Remember this is just part of the story, right at the very beggining of Jason comming in the band, James used to hang at Jason´s house when he got in the band, they got really close, they hated some stuff on him but eventually had to step backward and pay respect to the man. The full story of Jason and Metallica is full of stuff, not only "Jason was Hazed, bad James and Lars", but a lot of things he gave to the band, apreiation and even a time when Jason fucked up with the band and eventually became the pebble on Lars´s shoes in the mid 90´s.

I met James and Jason in Toronto on a cold winter night. My brother won tickets from a radio show for a small venue concert (very rare) and after the show James and Jason came walking out the back doors. We were trying to flag a taxi but instead we got our concert tickets signed and what a great laugh we had. James was sooo funny and Jason was super nice dude. I still have my autographed concert ticket but my brother Paul Pal passed away 3 yrs ago. My older brother was hardcore Metallica fan and still to this day it was the HIGH LIGHT of our young lives! I read in a book about the history behind Metallica’s songs that Jason was the last guy to audition. Someone has contacted Lars and before his audition the guy described Jason as “the business.” Yes he absolutely was. 100% metal and no one could have taken Cliff’s place as well as Jason. They essentially had their biggest fan as their bass player and instead of seeing that as a huge positive they punished him for it.

Let me tell you a story about Jason Newstead. Somebody broke into my house and stole both of my basses. A few days later I get a call from Jason's first wife Judy asking if I was gonna be home because they wanted to stop by for a visit. I said sure, come on by. They both show up at the door and Jason has a bass in his hand. Jason told me he heard what happened and he knew how it felt because the same thing happen to him while he was in Flotsam. He handed me the Bass and said this is yours. That man is Good People. He is always approachable and he talks to the fans when the rest of the band wont. Kirk used to tell me the jokes they would play on him all the time. When Jason announced that he was quitting the band I understood and never questioned it.

Jason never stopped being METALLICA especially in late 90s when the band was doing acoustic medley and that sort of thing which fans never wanted. He always expressed the soul of METALLICA through his attitude and amazing performance wearing the band’s T-shirt. That way he kept sending messages to us and THEM so that the band wouldn’t lose its identity. I was lucky to see his performance as METALLICA and sometimes I’m frustrated that what he did isn’t fully appreciated by fans and them.

I'm gonna go ahead and call complete bullshit on Jason choosing to only follow the guitar. If you listen to Jason's audition tapes (5 songs over two try outs) you hear a LOT of fills Cliff never did, and a lot of stuff Jason approached differently (that he never did again; fills or alternate approaches). If you listen to the bass lines in Garage days you hear that same energy and creativity from Jason. With the above two early audio examples of Jason's potential, I find it far fetched he regressed writing and playing creative bass lines. Especially when you add in the hazing Tallica fully admits to and bass level shaft on AJFA. Cliff shredded and had a voice within the band. Shame they never gave Jason a chance to do the same.

That isn't exactly what he means. Bass players can play with the guitar player or play against them. They can build tension or harmonize. Jason largely followed the guitar lines exactly. That is what James is saying. He was used to Cliff who approached his playing in an entirely different way than Jason. Neither way is more "right" than the other. I think jealousy is the keyword there. They were grieving, but they “chose” to grieve the way they did. They were not forced to do so. They chose to take it out on him as an easy target and that is immoral. I think they definitely were jealous of jason‘s joy and energy to play in Metallica, because they had obviously lost that same passion. To be around him every day was a stark reminder of that reality. They could have learned from him, owned their problems and faults, but were too cowardly to do so. A lot of good lessons in there. It’s a crying shame they didn’t realize their mistakes in time to save the relationship because it would be something to see what Metallica would be today with Jason’s growing influence. Sadly, We’ll never know.

Jason always was the real focal point on stage in the heyday. When he had his shaved head on the sides and running around like a nut, he personified Metallica’s presence on stage. Absolutely stood out to me. Lars is stationary obviously and always active. Kirk is always seemingly in his own little world ripping riffs and of course James is the lead voice and guitarist but Jason was that dark side, deep guy on stage and the fact that he was the bass, the tones that hold it all together, made him a huge part live.

It was ego and the dealing with Cliff's passing. When cliff died they didn't really have time to mourn. They had shows lined up and decided to keep the tour going. So when Jason entered the band they were saddened and upset that their buddy was gone and took it out on him. Maybe as a way to cope with his death. Also they were headlining shows and made their first music video with One. So their ego also got the best of them. Unfortunately Jason had to endure that and ultimately couldn't take it anymore.

