Sounds great! The original took years to grow on me as a teen but I didn’t have the vocabulary to articulate it. I just chalked it up to missing Cliff and not accepting the new guy but I knew it sounded different. This is no doubt an improvement. Very pleased to finally hear this after all these years. Props to whoever made this happen.

when i was a teen i could never figure out why i originally could not finish listening to ajfa compared to rtm or mop no bass i learned to love this record but it seemed so dry cold and angry it goes down so much smoother with bass its not the technical nature of the tunes but the lack of warmth that jason provides. it makes all the other weird choices of production seem normal even lars dixie cup drums sound full and real.

And justice for all started a trend in metal where the bass was cut out of mixes or guitars were overladen because well monkey see, monkey do. It wasn't Jason's Newstead's fault that Metallica wasn't ready to move on from Cliff Burton. They should have just shelved the album until they were actually comfortable letting Jason contribute...which according to both Metallica and Jason never happened. Lars never thought Jason was a good enough musicians to be worthy of playing Metallica songs and Jason decided he'd keep the paycheck.

The problem with this approach is that the kick drum gets lost behind the bass during the 16th note part. That robs it of its power. The 16th note machine gun fire on the kick drum is the most important element of the song aside from the vocal during that part, and this obscures that.

Well that is what ducking is for. It’s a type of compression that allows both sounds to be heard in a mix.

@@juanticimo that doesn't fix the issue (same guy, different profile). Ducking alone doesn't fix the fact that the bass is being masked by the guitar. If you ducked it hard enough that you could finally hear the mids in the mix, you'd have such a massive rise of low frequencies that it would blow speakers and not play nice with compressors on the mix bus.

Am I the only one that hates the drum sound on this album? It always feels so separated from the rest of the other instruments. Like they recorded all the guitars one day and the drums on another day and someone said, "ahh, we'll mix it all together later" but no body tried to make it all fit and compliment each other.

The original mix will always be the best one. And for those of you who are complaining that there is no bass,there is bass you can hear it in some parts clearly but it's been turned down for the majority of the album to make the guitar sound complete without it the guitars would've sounded too thin. All these "And Justice for Jason" remixes are just a bass boost which makes it way too loud,glad they mixed the original version the way they did.
