The melodies of old Metallica would not have existed without Cliff Burton, he was the one to teach Mustaine, Hetfield and Hammett all about those epic melodic passages you hear so often in their 80s material (and even now).

+multiestonian I wouldn't say that Rob is ultimately better than Jason, Jason is massively underrated because probably he is a pick player. Also, Jason wasn't given enough space to demonstrate that in Metallica so if you wanna judge his abilities. Give Flotsam and Jetsam a listen. He did a phenomenal work with them in 86'. To put it short, Rob is a more funky& punk bassist while Jason is a more of a thrashy/Melodic Bassist.
