and then go into the door that shows up in the middle. You can beat the NES version without doing this, but you get the bad ending. I haven't played the GBA version too much, so I can't say for sure.

I understand the position of Metal Jesus and Reggie on these Hidden Gems videos. They've helped me a lot in knowing what some of the games are like for my GBA,PSP and 3DS systems. From my experience,it's stores and online vendors who selfishly raise prices of "retro" games-perhaps after viewing videos like this. But that's just their opportunistic streak talking. Most of these videos by Metal Jesus,Lord Karnage,etc are just trying to recommend good games for people to seek out and play. That's all. So keep up the good work Metal Jesus and Reggie!
@The_RadicalOne8 жыл бұрын
You sir, have a good understanding of what we're trying to do. Thank you
@Andregrindle8 жыл бұрын
Thanks I appreciate that. For the record,I have some of these games. Actually sought out Lady Sia from one of these videos.
@schweatty8 жыл бұрын
vendors and stores are only raising the prices because the demand for these games goes up after these types of videos come out. people are exposed to games they may not have heard of that they think they might like, so they seek them out and buy them. if more people weren't buying them, the prices would not go up. in a free market, the prices don't just go up by themselves. there is no conspiracy among the sellers to raise prices when these videos come out. if you go to a store that does raise prices based on a YT vid, then go to another store or buy on-line. ebay has made it impossible for local price collusion to be possible anymore.
@Andregrindle8 жыл бұрын
I really don't think that's true. Even with what you say,it's still the greed and avarice of the given store and vendor that drives the price up. These videos do not directly or indirectly cause games to go up in price. And schweatty perhaps you misunderstood. Obviously no store will raise the price of anything due to a KZbin video specifically. My point was they MAY have seen it. And it MAY influence pricing choices. And it's hard for me to believe that there's a mad throng of people rushing to these places seeking out retro video games in the numbers it would take to influence prices. The local store in my area just decided to change the pricing system of their GBA games. They used to be a lower fixed price. Now they aren't. The reason they changed their policy was because,as I can see behind the counter,they use video game price guides to gauge how much the games are. Online list videos don't seem to influence the sales at all,or the pricing choices. Same goes for a lot of the indie vendors I've been to outside of town. They have collector guides. And they aren't being inundated with customers with attitudes like "we say a specific game on a KZbin video,do you have it?". So I agree with Reggie and Metal Jesus here. It's not the fault of people like them that drives the prices up.
@schweatty8 жыл бұрын
I'm not saying its anyone's fault, but they do have an influence on game sales. You said yourself in your first post "They've helped me a lot in knowing what some of the games are like for my GBA,PSP and 3DS systems." so you go out and buy what you like. so do the other 35,500 people that have seen this video as of the time i am typing this. i myself have bought games based on what i like from these hidden gems videos. and when more people buy the same games, that means the demand goes up. the supply of these old games is fixed and the better the game, the less likely someone is willing to sell it, so there are less games available than people willing to buy them and the price goes up. where do you think the price guides you are talking about determine the prices? its from observed transactions in the market. its not just made up numbers. bottom line: its not greed and avarice, its the basic economic principles of supply and demand.

The rising prices concern seems a little silly to me. If Gumby wasn't mentioned here, you wouldn't know to buy it anyways, so what do you care if it was $1; you would've passed it by. If the game goes up to $10,000, either way you won't own the game so it hasn't changed anything. And if you did already know about it, well then good for you, you bought it already after all, right? It's just a troll argument. If you follow that logic, you have to take down reviews about all things. Instead, let's keep the retro community thriving. It has some of the kindest people I ever met. Keep up the good work guys. :D

Yeah as you know I was one of the complainers about this, but again I also want to know about these games myself so I cant really blame you for sharing. My Suggestions for Hidden Gems if you havent done them already: Froggers Adventures 1 & 2: This uses the classic movement of the original frogger and makes a story mode out of it, pretty decent platforming/adventure frogger game and both are really cheap.( I see one selling for $3 on ebay as im writing this) Dark Arena: It is basically a doom-like clone and works pretty good on the gba, I see you mentioned the doom ports on the gba. Those are the ones i think of atm,

Two GBA Hidden Gems that really surprised me how much fun they are to play are based on movies: 'The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause' and 'Fantastic 4: Flame On'. Who would have thought a video game based on a Tim Allen movie would be good! The music alone is fantastic!

Hi MJR and Reggie, I really enjoy the hidden gems videos, it's nice to hear about games that would probably not get the attention they deserve.

