Metallic on black was an art project I had in an art class like 2 years ago and how it was sorta explained to me was to think that you're taking away or subtracting from the paper. We used reference photos so my suggestion would be to sketch in black and white on a white sheet, getting the actual true shading down that way you kno where the highlight in the final piece It's a difficult switch in your head to treat a pencil as subtracting instead of adding but that's sorta what you gotta see it as

It's actually a good idea to not take so much time on the sketches or even the lines. (I know it was probably an exaggeration, but meh) Hard, slowly drawn lines have a habit of being forced and too dark. (In my experience anyway.. which.. is not a lot, haha.) Practicing quick lines and shapes helps a lot.

"I only draw cute girls" I feel like I just found my new pickup line. I like the uneven squares and triangle background, it's very late 80's- 90's. Having "saved by the bell" flashbacks right now. (Not like I'm admitting having watched that or anything 😏) Funny you just did a video. I was at the first day if the Epcot art festival yesterday thinking about you. Lot of experienced artists, many in their 30s to 60s, and they all have the same insecurities as you occassionally do. It's comforting but also upsetting how anxiety and self doubt are so universal.

A personal tip when it comes to dark paper and metallics, which may or may not help you, is to go for a almost cold sad feel. Things like rain and almost luminescent types of backgrounds like cities also look very nice. For characters a more closed off pose and a sketchiness mimicking movement looks gorgeous. The reason this works is because a dark background will give off a cold feeling and if you give a closed off pose the sketchiness can give it a look of movement mimicking a almost chaotic feeling like a mental aspect of the whole thing. Usually I prefer to focus on the eyes the most and make them hazy towards the end without pupils making them deep and sad. You don't want to add to much shading or focus because metalics add a lot of depth depending on the light. I hope this helps in some way. I just thought I'd share my personal tips.

We just finished doing a scratch board assignment in my art class which is really similar to this as you scratch away the white parts in the drawing and you have to space the lines apart to create tone differences. If anyone wants a challenge kinda like this I really recommend it! It made me think about where the highlights were instead of the shadows and honestly made me a better artist.

Kudos! I’m terrible at guys! Maybe I lean toooo much into the “guys are more angular,” thing. The proportions also throw me. I keep hearing shoulders are equal to two head lengths, but they look WAY too big to me. Maybe I’m going to end up drawing what a friend refers to as “noodley bois,” but, honestly, the proportions just make more sense to me! I want to learn to draw from life before trying to stylize, so I guess... the less brawny the better for now. 😅 I guess knowing I have an issue is the first step, so I can work specifically on drawing guys. Then when that makes sense, I can work on the very broad “two head length,” shouldered guys. We shall see!! Best of luck with whatever you need to work on, or feel you should focus on to continue your art journey! 🌷

Honestly! Ever since I found her channel, I’m always so pleased when I see a video pop up. I can draw while I watch her work, but I always do afterward. It’s like... warm and gentle encouragement sort of. Her being honest about her enthusiasm for some things, while others are HARD, that’s so good to hear. 😭 I get easily frustrated by what I feel I’m really not good at, at any given moment. But she sort of reminds me that you don’t have to be great at everything all at once. In fact, for most people, that’s impossible near the beginning of any art journey. 🤷🏻‍♀️ She really does have this sense of brightness about her; you get the feeling she’d be a very good friend. What might’ve helped for you is taking a reference image, converting it to grayscale, and then inverting the “colors.” Could possibly help train your eyes and head!
