Okay - he's not the most technically gifted drummer, nor does he have quite as much stamina as perhaps he once did but watching this clip it's so clear that Lars contributes so much more to Metallica than just drumming. Without him they would really struggle when it comes to writing and particulalry arrangement. All you haters out there seem to forget that.

4:23 - 6:30 I LOVE this, it really shows the growth of James and Lars since 'St. Anger.' Lars pointing out a part doesn't sound good dynamically, and instead of to force something like he used to, he shows James the part and says "maybe I can do something better or maybe you do something better." James hears him out, respects his input, but also mentions how he likes what the guitars are doing, Lars agrees and decides that HE needs to change up the part so it sounds good. They met in the middle and made a GREAT part of the song 🤘

Like when Lars has the idea for the big crescendo crashing open, leading into the melodic clean part. It's sort of the opposite to what they're used to but such an effective idea. And James' idea for the trailing lyrics and voice "say goodbyeeeee...." on the outro and how the listener sort of picks that up and continues with it. Excellent ideas and they just MAKE the song.
