Based on the movie "Johnny get your Gun". A novel made into a movie & Metallica bought the movie rights to make the video for this song. The movie is available on KZbin for free.

According to Lars, the song wasn't based on the movie, they just used clips of it because it fit the song's theme so well. Then they bought the movie rights outright to avoid royalties.

You know...I hate to be a naysayer on such a momentous occasion, but I can't help myself here. I've been slow to realize that Vin is like that guy who is the last person on earth you want leading you into new experiences. I get that the song "rocks", but dear god...Here is this absolutely gut-wrenching, devastating song to hear for the first time. Sori is there just trying to soak it all in, and here is this guy sitting beside her that is so caught up in his own experience (of a song I'm sure he's heard thousands of times), that he can't even understand that his air-guitar wailing, back-and-forth thrashing, and general physical obnoxiousness could possibly be taking away from her own experience (which, again, is HER FIRST experience of this song in its entirety). I mean, don't get me wrong, the musical composition here is incredible. It kicks ass. And if you've heard the song a thousand times, I don't think you have to sit there like a stone, ponderously, every time you hear it again. But where is the consideration for bringing someone into a new experience - especially your partner? Imagine watching a movie for the first time with someone and they keep talking to you or flashing a light in your eyes over all the important dialogue. That experience seems about as fun as this one. Look, I really enjoy this channel. I started following when it was just in its infancy. I still intend to watch and support it as long as I can. But it shocks me.....shocks me.....how someone who is so intelligent and so adept can also have such an incredible lack of personal perception. It's just baffling.

@@nedrini1387 I think it's just the right amount of constructive criticism, actually. If it was the first time (or the fifth, or tenth...) I wouldn't have even said anything. I want their channel to grow and for them to have success. No one benefits from everyone just keeping quiet about the problems. And, for what it's worth, I don't know how you could honestly watch that and not see it take away from her experience. And I mean, literally, see. You could objectively SEE him move her focus away from the song at points (like during the "landmine" refrain, or when he blasts the volume up at one point). All the people making comments about his behavior isn't just some miraculous coincidence. It's very obvious.

Glad to know you are on the low end of the maturity scale, but then again it is KZbin. Most people with any sense of decency wouldn’t go up to someone and point out their flaws in a three paragraph essay. Why do it on KZbin, but then claim that somehow “it’s meant to help them”? Seems to me that maybe you, since it hurt you so badly, need to be the one to get their priorities in check. Seriously, you wrote a fucking essay attacking someone’s personality over a Metallica reaction on KZbin. Grow up.

One of the most engrossing music videos I’ve ever seen, still, to this day. It is worth a watch. Not just that little segment you looked at. I can’t hear the song alone without my mind putting back everything the guy in the video says. When this came out I was about 17. It grabbed me then, but now as a 46 year old with my own kid, it shakes me. “For democracy, any man would give his only begotten son.” “Mother? Help me mother I’m having a nightmare and I can’t wake up!!!” I have a hard time consoling my own kid when she has a nightmare. Brought me a whole new perspective, as having kids does to most of us. One is based on a Book and later a movie called "Johnny got is gun" synopsis from the wikipedia; " Joe Bonham (Bottoms), a young American soldier hit by an artillery shell during World War I, lies in a hospital bed. He is a quadruple amputee who has also lost his eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to reason, but his wounds render him a prisoner in his own body. As he drifts between reality and fantasy, he remembers his old life with his family and girlfriend (Kathy Fields). He also forms a bond, of sorts, with a young nurse (Diane Varsi) who senses his plight. Eventually, Joe tries to communicate to his doctors, via Morse code by tapping his head, saying "help." He wishes for the US Army to put him in a glass coffin in a freak show as a demonstration of the horrors of war. When told that his wish may be impossible to grant, he responds begging to be euthanized, repeatedly saying "kill me." He ultimately realizes that the Army can grant neither wish, and will leave him in a state of living death. His sympathetic nurse attempts to euthanize him by clamping his breathing tube, but her supervisor stops her before Joe can succumb. Joe realizes that he will never be released from his state of entrapment and he is left alone, weakly chanting, "S.O.S. Help me."

