what did you do to get your downpicking this good? I'm currently learning the song and still strugle to play it in the original speed

There is nothing else to do but practice. I started slowly, at a speed that I was capable of downpicking just barely. I think it was around 80% of the original speed. I kept practicing at that speed until I could do it comfortably. Then I increased the speed to 85% and I kept practicing until I could do that comfortably. Then 90%, 95%, 100%, all the way until 115%. That's all there is to it. Repeat, repeat, repeat. All decent DAWs can change the speed of the song without changing the pitch. If you need a free DAW, check out Audacity. By the way, I'm pinning this for anyone else that wanted to ask the same thing.

I think it took me about 4-5 months. Don't worry, it's different for everyone. No one's the same so we can't expect the same results. Some people will get it faster than others. Keep at it and you'll get it.

People who say it's fake merely because of the speed should think a bit better. He is downpicking at about 245bpm, while that's super super fast, it has been done before by other famous guitarists. It's not an unattainable superhuman kind of speed. It's a loads of practice, discipline and dedication kind of speed. For instance look up a live version of the song Last December by Iced Earth. It has a downpicking part near the end at 130bpm 16th notes, so thats equivalent to 260bpm with 8ths. There is even a video of a guy on youtube downpicking at 300bpm, but he obviously snorted some sort of stimulant. Anyway still, the only reason people can do this is because they worked at it REALLY hard for a REALLY long time. And that's why this guy has my respect! The thing I'm actually most amazed about is that you seem to hit the strings pretty hard as well. Most people playing that fast are doing a tiny physically economical (so to say) motion, but you're still mashing quite hard it seems. I wish I could do that! I can do it at this speed with gallops but downpicking just strains me so much more.

I am not sure why people doubt this. When I was learning this song I sped it up and tried playing it. Then, when I played it at normal speed it seemed easier to pull off. Occasionally I would play it sped up and get pretty damn close to pulling it off so I believe the dude can play it this well at 115%

You're playing the intro riff wrong, just to let you know. It is played up at the tenth fret power chord and uses on the the Low E string on the plan muted walk down. Ik it does say it on most tabs, but it you watch them play it live you can see. No hate, it was awesome!

Personally, I like it when artist's tab things out by ear (unless they are terrible at it) because when they do so, they usually give it their own little creative touch, like in the bridge/solo or whatever u want to call it. Cursed used slides instead of what Metallica originally did, I think they used bends or bend vibratos something like that I'm not a fully fledged musician yet. 3:26 he plays it noticeably different but it still sounds great.
