You can really tell that James is way more comfortable with Lars making suggestions to help the song writing process. You can also tell that Lars is a bit more sensitive when it comes to suggesting changes. They've both definitely grown from when they wrote St. Anger and constantly argued.

Okay - he's not the most technically gifted drummer, nor does he have quite as much stamina as perhaps he once did but watching this clip it's so clear that Lars contributes so much more to Metallica than just drumming. Without him they would really struggle when it comes to writing and particulalry arrangement. All you haters out there seem to forget that.

Lars is a great songwriter, composer, and occasional drummer. I forget how they phrased it but they said that Lars is the heart and James is the soul (or something like that).

Dude, he IS a very fucking good drummer. I don't need ant George Kollias blasts, Thomas Haake time signatures, nor Brann Dailor fills over Metallica. The guy is one of the moste creative artists ever to have sit behind a kit, therefore he is one of the greatest drummers of all time. Technique is only accessory to innovation. Creative contribution to the world is greatness.

It's like GNR's "Locomotive". It was years till I discovered that song on my CD. I ignored Halo until the internet kept talking about how great it was, and now it's a favorite... but I wouldn't have discovered it until I relistened to the album years from now (probably) if it weren't for the web. Kept thinking about that while watching this video.

I knew Lars had a great mind when it comes to arranging ideas and solving any hiccups in the writing process, but this video has taken my respect for the man up a whole bunch more. What an unbelievably talented songwriter he is and that's just gathered from this one 13min clip- imagine actually sitting in on the entire songwriting and arranging process. Mind blown! Metallica's success is hugely based on their great songs and Lars does all the heavy lifting in that department. His vision and ability to structure songs is second to none in the hard n' heavy genre. Anyone who thinks Lars is just the drummer has no fucking clue about Metallica- instant eod on all the uninformed opinions about his drumming. Suck it haters!

Totally agree. Just shows how music is behind the instruments in the players hearts and heads. For years people have slung shit at Lars, not noticing that he is playing THE SONG, not "just" hitting the drums. He's fucking awesome in both departments. His background growing up surrounded by all kinds of music and art, and being an only child of intellectuals in Denmark totally honed his musical ear and he understand how songs are structured and meet the listener.

I love these making of vids so much. The best part is when you can see some of the best known parts of the song being born in the moment through their ideas on the spot. Like when Lars has the idea for the big crescendo crashing open, leading into the melodic clean part. It's sort of the opposite to what they're used to but such an effective idea. And James' idea for the trailing lyrics and voice "say goodbyeeeee...." on the outro and how the listener sort of picks that up and continues with it. Excellent ideas and they just MAKE the song.

Love this album. Listen to it all the time. Whatever the band members are doing it works. This album is one of my best sources of inspiration and motivation when writing riffs. To each their own. I hope they make more heavy albums like this.

It is clear to see here, Lars LOVED metal before he ever made any... He has really good ears for metal tunes. Very interesting to be a fly-on-the-wall on their process. Art comes from magic and sweat.

Tyler Dokis Actually it's Kirk's second record with no composition credits. The songs for Kill em All were written before he joined the band.

FrozenFire757 True. But at least the Kill em all solos were somewhat good. Most of the solos on this album are ass. Few good ones like in Spit and Halo i'll admit.

José César man never leave Cliff out of the occasion... in an interview Janes said that Cliff taught him about harmonies... Cliff is a musical genius.... it's very unfortunate that he didn't get the chance to showcase it properly... tho the masterpiece of Orion is more than enough to showcase that.... god bless you Cliff... we still miss u....

I love all of the contributions of various band members! Example - Newstead wrote the music for most of Blackened, same with Hammett for Sandman, etc.

4:23 - 6:30 I LOVE this, it really shows the growth of James and Lars since 'St. Anger.' Lars pointing out a part doesn't sound good dynamically, and instead of to force something like he used to, he shows James the part and says "maybe I can do something better or maybe you do something better." James hears him out, respects his input, but also mentions how he likes what the guitars are doing, Lars agrees and decides that HE needs to change up the part so it sounds good. They met in the middle and made a GREAT part of the song 🤘