In retrospect, Jason had a lot of class that most musicians lack to show respect to the fans. I will never forget the scene from their Black album documentary where Jason was boxing up some food from the spread to take back to the hotel to eat later. He said he had plans for the money he made rather than blow it on excess like most rock stars. I was impressed and it stuck with me. That represented true Metallica fans…and James sat to the side making fun of his attitude about it. He might as well have made fun of his entire fan base there. Guess what bro? That’s the real world. I think that scene summed up the difference in the two: the difference in a life of gratitude and one of entitlement. After that I understood what Jason had to put up with and lost respect for James. We should pay close attention to what we find ourselves laughing at. It says more than we may realize about us.

If Metallica listened to early Flotsam and Jetsam, they would have had more respect for him. Doomsday for the Deceiver was exceptional. (And James would not have been able to play the songs properly, a technical issue of how he held his guitar back then). I was at the last show with jason and Flotsam, and I remembered thinking it’s a good opportunity, but they won’t allow him to write much, it will be a waste of talent. Yet he has. Again, the only people still whining 20 years later over Jason and James' drama are Jason's fanboys. I'm questioning if you even watched the video above you. Jason didn't work for James, and James didn't work for Jason. The agreement in Metallica was you weren't supposed to be credited for any side projects and Jason didn't agree so he left. Years later both parties, while not together are still on good terms with each other. We as fans should be admiring that and refrain from being stuck in 2003.

​@Lavern James collaborated with a couple other artists beforehand but his name was no where near those records, going uncredited. The other members never really collabed on their own either. Say what you will but an agreement is an agreement. I think you need to remember that the entire band were sick of each other during the time Jason left and his exit just made it worse, it's not like he was the only one getting shit. But as both Lars and Jason put it, his departure was a necessary sacrifice for them to mature and kill their demons.

For me.. Jason is my favorite Metallica bass player. Not the most talented I know, but he was so passionate. He worked his ass off and gave everything he had for the band. Live, he was just perfect. That guy made me want to play an instruments and play metal on stage. I chose to play guitar, but it was Jason Newsted who made me want to play music.

The black album was great, because Bob Rock was the man who finally told Lars if he wanted to be great then he’d have to make it about the song instead of about his show off drumming. Some Metallica fans give the band crap for the black album because they felt like the band sold out. I simply think the band came into their own, and did something original for once, instead of trying to make master of puppets the third time over. The black album was a huge creative risk for them and it paid off. The other metal bands were never brave enough to take that risk and that is why they’re all watching from the backseat. Nothing wrong with sticking to making the same album over and over, just don’t complain when your fan base stays the same forever.

I remember reading an article on Jason when he got his Sadowsky basses. They had to waterproof the pickup cavities because after the shows, sweat would pour out of them and it would end up shorting out the electronics. He was a beast live.

I mean, Jason following rhytm is what bass does in this music...Jason knew his place and paid respect...this is no funk so bass plays 80%of the song....I know I will be crucified after this but when you exclude songs where Cliff plays solo, then he is regular bass player...but on every album he got a sonh to play whatever he wants, he used effects that were unimaginable in that time, did solos live... For me, Jason was perfect fit

I think what he means is that when you play bass you aren't supposed to play it like a guitar. When I first started, I played bass and I did that and years later I realized I was not bass player material and switched to guitar as far as instruments. This is because I would copy the guitar exactly and that's not the purpose of bass. You have to just play root notes and groove along with the drums. Think Steve Harris or Ian Hill where they compliment the guitar but don't try to play the melody. If you want to play the actually melody (as I discovered I did), you have to switch to guitar. Bass is like, you have to sort of step aside and let the guitar player do his flashy thing and acknowledge that you are happy being in the background and not being heard. That is, we know the bass is there and we definitely know when it is not there but you can't really hear it in rock because the guitar drowns it out. It's a thankless job! lol

It's all about discretion. Sometimes it is better to double up on the guitar parts but other times it's better to come up with your own parts that lock in with the rhythm section but doesn't copy anything note for note.

James said basically the same thing about Ron McGovney, that he never contributed and only followed what James was doing. Although to me it seems like Jason did contribute at least a little to the songwriting process. And they knew from day one he used a pick, so why hire the guy if that was such a sticking point?

This is true of most of Metallica's songs back then and why it was super thick. I can't recall any bass line where Cliff followed Lars but I haven't listened to every single bass line isolated either. Perhaps there are some but I doubt a huge chunk. Bass always being with the drummer is boring.

@@andrewirick5620 this. Metallica's sound in the 80s was all bass following the guitar save for some instrumentals and very few parts. There was a little more dissociation in the 90s and Jason does an excellent job in Load for example.

It's strange that after all this time, James, Lars and to a certain degree Kirk, still haven't got the balls to admit that they were wrong. They seem to cruise along on a cloud of smugness that is only punctuated when one of them has a personal crisis with alcohol or drugs. Then, they want your sympathy. Not going to happen chaps. I loved Metallica in the 80s and 90s but it stopped when they forced Jason out. Rob is a fantastic bassist, but the whole sports top, faces and squatting around just don't fit.
