“Screaming” such a bullshit stereotype!! It’s just only one thing in metal, and not everybody is doing it, and everybody doesn’t do it the same way, style, phrasing!! It’s just a small shit, yes, some sub-genres do it more than the others, but metal is a very wide genre with complex and creative composition and songwriting! You can see metal as the sum of all antitheses! Fast, and slow, heavy, and soft, melodic, and rhythmic, vocal fries, and clean vocals, operatic wide range voices, and gritty vocals!!

Growing up in the 90s I used listen to this song and think yeah you cant tell me what to do and really got the blood flowing. After having my own seeing him grow, there is a whole other side I couldn't see before. To me this is a warning. I never realized what young boys were like till I raised one, and you MUST instill rules and discipline. It must be done but it in a way that builds the structure needed but not the animosity to society at large.

Yep, as soon as he was born (new blood joining the Earth) he was subdued into this way of life we're all stuck in. All of the special things inside of him, he never got to let out for everyone to see, so he never got to be himself as a young prince. When he becomes king, he's so bitter and regretful that he wasted his life trying to conform and fit the mold of others, that he just doesn't care anymore since he didn't get to live his personal truth. I think the "thee" he's referring to is society as a whole, or whatever obstacle is preventing people from being truly free. And because of that oppression, no matter how major or minor, they're forever unforgiven for holding us back. That's how I took it - and waaaaaay back in middle school, our literature teacher broke this down from her perspective (and she was a huge metal fan lol).

Here's what ppl who think metallica is simpler than some of these "harder" metal bands are missing about their complexity and beauty in how they write: Take the 2nd verse, call to the time signature they are on, and the switch-ups therein. Instead of using end-of-the-line rhyming, there's a soft rhyme. "A tired man they see no longer caaares" then it's soft rhymed to a half-step on the next line "The old man then PREPARES to die regretfully, that old man here is me." They matched this to how they flow musically sometimes. There's countless times this happens in all their music but knowing how/when to describe it in a way others may understand, especially through text and not speech, is difficult. That audible "fitting" of how the song flows and peaks and valleys of just "what your ears tell you" is what makes metallica the best, they fit shit together in ways that just sounds awesome, but it's often hard to explain to those who don't just feel it. I saw a moment where I thought I might be able to catch it properly and verbalize it. I guess if you get it, you get it.

This song described the first 40 years of my life and played a huge role in my music list. Took me moving almost 2000 miles away from my family to finally drop some of the rage and hatred I felt towards them. Raised by my psycho grandparents who beat me daily in the name of God, told I wasnt good enough for him so he turned his back on me. Told me my parents would die in prison (which is where they were) and it was my fault. Parents get out and its always my sister that is the favorite, I'd get laughed at to my face if I ever asked for anything, any sort of help at all. Left California a defeated broken man and moved to Kansas to start over. Finally pulling myself off the ground and finding happiness in life. I have learned forgiveness, but sadly not the ability to forget. This and R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion were huge for me growing up. (the grandfather that beat me daily in the name of God happened to be a pastor)

This song really resonated with me in high school. I felt trapped under what my parents wanted, my teachers wanted... The one teacher that made me feel like I had a place was Mr. Graham. I owe Mr Graham so much

Not just his family (the singer grew up in a very abusive environment). Family, teachers, preachers, bosses, cops, politicians, everyone who wanted him to be something he wasn't.

Love the breakdown!! I see it in a lot of different ways. Could be family, could be a job someone got, could be religion, could be a group of friends you made at a young age that he couldn't break free from. I love this song. The music speaks to me, but I am a Hip Hop and Metal head so I grew up with this!

You can literally apply the meaning of the lyrics to just about any aspect of life whether it about culture, religion politics, personal relationships. This is one of my favorite Metallica songs. And one of their better known and loved tracks.
