Un fucking believable that they would in essence sabotage their own record just to essentially haze (fuck with) the new guy. Baffling.

It distracts from the rest of the music. In most metal, the bass is used to support the guitars and fill up the mid channel of the mix. Sure, some outliers exist (ie: some really prog stuff), but 99% of the time the bass just mimics the guitar an octave lower. When the bass plays an octave below the guitar, it needs to blend in with the guitars to create a large wall of sound. Bands like Periphery and Meshuggah do this very well. It sounds like there isn't much bass, but if you were to take away the bass the mix would be destroyed.

Coltallic that's totally different dude, yes the bass is too over powering because of the way it's recorded, it's not professionally mixed. Also the Bass follows the guitar riffs completely, most of the time the bass follows the drums and makes its own riffs. I think it depends a LOT on the player. Jason has such a powerful attack, using his entire arm rather than just his hand and wrist, creating a very powerful tone you just can't reproduce with fingers. Then again, you certainly can't reproduce a good player that uses their fingers if you use a pick. I always liked Jason's style and tone a lot. I think he was an excellent follow-up to Cliff. He didn't try to emulate his sound, but brought his own style to the table. At least, that's how I feel.

I've read somewhere that the lack of really audible bass relates to the fact that Justice is the first album since the death of their previous bassist Cliff Burton. It's also kinda related to the subjects this album deals with, stuff like government lies, injustice and madness. The lack of bass makes the sound "flat", which relates to the "depth" in the subjects (lies are just the "surface", whereas the truth is in the depths. Madness lurks in the depths of the mind). I think it's a cool idea.

I love hearing the bass on this but I also "get' what they were going for at the time. People have to remember that guitar amps were getting more brutal sounding and the palm mute technique was changing the heaviness of metal to a new level of chunky brutality and what they achieved on this album was, at the time, THE heaviest, tightest relationship of guitar and drum syncopation in metal. Anthrax and Exodus were close behind with their stuff and every metal guitarist friend of mine and myself were trying to make the most heavy chunk we could get out of a palm mute and we all had the bass section of our amps cranked!!. It was a fucking ground breaking album and countless bands were inspired to make themselves sound heavier because of it. That said I dont pick sides, bass would be good but i like it not there as well and for the time i think they made the right decision to keep it down in the mix...its a remarkable album in terms of the precision syncopated tightness that can be achieved between metal guitar and drums and really the low end frequencies can be achieved by upping the bass eq on a guitar amp which musically isnt considered proper but this is metal and they were charting new territory so they chunked the fuck out of the guitars and Lars' kick drum sound on that album changed metal drums forever! It cant be overstated how important that album was to the metal world. I remember nearly crying when they won the Grammy for "one". Metal was considered low class, unimportant and basically shit music by the mainstream pop loving dicks out there and here we were..metal had finally reached the level of respectability it deserved and it was fucking glorious! Also i think this album was the first one to really kind of expose how little the bass guitar was 'needed' in thrash metal back then and maybe started the trend to pick on metal bassists as sort of unneeded and also why a lot of bassists in metal bands were just guitarists filling in the position. Its not until sometime after that album that metal bassists began to try and make a niche for themselves in metal and you get Cannibal Corpse and Atheist and Cynic where ALL the instruments played vital roles and technical metal bass playing started to become the norm. Even in metal styles like thrash which is identified by the tight relationship the guitar and drums have has changed now and thrash bassist have upped their game. Cant forget Megadeth's Peace Sells and Dave Eleffson's bass on that...excellent tone and playing and if you didnt have Daves galloping opening bass line it wouldnt be the same but Metallica? They reinvented what metal could sound like and theyre gods for it...recognize!! The one thrash band from that time I do remember really having a strong bass presence on every song and album was Overkill. D.D Verni had and still has godly bass tone even though he was following the guitar parts exactly like most thrash bands, he had an undeniable, immediately recognizable bass tone that was clearly heard in the mix and Overkill wouldnt have stood out as much as they did without it!

More people need to have the opportunity to hear this. Its a crime.

Just because the original had no bass doesn't mean that it should be louder than everything else. This just sounds like an audio version of a bass cover

This is my absolute favorite pissed of Metallica album and these bass riffs are f*cking legendary! It is a travesty that no one can hear them! This is like hearing it for the very first time!!! Jason had the fire and metal running in his veins!! I love Jason!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