The guy isn't in a coma. He's conscious but he just can't communicate with the world around him and he can't tell what's happening since he couldn't see, hear, or speak. He was awake, trapped inside a body. Like being buried alive in a coffin. One of the lines from the movie is "I don't know whether I'm alive and dreaming or dead and remembering".

The song is based on the 1939 novel 'Johnny Got His Gun', by Dalton Trumbo, which tells the story of a soldier (Joe Bonham) whose body is severely damaged after he is struck by German artillery during World War I. His arms, legs, eyes, mouth, nose and ears are gone and he can not see, speak, smell or hear, but his mind works perfectly, leaving him trapped in his own body. In 1971 Trumb make of that novel a Film, in 1988 the Metallica acquires the rights over the film and they produce the vídeo of One that contains parts of the Film.

Johnny Got His Gun is an anti-war novel published in 1938 (so post WW1 and pre WW2). The novel is a condemnation of the patriotic fervor and horrors of industrialized warfare which characterized the blood letting of the First World War. The story draws on the hideous injuries that many veterans of that war survived with, the advancing medical knowledge and modern weaponry left many men with catastrophic injuries, governments struggled to provide for these men who had sacrificed everything for the glory of their empire and now lived in perpetual horror. It is doubtful that anyone would have truly survived with those exact wounds but the technology existed for them to do so and many did endure some variation or combination of such wounds (blindness, para/quadriplegia, traumatic amputation, hideous facial and head wounds). This song is probably one of the most powerful condemnations of war that exist. As a former intensive care nurse it is also a powerful composition concerning the line between quality of life and the limit medical science can achieve to increase quantity of life.

So like some people allready pointed out, this song is inspired of a Movie called "Johnny got his Gun", a movie about a severly wounded WWI(or 2?) Veteran. He's lost his limbs, half of his face and eyelids and he's deaf and can't speak anymore... But he survived, but is it really considered living in this state?, during the movie, where you have also flashbacks from his live before the war, he begs the nurses to let him die, cause he live in "Absolute Horror" not been able to live or to die( like in the lyrics), he does so by doing morse code, where he keep asking over and over "please, kill me". And the film is all about this difficult conandrum, and the band members where so impressed and moved by the movie when they saw it, that they'e bougth the rights to it and made this song One, with parts of the movie in their clip. Another piece of work to wich the band bought the rights ( i think, not sure on that one), is an old poem thats from the Russian-british Wars, "For whom the bells toll". See, you can love Metal and be cultured!

There were so many ways I wanted to open this comment with about the video...as I have browsed through the many comments, it was kind of surprising to see there were some opposition to Vin's antics through this video, which I think its been discovered what he has as one of his core favorites...but anyways I am opening; well continuing this comment by stating that no truer statement about war was spoken than the one on 21:48!!! Great reaction, thank you so much and congrats on 100K!!!!

One is based on a novel and eventual film adaptation entitled "Johnny Got His Gun", which recounts a travesty of World War 1. The protagonist is caught in a landmine explosion and is essentially dead, except that he can still communicate through Morse Code. Eventually, the only thing he ever says, via Morse, is "PLEASE LET ME DIE!" The unfortunate reality is that so many people suffered such a horrendous fate, to be an empty husk of a man.

Congratulations on 100K! You guys absolutely deserve it. I've been sub'd since about 3K (in your first couple months I guess), and I just want you guys to know how much you mean to me. At first it was just cool to hear such in-depth analyses of religion and philosophy in music. I love the long discussions the songs inspire, and all the knowledge I've gained from them. But I've gotten so much more than that over the past nearly a year. Because of this channel I've grown as a Christian, as a young man, and as possibly a future husband/father. While I certainly don't agree with you on all issues of theology and politics, I agree with a lot; and with what we don't agree on, you give me reason to think deeper about, and re-evaluate, what I believe. If you don't change my mind, you do make my own beliefs more deeply thought out and more well-rounded. Thank you so much, congratulations on your success (and your expanding family), and God bless!
