Cliff Burton was the first bassist for Metallica, for albums kill em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets. on their master puppets tour I believe it was in Sweden is where the accident happened and he lost his life. Cliff Burton was a protege of extreme talent probably and arguably to be one of the best bass metal players of all time. Their master of puppets album is heavily influenced by him and contributed to the writing of many of its tracks. Lars and James both moved from their homes to be closer to Cliff Burton as they looked up to him and knew he was essential for the band. It can't be emphasized enough the impact, the direction, and the motivation that Metallica had because of cliff. also he never played with a pick. the master of puppets album was selected to be preserved in the United States Registry and was also part of the data that was stored on one of the Voyager probes ( i think thats what it was called) we sent out into space in search of other life. Regarded as their greatest album by many, their instrumental track "orion" is a great listen. well done guys, i really enjoyed listening to your analysis of their earlier work. and i love that you picked "jump in the fire", one of their underrated tracks, and the "four horseman" is a must listen from their first album. i also recommend: orion, leper messiah, and disposable heroes from the master of puppets album.

i love that you grew up playing guitar and these were your influences and first riffs. because i was the same way. nothing else matters was my introduction to Metallica and what inspired me to play the guitar.....lol... so imagine my horror and disappointment when i went to buy my first cd and the black album was sold out. ( i was 14...so it was 1997, internet was just barely coming out and its not like it is today hahahaha..... any information on metallica at the time was from friends and magazines, and i lived in the middle of nowhere, idaho, so..... yeah....) but i lived almost an hour from the closest music shop and it could be another month before i got the opportunity to get anything... so i picked one of their albums and figured what the hell... also, i had only listened to that one song, over and over, and didnt give any of the other songs a chance at that time. lol, so now imagine only hearing nothing else matters.....then listening to battery.....then master of puppets.... hahaha. i was mortified and pissed off i spent what lil money i possessed, especially at 14 years old, and having very little access to any music with my sights set on this one song, probably their most softest and lightest track.... and get their heaviest and fastest album of all... but when you are at that age and i only had a radio and a portable cd player with a couple cds that had been overplayed to beyond any healthy proportions.... i listened despite my distaste.... its crazy how things like that have the potential of changing your outlook on things... it was probably months later that i got the black album... and it was great and i loved it.... but i liked the master of puppets album better now.

Cool idea! Same I’ve only really heard of some of the names of songs that sound familiar and maybe one or two of their big songs which I think come from after this period, so It was interesting to hear this 80’s stuff from them. It kinda reminded me a little of like AC/DC and that 70’s 80’s kinda rock with some hair metal style thrown in. Some of the Guitar bits even reminded me a little of the Power Rangers theme opening song LOL.

It was interesting on the lengths of the songs, it can be hit or miss subjectively a little bit, some of them had a few little switch ups or sections, could be good with an edit version. Then again you have songs like Bohemian Rhapsody that pulls this kinda thing off. I can also see how later live versions or slight reworkings might give it a different flavour. That Symphonic thing sounds a little bit like Evanescence’s Synthesis album as mentioned earlier, which they did a big tour of.

On a similar note you could do this kinda thing I reckon with something like Kylie Minogue’s first 4 albums (1988-1991) under the PWL label or Madonna’s first 4 which were all in the 80’s over a slightly longer span, having a bit of similar 80’s/early 90’s kinda sounds and production running through them. In Kylie’s case for example She’s also done some updated live versions and stuff like for instance Locomotion still sounding 80’s but I saw a recent TV thing she did where it was backed by the music from 2007’s ‘The One’. Or some of the reworking on the ‘Abbey Road Sessions’ side album (2012) like a slower, jazzier version of ‘I Should Be So Lucky’.

It’s also interesting to see that One was their first music video, 4 albums in in 1988/89, then having that big hit with the 1991 album. Anyway’s I’d give this list about a 6.5 or 7, there were some good bits, but I did find it hard to rank due to the lengths and some of them blending a bit on first few listens (some felt I dunno perhaps a bit more melodically/lyrically focused and to the point than others which went on with the guitar sections and musicality a bit more? IYKWIM), but I’d put it something like this for the moment:
