“The God That Failed” is one of my top 3 favorite songs from The Black Album (alongside “Through the Never” and “My Friend of Misery”). This is probably the best live version of TGTF that I’ve ever heard. I like the sound/mix of this performance I also liked that Rob used a pick during this song. Shoutout to Kirk, who nailed the solo and didn’t even have to use a wah pedal! James’ vocals sounds pretty good too and he has a nice guitar tone here as well.

Kirk switched guitars during the song. At 1:45 or so, he is playing, judging by the headstock, what looks to be a Gibson Flying V. Then at about 2:28, he is playing a Jackson RRT.

In my opinion, Metallica sounds much better when the bassist plays with a pick, not fingers. The overall sound is much clearer and heavier.

Because it’s the only way you can actually hear it. It cuts better through the mix this way but they should just turn it up so it can always be heard and let Robert decide whether to play with a pick or not in order to get the tone he wants.
