As a long time Metallica fan, I'm kind of split when it comes to Lars. He made great songs, but he can be a shit drummer at times. He was an absolute douche in the 2000's with the whole Napster thing and he never really recovered from that. Doesn't help that he isn't the most cheerful guy, like Hetfield and Hammet are. He can be super grumpy at times. Granted, he has been doing two jobs, being their manager for a long time as well, which is he why he is credited on almost all songs. Him and James own the band, he ran the whole deal behind the scene for years. Again, I am a long time fan and don't hate the guy, but he made it easy to hate him. If you watch Dave Grohl's What Drives Us, you see a much happier Lars, much more likeable. Short, but nice interview!

@@Yvolve Lol, an absolute douche for protecting your art. You've clearly never made something from scratch and had it stolen. Lars was the face of that lawsuit but make no mistake, there were at ton of other people involved in it as well. He was fighting for the rights of the little guys that don't have a huge following and struggle as artists. Looking back, he was right on point :)

One of the things Lars Ulrich did great was shine the spotlight on his drumming... he wasn't a technical drummer like Dave Lombardo of Slayer, but he would throw tangents w/ the beat to make the listener pay attention to him. In later years, he got lazy and complacent, especially in the 90's... his drums on 'St. Anger' in 2003 was a disaster... Lars did redeem himself somewhat in 2016 w/ 'Hardwired to self-destruct'.

The song is about Nuclear warfare. During this time the Cold War was still going on between Democracy and Communism. It was a statement about how countries with Nuclear weapons can essentially blow each other up, and destroy the world in the process because the US and Russia both had nuclear weapons.

'Ride the Lightning' was an iconic record for Metallica - recorded in 1984 in Denmark, their 2nd album was self-produced and completely lacking any commercial ambition, which made it musically pure... This was Metallica that had something to say & were on fire 🔥🤘🤘 and is my personal favorite record of ALL time!!! I just felt like Metallica in the 90's and beyond just had little to say & something to sell... and that's not what u want from an artist. I remember Lars Ulrich defending the 'Load' album saying they would be 'selling out' if they tried making another 'Master of puppets'... and musically he was right, cos Metallica tried to make a thrash metal album w/ 'St. Anger' in 2003, and it was terrible! U can't make Metallica what they once were in their past, sadly... That being said, Slayer were just as good making records after 2000 as they were in the 80's... and bands like Anthrax, Death Angel, Kreator, Exodus, Testament... actually sounded BETTER than their 80's albums.
