I honestly think he's struggling a bit, he still sounds good for the most part but his voice has taken a beating post 2020. They also edit their live performances in post quite a bit, you can check the livestream version of lux aeterna and the version they uploaded on this channel - James was struggling and missing notes and they corrected everything (kinda how the fixed the fixxxer (no pun intended) performance where james was having a really tough time)

OK, just... when the hell did Metallica become this smooth-sounding?? And I'm saying this with amazement. It's like, it's not even the same damn band that screams "MASTER! MASTER!" at your face. James and Rob are point which is no surprise at all, of course, but then we've got Kirk taking so much care in what he's doing, Lars showing how to dial back, playing some simple yet perfect fills... Metallica has such a worshipping fan-base because of their plain honesty. Even after being absolute legends, kicking ass for more than 4 decades, they don't hesitate one bit before saying - "Metallica does cover songs 'cause it's fun" That's how they started too. They're not at all uptight about it or ashamed about it, but instead celebrate the bands and songs that inspired them!

Look at the dramaturgy of the songs's list-it's the same (Fast one, two longer ones, the ballad copying the "One", the fast one, the middle tempo one, the instrumental one... ) Look at the booklet artworks, it's the same black&white style and also the same serious faces's expressions...

Something about this style of music that seems to really fit Kirk's playing. The Thin Lizzy cover as well! He's a more expressive player than he gets credit for. I want to hear more of it in Metallica's songs.

I totally agree with you about Kirk, it’s kind of a restrained but very focused blues solo. I think he expressed himself better in this solo than anything he has done in the past 20 years. He will always love his wah pedal but when he lays off it his playing is so much tighter and precise.

I only just discovered this through the comments on a UFO upload. This is probably my favorite UFO song, even though I'm a Schenker fan. Paul Chapman is a great player too--more understated than Schenker, but always giving the songs what they needed, and the Chapman era of UFO had some of their best songwriting. I'm not surprised that Metallica are fans of this song, because the guitar harmonies in "To Live is To Die" remind me of this song. Great cover, even if it leaves out some of the haunting guitar melodies of the original.
