I was a session player at Music America at the time and got to know Cliff and Kirk. Cliff was such and interesting guy. He would come in to the office at around 3 or 4 in the afternoon before their studio time to hang and talk with Paul the owner and I was around a lot at the time. I really liked him a lot. He was a thinker and super passionate about what they were doing. At the time I would say Cliff was the adult of the band... He was kind of an old soul. When we heard he passed it was a huge shock to everyone at MA and the label... horrifying. RIP Cliff.

Cliff didn’t play his first show with Metallica until early 83. So that opening scene on this video of the Stone is 83 and not 82. Minor detail but if you’re going to do a documentary it’s gotta be accurate.

This clearly wasn't made with proper rigorous standards. About 23 minutes in, after the narrator says 'Fade to Black' (a 7-minute song) was seen as selling-out, some guy says by the time 'Ride the Lightning' came out (which was July 1984) the 'term was coined' for the Big Four of Trash. Megadeth released their first album in 1985. No doubt they were playing shows, but I can't believe a band without a record out would be included in a 'Big' anything.

Justice was the peak.... that was a thrash masterpiece. And metal history still agrees. Load and Reload were different but they were supposed to be. Go learn every song on guitar ( I know every song they ever recorded ) and then tell me it sucks. Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me etc. They suck? Get lost... Too many great songs to mention. Metallica sits atop the throne and theres not a close 2nd. They are the OGs. Hate em cuz you aint em.

Kirks solos are all pretty easy honestly once you learn how he plays.. appregios, scales etc. But I'd say probably being able to down pick like Hetfield with the precision and speed and tempo is the most challenging. Takes some time. Anyone can play 1 song but to play 6 in a row and do it right and at the right tempo is no easy task. I love all there stuff but if I had to pick 1 song as a favorite it's Orion.

Nobody has to decide because its already been proven who the true Metallica fans are. Its the fans who were there during the first 3 albums but also stuck with Metallica after the Black album and all through the decades to present day. The Black album was the big turning point. It was the first time Metallica lost so called 'die hard' fans but for every fan they lost, they gained tens of thousands because of the Black album. Metallica had a pretty solid base of loyal fans after the first 3 records but some bailed on the band from the Black album. Who stuck around? The true fans stuck around. They accepted the shift, embraced it and are still here today. Thats a just a fact. Its fan history.

Great Doc. 🤘 I feel back in the early 90's when metal was really putting it's footprint on the mainstream of music, the black album wasn't well received when you compare it to what other metal/new metal artist's were putting out at that time. During an era where bands were pushing themselves to produce louder, heavier and faster than their previous albums, Metallica slowed down which turned off the true die hard metal fans. Then they followed it up with load and re-load which turned into two albums that were a Load of crap (pun intended) in most metal fans opinions. To this day I couldn't name one song from the load albums except for Fuel. When St. Anger came out, I felt like the Metallica of old was back. I may be a bit bias because I play the drums but I didn't mind the snare tuning, it was raw and unfiltered and really fits the music and vision they had for that album. Some Kind of Monster docu with an in depth look at creating St. Anger really opened my eyes to their thought process, insight to their personal/professional battles and it gave me a more profound respect for the album than I had previously. 🤘

I was fortunate enough to see them in 86 on the master tour. Playing with metal church. Justice and black were also pretty awesome too, but after that I couldn't take it anymore lol couldn't listen to anything new from them until death magnetic. The 90's was a bad time for them especially Hetfield. They seem to have their shit together again though. Good for them for fighting through the shitty times. Will always be my favorite metal band. Ok so i have a few comments.... 1. Load and reload...I think these two albums were just not understood when they were released. Now that those same fans that grew up with Metallica are now iun their 40's and 50's, we can look back and see how much better those albums are then what we gave them credit for at the time. 2. As great as both Cliff and Rob are, Jason is...was...and always will be Metallica's bassist. He fit the band the best. He filled in on backing vocals 10x better than anyone else. HIs energy and love of the music was amazing and infectious, besides just being a great guy. 3. I actually like the idea the guy mentioned towards the end. As much as I love Kirk, personality wise he doesnt have the...force...the influence the band. He just goes with the flow. If you did take him out and put Dave back in, or maybe had both of them in for a new album...that would be amazing. Id also take Lars out, cause honestly...he can barely play nowadays. Put Jason back on bass. Maybe even bring somebody in to help with vocals cause James' voice has been pretty bad lately. Then and only then do I see them making a good album again. That being said, it wont ever happen and I think at this point, Metallica sticking around is just hurting their legacy.
@awallner1
@awallner1 3 ай бұрын
If you do that then you wouldn't have Metallica anymore but a different band. Without James there is no Metallica. He is the musical force behind that band. He has writing credits on almost every song except Clliff's bass song, and even Mustaine himself, in books, has confirmed this. The one song that Mustaine has the most writing credit is Jump in the Fire, but even that song Dave said that James helped him in crafting the finished product.

The difference is Dave was an ass when he was drunk. He sicced his dog on then-bassist Ron McGovney's car (scratching the side of it really bad), poured beer over his bass and equipment/amp which nearly electrocuted him, had a tendency to get physical or violent when drunk or did drugs, was verbally abusive to James and/or Lars, and punched James when he called Dave out on his nonsense. This wasn't the first time he acted like this when drunk or high, and all this happened in *the same day.* James was still emotional about kicking him out the day they did, and Lars always felt really bad about the whole situation, seemingly having the most empathy towards Dave even at his worst. Dave's unprofessionalism was why he had to go.

It's cuz they toured it too long. They should've worked on another record in like 93 after doing just one sort of regular world tour and taking some months off. But hey, they're still living off the money they made on that tour. Everything since has just been bonus

Cliff Burton was Metallica
@_PuppetMaster86
@_PuppetMaster86 3 ай бұрын
Cliff Burton was a *bassist* in Metallica. He was highly influential to James and Lars and put them onto a lot of ideas and different music, but he did not write an entire song. Those duties belonged to the aforementioned writers. Each member brought something to the table that was their own, and it was never one man that did it all. Hell, even if there was, it would be, once again, James or Lars.