The people that drive up the prices are the resellers themselves, like the retro gaming stores, they're the ones that hit up the garage sales and flea markets before anyone and are checking craigslist all the time. You'd think they just waited there for people to bring them trade-ins.

Metal jesus, thank you so much for telling me about Ninja 5-0 I was looking for some sort of time killing game that has low level puzzles basically and I could play it on my phone through an emulator, I have now gladly sunk two days into this game, very solid recommendation!

The Lord of the Rings Two Towers and Return of the King for the GBA are two of my favourite action/RPGs on the system. And highly underrated + they'll always be cheap, being a licensed, movie game.

Monster Rancher Advance 1 & 2 are actually very solid games. Specifically the second one, they added a lot more content, and challenege in that game and it's really fun. Even if you're not a fan of the franchise, or haven't played one before, check these games out! Really underrated in my opinion.

I am always happy to see great games I enjoyed being talked about. SD Gundam... Since I am a Gundam fan, it was bias for me to say it was amazing. Sigma was a very unique experience.

The Lilo and Stitch GBA games are fun run and gun shooters that you can usually find for less than $5.

Thank you for making this video. Grew up poor, so i found myself getting only games i knew I'd like, and the way I'd try other games was trading games over the weekend with friends, but now i just got a RG35XX(Handheld retro game device made by Anbernic). I always hated emulators on most devices, even PC. Just never felt right for many of the games. This RG35XX handled is perfect for experiencing those retro games, while feeling more authentic. Specifically gameboy games more so than something like ps1, but this device can handle both. They also have better devices that can handle more, with joysticks and whatever but the one i got is perfect for what i wanted it for. Again, thank you for this video, and love the channel.

You could also use a flash cart (forget the name of the best one) and use a gba that's had a better screen modded (like $100). Play it on a real gameboy and put a ton of games on the flash cart that looks just like a real cartridge. A modded New 3DS xl is my favorite way though...love also having 3DS and DS games. So many good ones.

Finally some love to Summon Night, such a fun game. I went to California for a wedding with like 10 games in tow and that's the ONLY game I wound up playing. I was surprised since I got it on a whim and it wound up being so much fun.

Here are some potential GBA hidden gems for you guys to cover: Darius R(import), Star X, Pinball of the Dead, Racing Gears Advance, Phalanx, Sega Arcade Gallery, Jurassic Park: Park Builder, Mazes of Fate, Medal of Honor: Infiltrator, Robotech: The Macross Saga, and Strike Force Hydra.

I'm really impressed with these two videos. I've been researching lists of "hidden gems" or "underrated games" for the GBA, and they all either have suspiciously similar lists, as if such... _trusted bastions of integrity_ as IGN might be plagiarising other people's lists, or their idea of an underrated game is something that made everyone's top ten back in the day.

I have a few suggestions for the next video, if I may (probably some of them aren't that hidden, but they're not widely discussed either): Tactics Ogre - The Knight of Lodis, Onimusha Tactics, Mazes of Fate (1st person RPG on GBA!), Riviera The Promised Land, Shining Force Resurrection of the Dark Dragon and as mentioned in some comments before me, Yggdra Union. Great video as always, love the hidden gems series!

Watching MJR videos is like comfort food for and just like comfort food his videos bring back warm memories. While I grew up with the Gameboy and Sega Game Gear, the GBA and PSP have quickly grown to be my favorite handhelds. The GBA has a mix of backwards compatibility, original franchises and old franchise remakes that sets it apart from most other handhelds. Another reason I love MJR videos so much is because of the guests he has on his show. I would say that about 95% of the guests he has on, could easily be any one of my closest friends. One thing that any long time lover of video games and gaming culture knows, is that the gaming community itself is a hidden gem. If you want to find the funnest, friendliest and most reliable individuals on earth, look no further than the gaming community. Sometimes I feel as if our community is somehow the last remaining bastion of humanity : ) or maybe : ( I never tire of watching your episodes MetalJesusRocks !!! Your videos never fail to lift my spirits and that makes them beyond priceless !!!

The Hamtaro games are fun. Ham-Ham Heartbreak was my first GBA game, it's an adventure game where you create stuff, learn a language and solves puzzles with it, I still haven't beat it 100% as that's really hard. Then Rainbow Rescue, adventure with minigames and tons of content, it's my favorite. Lastly is Ham-ham games which is my favorite sportsgame and really challenging. I really recomend giving them a try! They are cute but not overly girly, and there's a lot of color, & the music is great!
