Cuban cigars, eyeliner makeup and pimp suits. That's not the Metallica we all know. But the music was solid and very creative. As for St. Anger that was a band that went thru hell for 3 years and was desperately trying to reform and it was a big moment to see them achieve it and I do love the drop C tuning on the guitars. No solos and the music wasn't that great but ut was heavy and the return of Metallica.

Your point is well taken friend. But as one that has been all about Metallica since the beginning, let me just say that as time rolls along load and reload are albums that are aging quite well. They will get there due in the long run for the reasons you said. This is a great song and both albums are packed with greatness. The loyalty some fans have to pre Black work is due to the fact that back then Metallica wasn't what they are in this clip. In this clip they are the mighty Metallica. The metal band that is at the AMAs. Winning MTV awards. The whole thing. They were the biggest band in the world in most aspects. Friend, they didn't start out that way. They were not on tv. They made no videos. They were not winning awards. Only metal heads really knew what Metallica was and how great they were. It was like they belonged to the metal movement. They backlash post Black records recieved was based more than anything on the fact that Metallica blew up and became a huge international sensation. They were no longer just a metal band representing that particular genre. That's why so many have a problem with this era Metallica. But don't worry friend,those voices are getting weaker and weaker as time goes on. What you said about this music WILL become the prevailing thought as it relates to post Black Metallica.

Johnlocke666 james blew his voice recording death magnetic, and since then he's been singing with a clean voice, also he hasn't drunk like he used to pre 2000 for 13-14 years now, big part of his 88-92 voice came from alchohol, but he suffered minor vocal damage in 1993 and started taking vocal lessons after that, yes he wasn't singing pre 1993, he was screaming and ripping through the lyrics, then he changed his vocal style, that's the main thing about the change of his vocals, he did so because they play live much more than any other band, so he needs to preserve his voice, if you listen to him talk nowadays, you can hear that voice is deeper than ever before, thus he can probably sing about 2x times as powerful than back in the late 80s early - 90s and on ...and justice for all and the black album, but he preserves his voice. Anyways the my favorite james hetfield vocal era was 1985 to late 1987, when he could hit all kind of notes and he didn't need back vocals at all :)

heard he had voice problems in 91 and 93. also during that period he started with singing lessons. after 93/94 he sung mostly clean. but he still had it if he wanted to and was rested enough. look at last carress/so what live in 96 @ mtv. he pushes through it like the old day. suprisingly after getting sober he got massive problems withs his live performances 2003-2008 was just a shadow what he used to be.since 2009 he got constantly better and in 2014 despite singing a lot lower he has a decend to very good performance level.

Actually, it's quite easy to play for extended periods of time with no wrist fatigue. Kirk used an Eventide Flanger/Autopan for the sound, and it's the 15th fret on the B string bent up a full step, with vibrato.

definitely my least favorite era of metallica. load and reload had a couple good songs, but a lot of horrible ones too. i mean, 2x4, ronnie, slither, bad seed, etc...those were some horrible songs. i mean, its like, wtf where they thinking? i wish they would of just followed up black album with a death magnetic type album, with the black album production quality. imagine how badass death magnetic or hardwired would of been back then with james black album voice, and lars drumming. the production on hardwired was really good, and james did a good job with the vocals, but he cant sing like he used to obviously.
