Mike Portnoy: I would rather watch somebody like Lars Ulrich on stage than one of these technical drummers that can do quadruple paradiddles at 240bpm. To me, that's boring. Who cares about that?" I'd rather be entertained and go to a show and watch a drummer and have somebody that makes me actually smile. So I don't judge drummers based on their technical ability; I judge them based on the overall package and what they bring to the music they're part of. And what Lars brings to the music of METALLICA is absolutely invaluable. So I could care less if his meter might be slightly up and down, or if his fills are slightly sloppy; I don't care about that. To me, there's way more to being a good drummer than precision and technique."
@OskPnk6 жыл бұрын
Most people who listen to music don't give a fuck about the drums or if it plays well or plays badly, people are only interested in what music makes them feel, all those who hate Lars Ulrich do it because they heard another criticize him, but in the end they don't know a shit about playing drums they're just assholes repeating what others say, metallica music is impressive, that's why they have sold millions of albums, they are legends and considered one of the best band of all time and yes that includes Lars Ulrich

I like this song even more now because of this. I didn't realise there was so much drumming in this. It's a fast song even though it doesn't seem like it at times because it doesn't have the style of drumming on the likes of fight fire with fire or battery. So to have that much drumming in a song at that tempo makes me impressed by Lars' performance here.

100% Agree. The F ... king Lars Bashing started after the Napster affair in 2000. Before that, no one criticized the game of Lars and most of the critics who are badly criticized are not even drummers or drummers who have no talent or jealous. On the contrary. He is highly respected by his peers and artists. He influenced a whole generation of drummers in the 90s, including myself 29 years ago with AJFA & Black Album albums. On AJFA, it was the Trash / Heavy style, very technical, progressive, fast, double kick and on the Black Album, it's more like Heavy style, more simple but powerful, melodic, a Live feeling, external percussion additions, change Birch for the Maple but it's mostly his sound of his drum kit used for this album that is still considered today as one of the best in the world of Rock / Metal and he went to prosperity with the software The Black Album for electronic drums or as a plug-in on Pro Tools and others. A Gretsch USA Custom Maple consisting of 2 Bass Drum 24x18'', 4 Toms X-Deep 12, 13, 14 & 16'', one Floor 18x16'' and a Tama (Vintage) Pro-Custom Bell Brass 14x6.5''. For cymbals, he had a Sabian AA Rock 14 '' Hi-Hat, Zildjian A's 16, 17 & 18 '' Medium & 17'' and 18'' Medium-Thin Crashes, a 20'' China Boy Low behind and a 19'' China Boy High from the front. In live, he had a Tama Artstar II custom white snow with all the black hardwares. He had changed size of Toms for 10, 12, 14 & 16 '' to have 2x2 '' of difference of tones more pronounced, more prominent between each. It was a great choice. We all know that his beautiful years are past but at 56, he is still in shape, to do more than 2:30 hrs show. Their latest albums are in reference between MOP & AJFA. technical, speed, double kick and they play 6 to 8 news plus their classics. And also, yes, I agree with A Khalid that Lars and more than just a drummer. Like the rest of the band, he is a good entertainer on stage with the public, strolling between each song near the fans with a smile not to mention that he is one of the main composers and credited on all titles. He also participates in the creation of solos with Kirk and production with James. And finally, they have sold nearly 300 Million albums (studio and live) including 70 Millions just for the Black Album, 37 years of career, 38 this summer and the current tour looks a lot like the BA with dates that add to each week. Long life Lars and thank you for your very good musics..!

Lars was nearly Bonham-esque during this era from '94-'99. Today, i dont think that he is incapable of those same performances, i just think that his priorities are elsewhere, he lacks the drive to be a great drummer that he once had. Hell, Buddy Rich was a bad-ass straight into his 80's, and Lars could be too, but he needs to take a few years off from drumming to find his groove again, IMO.
@roncriswell26854 жыл бұрын

Ron Criswell have you seen Buddy Rich play? He was every bit as athletic in his playing style as lars, and he chomped cigars and didn’t exercise, whereas Lars did. Lars isn’t injured, he’s in good health, and could elevate his playing to a new level if he wanted to, but the desire to do so isnt there anymore. Can’t say that I blame him. I’d get tired of playing too if I had to play Master of Puppets for the 10,000th time

His tempo is uneven here, but I don't really care so much. Somehow I think he could be more even in his tempo if he focused more on it. I'm keen to think that he is less talented than many drummers because his uneven tempo but when I think it might be just because he doesn't focus on it then I question that. However if that's the case it's still weird to me that he doesn't focus on it considering you are suppose to handle the beat as a drummer. It's like he has skipped that part and maybe that's because he started a band at such a young age that didn't throw him out cause of his beat fluctuations and that band became very successful. He never went through that stage of being kicked out cause of he couldn't keep the beat which I imagine is the normal thing to happen for those drummers who either quit drumming or learn from it and try to straighten up the beat. His band mates were too accepting I guess and in that case we should perhaps blame James and Kirk too for Lars sloppy handling of the beat.
