It has always been highly regarded, especially the bass. I saw a list the other day of "every metallica song ranked". Ktulu was #23 out of #115. That seems accurate.

@@sonicxhunters8344 Well, that's a question you'll have to answer for yourself, although I should clarify by saying it's not the whole solo at all...that was an exaggeration. But that run from 4:15-4:20 is definitely D major and it was definitely done on purpose. I personally think it works okay, it gives that part of the lead break a wonky flavour that suits the theme of the track in my opinion.

This track has a very interesting atmosphere. I think it is partly because of the roaring bass melodies that constantly lurk in the background - it gives the whole track a cool haunting feel that says "Ktulu is coming...!", especially those "RAAAWR!" parts.
