I saw this show in Memphis TN that year and remember this bit scared the sh*t out of everyone, people leaving their seats for the doors, having security tells us to go back to our seats it's all part of the act. Looking back now it's was really cool but in the moment we all pissed ourselves.

They were planning to destroy the stage lightly, they weren't planning to have a couple to (real) injuries, they weren't expecting the stage to light on fire, and after the incident, the concert continued for about 45 minutes. Something this video faile to show is that 4-5 minutes after the incident, lamps were lowered onto the stage so that the show could continue.

for someone who works event production, #1, excellently choreographed production and quite the symbol of how Metallica never actually lost money from their fans pirating their songs. #2 this is without a doubt the dumbest thing ever, desensitizing fans from what could have been an actual emergency on stage. working this industry, we all share stories and videos of why our craft is absolutely imperative to safety, from the electricians, to the rigging crew, to scaff builders and carps. its insulting to see a production make fun of literally what has happened before, with deadly consequences.
