imo, jason was an essential part of metallica. i got to know metallica when he was still around, and the metallica with him will always be the definitive version of metallica to me. rob is a great bass player and he forced the band to do lots of rare songs live again which i thank him for, but he hasn't that "thing" that jason had. jason was just insane and a real part of metallica, rob is just their bass player, and never will be more.

I believe the thing you are referring to is the fact that Jason was a metal maniac, driven by sheer passion for aggresive music. Sure, Rob played in ST prior to joining Metallica, but can you really compare it to Flotsam and Jetsam in terms of aggression?

When james left I thought the song was gonna be bad cause kirk was gonna be the only guitarist. Since he was lead I thought he couldn't do songs by himself, he really surprised me, the whole song guitar wise was perfect with Kirk by himself

auyls Kirk seems to be a pretty solid rhythm guitarist. I mean he’s had to match James note for note all these years when he’s not soloing. You got to have rhythm before you can solo.

I had an opportunity to see Metallica twice with Jason when I was fourteen and nineteen eighty-seven and again when I was seventeen and 2000. I only went to see them once with Rob in 2004. I couldn't believe at how disappointed I was when seeing them in 2004. That's not to say they were bad because they weren't. They actually played a couple of deep cuts like Blackened and The God that Failed and when they did frantic and Saint anger Kurt improvised a couple of really cool solos on those songs which are really dug. But there was a special intensity that Jason brought to the band Live and Rob just doesn't Force the other members to come up to his level

Yeah, actually i too caught some mistakes, but its weird since James sings at the same time and Kirk, since he's a lead player, is supposed to be better guitiarist, technically speaking. I guess thats shows how hell of a guitar player James is. And to be fair, playing Whiplash is a nightmare for me, i just can't alt pick the main riff in time without missing string every 10 seconds.
