Mesa sounded best to me. I still have anxiety from letting my 100 watt Marshall and hot rodded Gibson go. THAT sounded best!

I did that too, back in 2008. I always feel this pang in the pit of my stomach when I think of that gear I had to let go. Especially that shoddily modded Marshall that sounded like nothing else I've ever been able to get my hands on. But times were rough and had to let it go.

I agree, mesa sounds great. I love the BDH (excuse if it not the right name, still a "new" guitarist) but the BDH sounds great to me, it's got a bit more grit? I think is the right word, may not be the exact tone or close enough but that extra bit of grit to it makes it sound a bit heavier but that's my opinion! Again, I agree though! Mesa sounds really good 😁

The Mesa sounded closer to the album compared to the other amps but both 5150s were pretty tight as well

​@@davu9027 yeah, it does. The IIC+ only started being used around Master Of Puppets IIRC. Ride The Lightning I believe was a JCM800 with a Tube Screamer and a whole lotta reverb (you can still find pictures with the gear in the background that they took back in the day). I gotta say though the Mark IV might be the best amp Metallica has ever used (it was mostly on the black album and you can really tell it's a mark IV because of its incredible unique high gain compared to the IIC)

@@lathrin yeah correct, i mean it's weird because on some poster of Mesa Boogie dated 1983 it says Metallica started using them, but could be just for live, not for the studio. I know, it wasn't a JCM800 though, it was a JMP 2203 (which basically is almost a JCM800 but the old model) with a Tube Screamer. Personally my favourite tone, eventhough i dream of Boogies everyday for the past 6 years, i would kill to have a Mark series amp, even a Rectifier, but it isn't the specific Tallica sound

@@lathrin also, yes, the Mark IV was around but it isn't confirmed they used it for anything other than leads. Bob Rock said the only amp that he used for the rythms was his Crunch Berries Mark IIC+ which is a Simul Class i believe, paired with a Jose Moded Marshall plexi to have some of the missing mids

1, 2 and 3 in that order. The 66o6 and BDH III just have a tiny bit too much gain for the individual notes. But the chords are meaty. I'm not to sure on the Nolly though...

BDH 5159 felt the most like RTL to me. Just needs to be drowning in reverb and I bet it'd work alright. Archetype Nolly gave me Black Album vibes funny enough

Yeah for a stock preset it’s a decent start. I didn’t add any pre or post eq. With a few small eq tweaks, like you mentioned, cutting some low end, I think you could have a great tone

Eh I still think bias fx 2 sounds better. Dunno why that one gets the most hate out of all the amp sims on the market when it’s literally the most realistic sounding one, like the integrated bias amp evh 5150 smokes neural dsp and stl tones plugins that people swear by but I had to do so much tweaking and eq to get useable tones out of them whereas bias is straightforward and has amazing tones right out of the gate.

Agreed. These are the stock presets. I did not change a single parameter for the sake of comparing them as they are. When I record lessons, covers, etc. I do back the gain down quite a bit from the initial setting
