When I was 14 years old, "Powerslave" came out. That was the album that really made me a huge fan of Iron Maiden. "Somewhere in Time" came out when I was 16 years old. I bought the cassette, took it home, popped it into the stereo, and I was blown away by how frickin' killer it was. It was strikingly different from their previous albums, but the foundation was still solid Iron Maiden. Derek Rigg's cover art really had a "Blade Runner" look to it. Lol I think people like to say it's the best because it's a bit different and non common as the records prior to it. While Caught Somewhere and Wasted Years are extremely correct, for the rest of the record, let's be TRULY realistic, there is no F**king way that Deja-vu, Heaven Can Wait, Alexander the Great and Stranger in a Strange are better than Still Life, Die With Your boots, Where Eagles Dare and To Tame a Land or Back in the Village, Powerslave, The Duelist and Rime, or MoonChild, Only the Die Young, Clairvoyant and lets not forget Prisoner, Gangland, 22 Acacia, Hallowed, Etc etc... And lets not forget the 1st two records, besides the main hits, the records are stacked. I was around when most of the records came out, no F**king way was Somewhere In Time close to be the top record. It was actually kinda of a let down.. The synthesizer guitars was not needed for those songs. Seventh Son is monster classic and the use of synthesizers is amazing.

@@Brian-qg8dg @Brian If we going song by song, it's not all top 10 Maiden material,I would agree with you. But when taken as a whole,yes,I genuinely believe this album is the best one. Powerslave has the instrumental that I am not crazy about and Seventh Son title track goes for way too long for no good reason. Albums before had even more songs I don't particularly care for that much. In fact, since the overall theme of the album is somewhat futuristic, the synths actually add some needed atmospheric qualities, which I think is a good thing. Regardless of what you think about the synths, though, I don't think they're really all that noticeable except for perhaps the opening chords of the title track but, even there, I think it's a good thing.

Somewhere In Time - My favorite Iron Maiden album, and one of my favorite albums ever made. I saw this tour twice in 1986. Hard to pick a favorite song. The Adrian songs were my favorite for a long time (Wasted Years, Sea of Madness, Stranger...) but now I have to say my favorites are the Harris epics Caught Somewhere in Time, and Alexander the Great. No keyboard player on stage in 1986, I think they played the synth sounds with pedals. Then in 1988, they had an actual keyboard player on stage when I saw the 7th Son tour, sort of hidden behind the ice wall, and it "rose up" during prominent keyboard parts. I think Bruce, seeming rather embarrassed, introduced the keyboard player as the sixth man at some point during 7th Son. I don't mind the synth stuff, although it did seem weird at first... I mean, come on, Iron Maiden? Maybe the greatest heavy metal band ever, has a keyboard player on stage? No freakin way man. :) I know they ditched the keys on stage at some point soon after that. And when Adrian left after 7th Son, I fell out of love with them for a time, but rediscovered them in 2000 when Bruce and Adrian rejoined. Saw them again in 2003 headlining with Motorhead and Dio. Man that was a great show.

I saw the Somewhere in Time Tour in April, 1987. The synths they used were guitar synths, not keyboard synths at that time. (Keyboard synths didn't arrive until Seventh Son.) I also saw that tour with Motorhead and Dio, too. (I got the chills when Dio performed "Stargazer.")

I've never even thought about how underrated this album is. For me it's one of the best IM album, and, maybe - the heaviest in the band's whole discography. And its electronic features made it so heavy. That's the same reason why Judas Priest's "Ram It Down", and, partly - "Defenders of the Faith" - sound so heavy - their sound was industrialized by the same way, I think.

Seventh Son is so many people's favorite (old school) Maiden albums but I was always split between Power Slave and Somewhere in Time. I absolutely think they went over the top on the earlier two which enabled them to write an epic Rock Opera like Seventh Son - necessary growing pains of sorts. But I am still to this day split between the first two of that trifecta of Maiden.

One of my favourite albums, along with Seventh son of a seventh son, Piece of Mind and Power Slave. I was 13, back when Somewhere in Time came out and my big brother offered it to me as a present ( vinyl version, of course, since CDs weren't a thing then). My favourite songs on Somewhere in Time are all of them.

Somewhere In Time is the absolute best Maiden album ever made. Everything about it- the art work, how good the band look, the sound and production, the song writing, the performance, the stage show… it was perfection. Stranger in a Strange Land was the first song I ever heard from them and it’s still my favorite. Wasted Years is a classic. And the opening track- Caught Somewhere in Time is so underrated! The solos in that song are the best they’ve done and Alexander get a promotion from “the Great” to “Legendary Perfection!”

I always thought that keyboards were more prominent on "Seventh Son" then on "SIT," which only really uses keys as background texture. I've always thought the whole "No keyboards in heavy metal" thing was absolute rubbish anyways. From the very beginning, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Rainbow, UFO, and Blue Oyster Cult, among other early metal and heavy rock bands, all used them pretty prominently. Even Black Sabbath would experiment with keys by the time they got to "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," with Yes's Rick Wakeman contributing keyboards to the album.

@JimmyMon6663 жыл бұрын
Not to mention how prominent they were with Dio, and it worked well with that band. I guess with IM's case it's just it wasn't part of their history, so they didn't want too big a change. I agree with that. It's not like they used them from the beginning. I felt it worked well with the 6th and 7th albums, however. Wouldn't change a thing.

So, I was ten years old in 1986. My uncle had given me a record player and a few records (Never Mind the Bollocks, Beatles Blue and Red Collections and Best of Roxy Music). I added to this my first ever music purchase - True Blue by Madonna... Then, one day Dad came home from work and said, 'Do you want this? Someone at work gave me it'. It was the Somewhere in Time poster. I'd never even heard Maiden but how could I resist that image? I would stare at it constantly, trying to imagine what the band would sound like. After four weeks of saving the little money I earned doing chores around the house I finally had enough money. The day had come! I hurried down to Woolworth's (the only record shop in my small town) and bought this life-changing album. I can still clearly remember dropping the needle into the groove and hearing Maiden for the first time. It was the beginning of a life-long obsession - and it all began with a poster! Hats off to Derek Riggs! :)

Trying to answer the question “which track is my favorite on the SOMEWHERE IN TIME ALBUM?”, I feel like I’m CAUGHT SOMEWHERE IN TIME, just mulling over WASTED YEARS in a never ending SEA OF MADNESS trying to choose. But HEAVAN CAN WAIT while I decide, it’s tuff trying to make that decision all the songs are incredible. I feel THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER. Trying to pick, I feel like A STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND, the songs are great new and old favorites at the same time, almost like DEJA VU. Then I make my decision and it’s the Commander of the Companion Calvary, my favorite track is ALEXANDER THE GREAT!

Glad you made this video! This is often a question I posed to myself, as the album is imo one of their best. I think the main "issue" was simply timing. A lot came out in '86. Master of Puppets and Reign in Blood redefined metal. Maiden was going in fresh off a ridiculously long tour and the writing/recording process sounded a bit chaotic. They released a really decent album with SIT that held up strongly against their other work. I just feel that, by comparison to what was going on at the time, the early excitement of the NWOBHM sound was done. Great album though. Wasted Years has to be my pick, but buy and listen to the whole album. The album cover itself is a treasure trove of cool trivia and insights too!
